When Color Matters?
Bait color for me is The Last choice I make, when selecting a presentation; especially with soft plastics. The list of decisions I feel I need make correctly in advance of it, is pretty long. But when I finally get to it the "Now, what color do I throw?" - is always considered. Bait Color for me seems to be more of a confidence deal. When I have it, seems I use the net more. When I do not, well, there's just more casting. That may have less to do with the actual color choice and more to do with me. A-Jay

Bail-less
I fished bail-less reels for over 20 years. Full body pendulum casts with a 10-12 ft rod that launched 4 oz bucktails out to ridiculous distances in to the north Atlantic (often at night), were no place for a bail. A simple, no-look index finger move while reeling, would place the line squarely on the roller for retrieval. No bail didn't have any bearing on line twist that I saw. I don't feel the need for this in any of my own sweet water applications now. btw - if one simply hacks the bail off a reel, there is usually a balance problem afterwards. Casting reels were better suited in many applications. A-Jay

Big Game Keeps Breaking
Perhaps understanding what's going on & why can help. A 'Backlash' is a basically a series of 'loops of line' on the spool. Many times these loops extend 'up' off the spool higher than when the line is on the spool without the over run. When there is a 'backlash' or an over run on a reel, and it is not removed completely before the next cast, any and every cast with all the 'loops' poking high off the spool will invariably Damage the line. As successive casts are made, the loops strike the reel frame with quite a bit of force and at a high rate of speed. This will cause friction. Friction is the arch enemy of many things, including fishing line; every type not just mono. Add high speed to it and none of them stand a chance. (We won't get into why I know that ~ ) So while there 's a slight possibility your line is old stock, the more plausible culprit in my mind, and as you've described it here, is the that the back lash is the start of it all. My advice is to back up a few steps, become more proficient with your gear and see how it goes. If not, you may find that changing line brand or type might not make much of a difference. Good Luck A-Jay

Ned Rig Conbo?
While I appreciate the vote of confidence, the vast majority of my own Ned Rig deals are almost always done in calmer situations. Either way that 7'6" Elite AGS spinner quickly became a fan favorite last season. A-Jay

How many bass do you catch in a year? How many bass have you caught in your life?
Nice ~ As the decades on the water started to pile up, sheer numbers began to mean a bit less to me. More recently, it's all about the numbers of days on the water & 'Score-able Bass" that I cherish and remember most. Hope you have fun collecting the data for that spreadsheet. A-Jay

Olympic sized weights ?
That's a bummer ~ Check Dick's Sporting goods - there a few stores near you and they have no contact curbside pick up. Which is free vs shipping - which with weights, is pretty insane. Good Luck A-Jay

Using Scent?
Agreed ~ Additionally, I like the fact that the Megastrike add some "Slickness" to the bait. Stout bass can clinch down with their crushers with quite a bit of pressure and I'm often not using the heaviest gear. So over coming that to get a hook in them can be a challenge. I'll use a tube as an example - had many fish lock up on one, pull me around for a minute and then come to the top and give me my tube back - Hate that. The Megastrike seems to have improved that. Can't say for sure if it's because they are holding it longer or if it's sliding enough to set the hook. Either way, I'm not complaining as much. A-Jay

Using Scent?
I use Megastrike Original & Crayfish scent when target both brown & green bass. I have a ton of confidence in both products. They really work for me - I can not say if I would catch bass without it, because I slather it on everything . . . YMMV A-Jay

COVID-19 Blues
I'm right there with you. We're locked up tight here as well. My Wife's in tough shape recovering from heart surgery last week and that comes on top of a plethora of serious auto-immune diseases. So you know we're not going any where and No Ones coming anywhere near my home - for a while. It's all good though. We should be getting open water in a couple of weeks and 'state officials' are urging us to get some fresh air - I'll be casting. Here's to all of this getting better for everyone sooner rather than later. A-Jay

Working to Stay Lean ~
There's plenty of stimulation waiting for you with what you have. Just need to be motivated & creative. I can kick my own azz quite successfully with just body weight stuff. Throw in a stop watch and minimal rest, and you're on your way to sweat city . . . Especially effective if you've not done it recently. Good Luck. A-Jay
