  1. This is news? I thought it was common knowledge.
  2. Thanks for all the replies.
  3. Trilene XL fluorescent blue. Just about all I use anymore.
  4. I'm not sure what you are asking, but it sounds like you are asking if you can use higher-test than 12lb on your reels. Are they baitcast or spinning reels? Most likely the answer would be yes. You can use as high as you want as long as it still performs. Try it out and see.
  5. No. They were bought by Shakespeare some time agao, which itself was bought by Jarden Corp. Jarden also owned Pure Fishing, which owns Berkely, Stren, Abu Garcia, among other. Shakespeare and All Star appear to have bene separated and both placed under the control of Pure Fishing. Pure Fishing now owns: Berkely Abu Garcia Fenwick Stren Shakespeare Penn Pflueger All Star xTools Mitchell Johnson Spider 7Strand Since Pure Fising would have had a virtual monopoly on fishing line, it had to sell off Shakespeare's fishing line division to Zebco (though it still has Ugly Braid). That's where things stand as of this moment. Things may change again by noon.
  6. Every company lets one "slip by." And sometimes they get handled pretty roughly by the retailer. I've broken a Fenwick HMG. But I've never busted an All Star. If I had to buy a "tough rod," I'd look at All Star first. My American Classics are tank-tough.
  7. I like BPS rods. I have a Johnny Morris Elite and two Pro Qualifiers. The JME is superb. The PQs are good rods - outstanding for the $59 sale price I got on them. I don't know much about the Clunn rods, but the Extremes are very highly regarded and look very nice. I'd buy one in a minute.
  8. Step back a minute... Roland Martin has forgotten more about fishing than most of us will ever know. The guy has tons of Bassmaster honors and titles. Those don't come easy. He's retired now. And he's doing what all retired Pros do - endorse products. Yeah he endorse some junk. But doesn't he also endorse Triton boats? BPS? GYCB? And a bunch more people on this board swear by? If you guys realy did "not buy" anything he endorses, you'd give up some of your favorite stuff. And as for the crap he endorses - it comes with the territory. Keep in mind that a lot of the crap he endorses is aimed at the beginning angler. That rocket fisherman thing is nothing more than a toy that is intended to SPARK an interest in kids in fishing. If it breaks after ten shots, then your kid asks for a real rod and reel - then it has served it's intended purpose. I happend to like Roland Martin. He has an awesome first name. The only thing I don't like is that stupid "Great American Fisherman" song on his shows. BLECH!
  9. I just don't see a place for the SX anymore. I have two, like them, and won't give them up. But I won't buy another. You can get the S for under $100, and the STX for just a few bucks over the SX is you shop hard enough. I'm still betting Abu is going to lower the price of the STX if Shimano comes out with a new Curado in the $150 range. I'd go with the S, or save a few more buck and buy a new STX off ebay. BTW, the more I use my STX (and SX and SC), the more I think I was wrong about saying the brake was not very effective. I've been using them a lot lately to cast lighter baits and am more and more impressed by the brake.
  10. Apparently whatever he's saved the taxpayers in $$$ he's lost in lawsuits due to prisoner deaths and abuses. Not saying I don't agree with him, but in today's day and age a little critical thinking would do even more good.
  11. Red, send it to Abu. The reel has only been out a little more than a year so most Revos are still under warranty. Abu will more than likely send you a new reel instead of fixing yours. I have had perfect service from Abu, even when I sent in a reel without a receipt. I sent in a Cardinal 500ALB on a Thursday and got a new one on the following Friday (1 week and 1 day). Abu's service is outstanding.
  12. I don't own any Daiwa reels (though I've had some in the past). The current crop of Daiwas are really nice and the Fuego looks and feels terrific. I'm planning on stimulating the economy when I get my rebate check. I hardly ever see anyone mention this reel. I know it's magnesium so it wouldn't get any brackish water use. Otherwise, does anyone have any opinions? How does it handle light baits (1/4 oz)? Also, are Team Daiwa Cielo rods good? Thoughts?
  13. I have several team All Star IM10 rods - a 6'6" MH "worm rod" and a 6'8" MH "spinnerbait rod." I really, really like them. They are very sensitive, adequately light, and super tough. I like my 6'8" best. It's a good all-around rod. I've used it for spinnerbaits, plastics, light to medium jigs, light swimbaits, big cranks, and big jerkbaits. It's not perfect for all these techniques, but it will perform them very adequately. If I had only one baitcast rod, this would be it. I also have five All Star American Classic rods. These are very nearly as light and sensitve, but they feel a lot tougher and mine perform tremendously. Once thing - I would recommend buying a Team All Star off the shelf. Recently I've noticed some flaws that must be manufacturer flaws. I've noticed an guide foot that wasn't wrapped completely, some bent guides, and one guide with an eye completely glued over so the line would not pass through.
  14. No, thanks for your post. Because you've shown me that posts regarding subjects you don't fully appreciate have no place on this board. Next time, I'll only make a post on a broad-interest suject and only refernce sites that are in English. Thanks for bringing me back.
  15. Ok, ok. I must have gotten the wrong impression when I read "they are not smooth by no means. They are a little rough on the retrieve and make a grinding noise" and "I've been disappointed with my Core as well. I'm on the verge of taking it back." :
  16. From Pure Fishing Japan http://purefishing.jp/product/abugarcia/custom/item_03/index.html http://purefishing.jp/product/abugarcia/custom/item_02/index.html http://purefishing.jp/product/abugarcia/custom/item_01/index.html
  17. Spirex = cinder block. Do what Iwantnuts said - Sahara.
  18. They can all have problems. There's a long thread at TackleTour regarding the Core having the same problems as some Revos - roughness and grinding. The Revo is scarcely a year old. And who knows whether or not the problems we hear about are on first-run models, or newer reels.
  19. You are the 3rd person on this board to say a brake on the S comes on by itself. It may represent a problem. But one thing I've noticed is that the force required to snap one OFF is very high. So possibly you aren't pushing it down hard enough? The pawl issue could be what is causing your catching. Did the reel tech say what was wrong with it? I can see how that might cause catching. But I've never heard of a pawl wearing out so quickly. Did something get in the wormshaft?
  20. I'm another hardcore Revo fan and I really like my SXs. I think they are great reels. But I won't buy another either because I like the STX better. I wouldn't be suprised to see the SX dropped from the line, the S price staying the same, and the STX price dropping to $150 to stay competetive with the new Curado. I'm also betting a slower speed cranking Revo will be introduced this fall. Heck, you can already buy slower gears for them. That reminds me, 5bass, how are those slower Revo Ss doing? The one your changed the gears on. And as far as who is harder-core Revo, I'll just say "I was Revo when Revo wasn't cool."
  21. The biggest complaints I've heard about zebra mussels is that they clog things (pipes, pumps, etc), and that they kill native mussles by colonizing on them. Other than that, I really don't know much about them. I have a friend that fishes for smallmouth either on Erie or Ontaria (can't remember which) in New York and he said the water is very clear now and the fishery has changed over the years and smallmouth are now the primary game fish whereas walleye were years ago. Apparently smallmouth populations are increasing as a result of the zebra mussel and goby (?) and there are a lot of BIG bass. I have no idea how true that is. But if it is true, it represents a change neither for the good or worse.
