The transition period moving into the spawn is my favorite time to fish LOZ. The big boat wave effect is mitigated by the fact that bass are transitioning to spawning areas, and if you find a good one on a bed it'll likely be in some protected water. If it were me I'd start mid-lake and based on water temp/clarity, run up or down lake from there depending on how you want to fish. Jack Uxa has a wealth of LOZ knowledge and you're going to learn alot. He'll put you on em too no doubt. For bass I'd focus on transition banks with chunk rock leading to gravel flats or south-facing cuts/protected pockets. Carolina rig, swing jig, shaky head, texas rig. Brush hog ready to pitch to any laydown/cover near deeper water. Always good to keep a wacky rig handy too in case things get real warm and the wind dies off. I like to bass fish during the day and then hit rocky banks for crappie in the evenings. If they're starting to spawn they'll come up shallow and get aggressive.

shad spawn and heavy stain made things pretty simple at LOZ, at least on the lower end. quick day trip with the family didn't give me a chance to cover water, but managed 6 in a few hours pitching a 1/2oz spinnerbait to docks and paralleling seawalls. everything had it choked.

I only fish 30mm-Bagnell when I get down, but I'd run up lake with how cold it's been and look for the warmest water you can find. 35-40 WT around mid lake last I heard. Contrary to popular belief that lake, at least the lower end, can be feast or famine January-early March. My buddy was in a tournament down there last weekend... 10 of 30 boats weighed a fish and Sykora only brought in 10lbs on Saturday I think it was. Jerkbait and A-rig is all I'd throw, and don't be afraid to let that jerkbait soak.

lot of ways to fish a texas rig... only one way to fish a jig in the winter... slow. very slow.

Bite was probably good in most lakes around here last night after the cool rain we got. I'm sure the frog bite didn't suck.

Yeah I guess my buddy made it pretty obvious who we were fishing for

fished corporate challenge this past saturday, we were the only boat out of +100 companies to weigh more than one bass. weighed 3 for 9.24 anchored by this smithville giant my buddy caught up front. that lake is tough but it’s got biggins.

Yeah I’d have no motivation to fish it if corporate challenge wasn’t held there every year.

here’s proof that multiple keepers exist in smithville. all it took was 3 to win our company fishoff, most of everybody else went the crappie route thinking it would make for a heavier sack. we’ll be back next weekend for corporate challenge but will need to do better to beat the field.
