Please Wear Your PFD/PSD
Here is a story from my local newspaper, a local bass fisherman died in a boating accident, neither of the two were wearing PFDs and now one of them is dead. Guys and Girls I can't stress enough how importatnt it is to wear your PFDs. My son and I had a close call last week, thank god we were wearing our PFDs. By KEITH WALKER Published: August 25, 2008 Police have identified the 49-year-old Dale City man who died in a boating accident Monday morning, said Officer Erika Hernandez, Prince William police spokeswoman. Police were called to the scene at about 11 a.m. and recovered the body William K. Wordham, of 13236 Orkin Lane in Dale City, at about 3:15 p.m. Wordham and and his 15-year-old daughter were boating near Hospital Point on Quantico Creek when the girl, who was operating the 18-foot fishing boat, ran into one of the fenders that surround the pilings of the railroad bridge across the creek, Hernandez said. Wordham was ejected from the boat upon collision. The girl remained in the boat and was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Members of the Prince William County Police Department dive team recovered the body, Hernandez said. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the U.S. Coast Guard and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue along with rescue units from Charles County, Md., assisted in the search, Hernandez said. Wordham and the girl were not wearing flotation devices, Hernandez said. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is conducting the investigation and has not determined how fast the boat was traveling, Hernandez said.

Shorefisher, Were you wearing your PFD? I hope you were. I will give you the same advice I got and it worked for me. Get a friend to go out with you and drag the bottom where the canoe flipped. I tried both stringers and magnets and found my rods. I found mine using the magnet to locate the rods. Once we found them we used another fishing rod with a spinnerbait and snagged the rods. Just remember the magnets will not lock on to the fishing rods, they will lock on to some lures that are attached to the fishing rods. Give it a shot, you might get lucky like I did. If not contact a local scuba diving club and see if you can find someone that will dive for it. This is coming from someone who was in your shoes just days ago. Good Luck, Ron

I hope it is a different weekend than race weekend. That would be one heck of a mess on route 95 if they did. As it is the highway comes to a dead stop just due to the race. If they open that weekend it would take hours (3-4) to get there from Northern VA.

Fishing Again
The beaver dam had some metalic objecton it, I could get close enough to see. Joe, I will let you know when I get some time to fish the lake again with you. Sam, the reels were taken apart and lubricated. I spent a few hours cleaning them up. I am going out of town Thursday morning and returning Friday evening. I am going to the Meadowlands to see the Patriots vs Giants, I got seats in the first row on the 48 yard line on the Patriots side.

Fishing Again
LBH, It is at the end of the original thread. I dragged the bottom of the pond with magnets and locked on to a lure that was tied on to one of the rods. My buddy then ran a spinnerbait dowm to the same location and snagged the line and pulled up the first rod. Once I put the rod in the canoe I noticed the second line wrapped around the end of the first rod that we brought up. I started pulling that line in and I began getting nervous because the line felt like it did not have anything on the end of it. After a few minutes of pulling line up I saw the tip of the second rod and pulled it into the canoe. It turned out the bail arm was up so I had to pull in all the line before the rod came up. Good thing I had a solid knot tied on the spool. I still am out quite a bit of tackle and a $40 hat light but I have no problem writing those off as lost and buying replacements.

Fishing Again
I went out fishing yesterday for the first time since recovering my fishing rods from the bottom of a pond. Man did it feel good to be back on the water fishing again. I caught six chunky little guys all approximately 2lbs give or take an ounce. I caught five on a Stanley spinnerbait and one on the Rage Tail toad. Here is a picture of one of the chunky little guys.
