Using Shimano oil on other reels...
No problem. The most important thing is to thoroughly clean all traces of the existing oil before applying fresh oil. Often different brands of lubes are not compatible.

NJ season 2010
Good day down here in Camden County last Friday. Got a 5, a 4 and a big 'ol catfish all on an XCalibur One Knocker lipless crank. I'm happy, as cranks are not my strong suit. Forecast calling for rain this weekend, you know where I'll be.....

What do you do with them after you stick 'em ?

What does your name (Handle) mean?
I spend a good bit of my working life working on diesels in tugs, barges, yachts and pretty much anything else that can't go to a shop. Sometimes I look like a rat at the end of the day.

lightest lure on a baitcaster
You'll have 10X more fun catching those kinds of fish on an ultra lite rig than a casting rig.

ultralight setup
Under $100 gets you a Pflueger Trion 4725GX reel and hook it up with a BPS Micro Lite series rod. I recommend a 6' or longer rod as casting distance will be much greater. The Pflueger Trion is a bulletproof little reel. Research it and read the reviews. Mine is going on it's third season of hard use and it's been flawless (annual cleaning and lube of course) The Micro Lite is a decent rod. It's certainly no St. Croix, but for $45 it's tough to beat.

Country Music
Same here. IF I listen to country, which is rare, I prefer the older stuff. If I want to listen to prefab manufactured crap, I'll turn on American Idol. You can't grow up hanging out at the mall and then sing about drinkin', fightin' and honky tonks. If you have access to Sirius Satellite radio, check out the Outlaw channel or Willie Nelson's channel.

A new phenomenon for 2010...
Our fish here in New Jersey are heavier on account of all of the lead and other heavy metals in our waterways : Any nuts or bolts found in their stomachs ARE NOT an attempt to bolster weight. They're part of their normal diet......

Catfish on cranks ?
I wonder if they actively pursue the bait or is it a case of bonking them and p*ssing them off ?
-
how do you protect cork?
Read the directions on the bottle carefully. One coat is all that's needed, any additional coats will not penetrate. That may be the reason some people feel that "glossy" finish. When applied properly, any slickness goes away after a few outings.

black and blue lures
I find they work better in clearer water. As mentioned, use greens/browns/black in dirty water.

Catfish on cranks ?
Went out today for a few hours. Overcast and breezy, water churned up from rain the night before. I'm throwing an XCalibur lipless crank and got a 5# bass and within a half an hour I nailed a 4# I move down a bit and I get nailed again; stopped my bait cold. I'm thinking "can this be happening ?" I get it up and it's a huge catfish Funny thing is, I caught a cat on a Rattletrap at the same lake several years ago and dismissed it as a fluke. Anyone ever have anything similar happen ?

Pedestal seats in Jon boat
Unless your boat is very wide, a pedestal in a jon boat makes for a very unstable seat. Been there, done that. It changes the center of gravity severely. I ended up taking mine out after one trip. Now it has the cushioned seats with cushioned backrests mounted on swivels. I would love to have a pedestal, just can't do it in my boat.

Shimano Citica E, what can be done to increase performance??
The Rooster; the man in search of the ultimate reel.... You need to have NASA design a reel for you. All kidding aside, I understand your appreciation for quality. That being said, go and get yourself the Citica or a Revo. Parts will be available for years to come and they're all on the same level quality wise. Don't let something like handle knobs keep you from making the jump. I know where you're coming from. I used to own a Toyota pickup truck that I drove for a little over 14 years.....

marital compromise
Talk about dog extremes; we own two dogs. A Boston Terrier, who is deaf and the most obnoxious chiwawa you've ever seen. I lost the rat battle to my wife and daughters. I hang out with Buster. Sometimes I wish I was deaf like him.......

For those who fish ultralight....
BPS's Micro Lite series of rods are a good choice for UL rated rods. They're available in the 6' to 6 1/2" lenghths, which many manufacturers don't offer. Most offer 5' to 5 1/2' in ul, which is fine if you're in close to trees and brush on a small stream. I like the longer casting distance with a longer rod.
