One lure for Winter

Featured Replies

I'd suggest everyone pick up/try out a finesse jig this Winter. I know a lot of you already know about using these, but for those of you who don't they are pretty darn good in the Winter. 1/8-1/4 oz is my preference, tipped with a small craw trailer. This is a phenomenal bait in the Winter! My favorite colors are brown/orange with a green pumpkin trailer. One of my top three baits in the Winter.

does "finesse" refer to the size/weight?  as in under 3/8oz?

I associate "finesse jigs" with the spider skirt, or half skirt with small amount of collar....not sure what really qualifies a jig as finesse

I would not want to be limited to one bait during any season,

but if I were limited to one bait during the winter period, it would have to be "Notemigonus crysoleucas"  :)

Since most of our bass waters are frozen over from mid december to early march, I usually use a tiny ice fishing jig tipped with a perch eye, such as a Custom Jigs and Spins Ratso in the smallest size. I catch a fair amount of largemouth on smallmouth but I mostly target perch and crappie on my jigging rod while I wait for a tip up to go off for pike. When I'm fishing perch and crappie I almost always get a few bass.

It's hard for me to make a trip to lake anytime of the year without casting a jig at least once.

I'll take a jigging spoon as my one winter bait.
