  1. Which Kastking braid is most like regular PowerPro? Thinking of trying some and need to spool up a couple 3500 spinning reels.
  2. How are you running the tip down the groove? I run it forward and it seems to catch and I assume that isn't blunting the tip
  3. Never been impressed with my hook sharpening, but recently needed to touch up a bunch of medium to heavy wire jig hooks and just not getting them very sharp. I have this BearPaw brand stone and am sure it is my technique. This stone is 3-sided with 2 of the sides having a slot and 1 side just flat. I feel better using the flat side. Any suggestions for the right technique or even a totally different product?
  4. I want to hit Sandy soon - bass and heard it’s a good pickerel fishery. Let me know if another kayaker wants to meet up there. Never fished it
  5. Today my 6 AWG marine wire shows up to complete the install of my Motorguide Xi3 kayak motor. I'm powering it with a 12v 100aH Ionic lithium battery (thanks for the recommendations here). I also ordered four of the Anderson SB50 Quick Connect plugs in size 6 AWG. one on a short jumper connected to my battery with ring terminals; one to connect to the battery Anderson connector one to connect to the trolling motor 10AWG wiring one to connect to the trolling motor Anderson I'm thinking I messed up on the one to connect to the trolling motor 10AWG wiring. Should I have ordered a 10AWG Anderson plug for this particular plug? Do all the Anderson SB50 plugs connect to oneanother regardless of the wire they are sized for?
  6. I want to use these older plugs on upcoming striper fishing trips, all of these are probably 25+ years old and hooks are rusty or dull. Where can I buy replacement hooks and any tips to ensure I am getting the right size? Stores near me would only have bass sized treble hooks and these are much bigger.
  7. Looking to pick up value reel with a workhorse reputation like the Daiwa BG spinning reel. Something from $100 to $125 with a strong drag and a value leader for the manufacturer. Gonna see mixed duty for small striper, catfish maybe casting heavy lures for musky.
  8. I don't think my crimpers will work with a 6ga crimp. I do have solder slugs so I guess I will do it that way. You just drop a solder slug into the connector and heat with a torch until the solder melts, then insert wire, right? Been awhile since I've actually done that.
  9. If I'm going to use Anderson connectors I really don't need anyone to make anything, right? Just get the right length of 6AWG and I can install the Anderson connectors? I assume they just attach with an allen wrench or screwdriver? This one place online is quoting me $66 for a custom 10' 6AWG cable with 2 Anderson plugs. Seems high.
  10. The Minn Kota wiring guide for a 55-lb thrust motor recommends 6 AWG (for a 10' run). My hazy recollection is the heavier gauge wire is called out as it assumes 2 or more conductors in a wire bundle, and bundled wire can get hotter. But if you have unbundled wiring then two 8 AWG individual wires is sufficient. I'm trying to size my wire for an 8' to 10' run in a kayak to power a Motorguide Xi3 55-lb thrust motor. Battery is an Ionic 12v 100aH lithium. I might buy custom cables cut to length with my desired connectors installed if someone can recommend a place that does this.
  11. called Ionic support and they said my existing charger is fine even though it registers 14.9v. He said to use the AGM setting. He also said the 4a Ionic charger was fine too just would take longer
  12. I hooked my older traditional deep cycle battery onto my charger and it went to 14.9v during charging. That is higher than the Ionic spec of 14.4-14.6v although not a lot higher. I've read a lot about being careful with lithium charging so might just use the Ionic 4a charger that was offered free with the Ionic battery although that might not charge fast enough for overnight charging. Usually I'm not fishing back to back days so can live with that. Would be nice if I could use my smartcharger if I'm in a hurry but not sure if I should given the output.
  13. I’m getting the Ionic 100aH from Drew. Ionic website says Can be charged with most traditional lead-acid chargers. (Chargers that don’t have “Desulfate” mode. And provided the current levels do not exceed lithium battery charge specification.) Your 12V 100Ah battery can be completely charged with a standard lead-acid charger that achieves 14.4-14.6 volts. Chargers with a voltage of fewer than 13.6 volts will only charge at 50% capacity or less. I’ll check my charge voltage on a std deep cycle I have here
  14. Will my 2/10/30 amp charger work to charge a lithium battery? I read somewhere it could, can’t find that reference now. I would limit charge rate to 10ah. It has a selector for battery type listing Wet, Gel and AGM.
  15. Went back a week later and only caught a catfish
  16. Wanted to check a couple older reels to determine their max drag. Tied em to a scale and pulled. Both registered much lower than I expected despite the drags have been serviced. Maybe this isn't a good way?
  17. After watching some instructional videos I'm questioning if I should target musky. I feel confident I can handle smaller ones provided I bring a bigger net, but as a kayak fisherman I might wind up with more than I can safely handle (either me or the fish) should I catch a bigger one. I saw some pics of lures filling up their mouth and my kayak cockpit seems inadequate for managing that situation and taking care of the fish.
  18. Probably going to add a trolling motor to the bow of my kayak soon so am shopping for a lithium battery. I'll be going with one of the bigger brands and have the following two high on my list. Dakota Lithium 100aH $799 and 11 year warranty Amped Outdoors 100ah $749 and 5 year warranty Both these prices include a charge, although my main focus is on the difference in warranty. Can I realistically expect these batteries to last 11+ years with proper maintenance? Is the 11 year Dakota warranty actually that much better or is it written where it is hard to collect?
  19. @Further North Among other faster action rods I have these 2 casting rods St. Croix Mojo Bass MJC68MHF (not a Fast action if you ask me) An older Bass Pro Tourney Special TSP70MHT (looks like today's Bass Pro Musky rods) Today's 3 to 4' Musky was handled pretty well with my St. Croix Triumph TRS66MF spinning rod. I am inclined to dedicate the Tourney Special TSP70MHT rod as a part time musky rod (I've been using it as a channel cat rod). It was a combo purchase close to 30 years ago and I still have the casting reel that came on it (I posted about it here). The reel still casts great but I just don't know the drag strength (one for sale on eBay says max drag is 22 lb)
  20. Just hooked, caught and lost my first musky while smallie fishing. It was a crazy couple minutes and a beautiful 3.5’ to 4’ fish. Lost it at the net. It hit a 4” grub. Want to pick up a few basic lures - any suggestions?
  21. I have a ton of fishing rods as I fish for a variety of different species, but only a handful of rods I consider my main bass fishing rods. Lately I have been using these two casting rods, with the Dobyn's being my primary rod as I just cast better with it. Dobyn's Fury 703c MH/F St. Croix Mojo MJC68MHF Both are MH/F although the Mojo feels a little stiffer. I fished shallow cranks last weekend and the Dobyn's felt fine. Why is neither rod considered a cranking rod and what does one want in a cranking road that these rods don't have? Maybe they are doing OK because I'm only shallow cranking and not dealing with as much resistance a deeper diving crank would produce? I have several M/F spinning rods I use for lighter plastics.
  22. Mostly the same, just gonna get on the river earlier and spend more time fishing! Also will have a grub on another rod and throw that in some of the deeper holes.
  23. Going back Friday to see if any of their friends are getting hungry too
  24. So I'm supposed to slide that big lead section through the head of my worm/fluke/swimbait when I'm doing a weedless texas rig?
  25. Are these for tubes? What specific plastic are these designed for?
