  1. Anyone fish here? My annual fishing trip with some buddies will be this weekend. This will be my third trip to this lake in as many years. I know it's pressured but I see some big fish still being pulled from it. My friends and I haven't had much luck there yet though. We've caught some nice Northerns and a few bass but the LM have mainly been elusive. What are some of the favorite baits to use there? Any particular spots that are really productive? I'm going to try some night fishing with buzzbaits and chatterbaits this year off the dock at McLears. Any info appreciated.
  2. Yes, to fish the ponds south of burke centre parkway you need to be a resident of Burke Centre.
  3. I don't recall ever having a tick on me. But 2 of my neighbors and my father in law caught lyme disease last year. My father in law was on antibiotics for 3 months. I guess I feel kind of lucky that I haven't had the opportunity to fish much this year. This thread is making me feel better about my decision to buy a boat. lol.
  4. Keep em off you by whatever means possible. Two kids in my neighborhood got Lyme disease last year. Nasty stuff and it takes a long time to cure... sometimes months... the whole time while you feel like crap! Don't risk losing your entire Summer.
  5. No problem. I probably "shouldn't" go anyway.... just sounded too tempting to pass up. Thanks for the offer.
  6. hmmm... I'll talk to the wife tonight. I'm working late though and can't get you a final answer until maybe 10pm? If you find someone before then that's fine.
  7. I might be up for a Wednesday late afternoon-evening outing.
  8. I wasn't sure where to post this thread but here goes... My family is renting a house on the Chesapeake Bay in a couple weeks. I saw pictures of it today. It looks real nice. There is a nice long private dock, a couple kayaks and a couple crab pots. I emailed the owners to ask what I could catch off the dock and they told me croakers and spots mostly. I've never really been salt water fishing and have no idea what type of rig to use. Should I risk my bass fishing gear to the salt? The line might not be strong enough either I'm thinking. I need a picture of a basic saltwater setup. I figure I'll go with live or dead bait to start off with. Any tips would be appreciated.
  9. My wife 3 kids and the cat all holed up in a tiny basement 1/2 bathroom when it got bad at our house. I was at work when it got really dark and the trees outside my window were whipping like crazy... I left my office at one point thinking the windows might implode. Then in a flash the wind was still as can be. There was a tornado touchdown in Falls Church also. I've always been told to get the hell off the water when a thunderstorm approaches.
  10. I'm originally from Rochester but the fishing trip is on Black Lake near the 1000 Islands & Alexandria Bay. I'll be flying in to Rochester on a Wednesday evening... my friend will pick me up at the airport and we'll immediately head for a long drive to the lake.
  11. Why didn't I think of just mailing it? Thanks... that's what I'll probably do. It's only going to be a long weekend, so I might be able to get away with just a carry on.
  12. I'm flying to upstate NY later this month to go on a fishing trip with some buddies up there. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to pack my gear. I'm hoping I can use a soft sided tackle bag as my carry on. If I put all my knives/pliers, etc. in my checked luggage will I be able to do it? Will security get nervous about fish hooks? I need to get one of those bazooka type hard shell rod tubes as well. I can imagine the scene now with me carrying a long black object with "Bazooka" emblazened on the side into the airport!
  13. As long as you have your pfd, it might still be worth the trouble.
  14. "Survey of Fishes of Alabama Lamprey The Lamprey has a long, slender body with a round mouth ringed with teeth. They use their sucking mouth and teeth to grasp hold of the prey. They will then use their rough tongue to rasp a hole through the side of the prey and suck out the blood and soft tissue. When the lamprey is through feeding, it will release the prey and swim away. They prey will usually swim away and die due to lack of blood or from infection. The lamprey lays their eggs in the clear swallow stream. After the eggs hatch the juveniles are washed downstream to large pools and settle to the bottom. They borrow into the sand and feed on microscopic organisms found there. They will remain in the sand for one to seven years, then change into an adult. The adult form of the parasitic lamprey washes down river where they feed on fish. They feed for a year or two, then migrate back up river to lay eggs. The nonparacitic form will not feed as adults and will lay their eggs and die. Six species inhabit the rivers of Alabama. The Ohio lamprey and the Chestnut lamprey are parasitic and are found in the Tennessee River drainage. The Chestnut can also be found in other areas. The other four species, two of which can be found throughout Alabama, are not parasitic. The parasitic forms are generally between 6 to 14 inches and that nonparasitic forms are between 4 to 8 inches. Alabama species Ohio lamprey Ichthyomyzon bdellum Chestnut lamprey Ichthyomyzon castancus Southern Brook lamprey Ichthyomyzon gagei Mountain Brook lamprey Ichthyomyzon greeleyi Least Brook lamprey Ichthyomyzon aepyptera American Brook lamprey Ichthyomyzon appendix"
  15. Sounds like a lamprey. They mostly live around coastal areas but have migrated inland into fresh water with much success. They invaded most if not all of the great lakes in the 50s and 60s.
  16. Limited to one car today which the wife has so I have to walk. Only place in reasonable walking distance is Lake Barton. Maybe I'll see you there... You can park at the gated road on Burke Ctr Pkwy... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=lake+barton+va&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.778911,82.265625&ie=UTF8&ll=38.795721,-77.309761&spn=0.008847,0.020084&z=16&iwloc=addr
  17. I'll probably be headed out somewhere this afternoon when the wife and kids go to a birthday party. Yay! Some free time. Are the lakes really muddy after yesterday's downpour?
  18. I need to invite you guys on a trip to the res one of these days to show me the ropes there. Gotta take my new jon for a spin. Only has a 5hp, so I'm good to go.
  19. Wow, nice fish! I gotta think that some people look at that tactic as "cheating" though right?
  20. Sorry I missed it guys. We hosted a big bbq on Sunday and I was too hungover to get up that early. The good news is that I picked up a nice 14ft. jon boat with a 5hp outboard and fish finder yesterday. No trolling motor though... anyone have a spare for cheap?
  21. I think I'll be a boat owner by Monday, but it won't be ready to sail by then. It's up to my wife if I'll be there or not. Take cruise by the fishing pier, I'll be waving if I'm there.
  22. No way! Andrew, you work at the PTO? I'm in Remsen 1st floor. We should sneak in some night and stock the fountain!
  23. I guess color doesn't matter then. Does lure selection make much of a difference between largemouth and smallmouth at night?
  24. I imagine for night fishing you'd want something with a lot of vibration right? chatterbait, buzzbait, ratltraps? Never really did much night fishing so I'm interested too. I assume fish are locating the baits by sound/vibration am I right?
