Are muskie and pike good eating
I have eaten a lot of pike and they rate right up there with walleye. Flaky white fish without a fishy taste. Lots of people like pike better than walleye. I tried musky one time back in the 70's out of Lake St Clair and it was very fishy tasting, not my thing. Disclaimer: back in the 70's musky were killed to eat & hang on the wall. Today musky are catch & release only by most guys who understand how valuable they are as a sport fish. Smaller pike are plentiful so eat away as long as you understand how to clean them eliminating the Y bones.

Big bass mystery
Mike it sounds like you know the answer to the decline. Too many bass, too many catfish & not enough forage fish (bream). Your small lake almost mirrors many of the ponds that suffer the same problems. You probably need to thin the herd by removing all bass under 15" & getting some of the catfish out. Adding bream fry like gills would help too. Good luck correcting the problems.

Pike winter thoughts
Big pike are not junk but they are rare. I have caught over a 100 pike in a day of fishing in a good location. Musky are more rare yes. But a good day on St Clair can produce 12 to 20 skis for a trolling boat.

Best time to fish Sturgeon Bay vs Wisconsin River?
Welcome to BR. To answer your question smallmouth fishing on the great lakes is best pre spawn during the months of April & May. Smallies are mostly shallow during the pre spawn period gorging before the actual spawn. After wintering they migrate shallower and are easier to locate and catch. After spawning they start to disperse and head deeper which makes locating & catching them more problematic. Your idea to fish the river might be easier than the bay come later June. Good luck out there.

St Croix ScII rods vs SCIII rods
As a long time St Croix user & fan I have always held the line that the Avid rods (SClll) are the base of their quality products. Any lines below that level are offered only as a price competition to the rest of the market.

Why does LC use junk hooks?
I think your observation is a joke. LC hooks are sticky sharp right out of the box. I only replace them as they wear.

Mean Mouth Bass
I always thought that Chris said it was a smallmouth. I never believed it because of the coloration & lateral line. It always appeared to green in coloration. It was a beautiful fish.
