A-Jay's 2nd Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~
Let's play "Find the Cold Front" Crazy contrast in temperatures at play over a short distance. The good news? The system will pull north and not impact Michigan dramatically. This morning's visual check on local Lake Menderchuck indicated the ice is getting thin and may not be there much longer. Raining today and the day / night seasonal air temps are making my 15 April 2020 projected open water date look more & more likely. A-Jay

Hope to be feeding these to a few Mutant Mexican Green Bass in 193 Days & a Wake Up. Expecting Big Things from them . . . . A-Jay

Scale
I use two ~ An Accu-Cull and the Brecknell. Both work well. I have had the Accu-cull much longer - no problems. I prefer the small Rapala fish grip on both. There's plenty of room to grip big bass lips without any damage done. A-Jay (Brown Bass Not Included)

Treble hooks and night fishing
An organized / neat boat is a must. It will help keep me from tripping & going over the side and stray trebles will inevitably find some skin at night. Both are highly undesirable. I use the same rods & reels at night as I use during the day. I can & do bump up my line size / mono leader a little at night – just because I can. When I first started my night ops, I fished the tried & true night time baits. The Black Baits ~ (Jitterbugs, Buzz baits, Spinnerbaits etc.) and they worked well and I still fish them today. But what I have found is that any bait (and any color) that will catch them during the day, will catch them at night. The caveat to that is, whatever bait you choose, still needs to be presented effectively. But when I learned to present the right jig, at the right place & time at night – I may never fish another bait at night again. I will admit that the spinnerbait is still one of my favorite / effective night baits. A-Jay

Things to do at home...
Had some sun & warmer air temps today so I washed, clayed, polished & wax the Pro-V Bass. Came out really nice. Now if we could just get a little open water . . . A-Jay

BBZ-1 Rat Pack ~
30 lb mono is 3 times the diameter of the AFW I use. Additionally, a big pike and musky will shred it in seconds. Many of the bass you see here were caught using wire. So I do not see a down side. I use it not because of bait loss, but to catch the occassional Giant that often strikes. A-Jay Thank you. I Always change the hooks. However the stock Gamakatus on these are decent. I just prefer ewgs and one size up. ? A-Jay

BBZ-1 Rat Pack ~
I am almost always fishing for brown bass and generally do not fish "Big Baits". So the 20lb. is just about right. I use it for several applications when there's a Pike/muskie factor. These include but are not limited to - topwater (walkers & whopper Ploppers mostly), jerkbaits, Rattle / lipless baits, spinnerbaits & vibrating jigs for sure, and even jigs - especially early & late season when the 'shallower' waters less than 68-70 degrees - the BIGGER toothy U-Boats are usually mixed in with the bass. After 70 degrees here they usually bail to deeper & cooler water. The smaller snot rockets are every where all season long A-Jay

BBZ-1 Rat Pack ~
Right here - good stuff. Been using this one for several seasons now. Uni-knot to the main line and a uni-Knot to the bait or a clip and you're good to go. A-Jay

A-Jay's 2nd Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~
Took my first ride of the spring over to Lake Menderchuck yesterday afternoon. As expected snow is almost gone around the lake but the lake is still iced over. I will be using the expected nice weather coming to put up the snow blower and break out the lawn gear. This will essentially guarantee a big April snow storm very soon. Either way, should still be at least a week or more before open water, but I will be ready when the time comes. A-Jay
