Occoquan Resevoir Rescue
A quote from the article: "Neither of them required medical treatment and asked not to be identified." ;D Yeah, it would be hard to live that one down. Maybe there is some explanation that makes sense, but, you can't get close to that dam w/o knowing that it is there.

Arlington, VA area fishing
Is that the time we went w/ Jeremy? I couldn't believe they started casting so close to you guys. It didn't do them any good though: bad karma from poaching your spot equalled no fish for them (at least that I saw).

Royal Lake
Depending on where you want to fish there are a few spots around the lake: google maps is your friend. Just be sure to park outside of the "official" parking lots after dark or you will get locked in. That's why we launched from such a difficult spot: there is no gate at Chatsworth and we fished after nightfall. I park on Gainsborough Dr just outside the park entrance when night fishing the main lake point. Another option is Starboard Ct. if you want to fish the western riprap of the dam or the western cove. This lake has been like a thick stew lately due to the rains, so my advice is don't bother until it clears up a bit.

Spear fisherman caught in VA
- Spear fisherman caught in VA
Our local police have had a greater effect on these problems than the game wardens. As far as I can tell, it is because of citizen complaints, much like the situation in the article above. On the same forum I plagarized this article from, another post just came up about a bust/roust of "illegal" fishing in Ashburn. It is a bit different as the lakes/ponds at issue are private (part of a HOA). But, again, to paraphrase the post, the police told him "We've gotten thousands of complaints about illegal fishing/trespassing on these lakes, and its going to stop." Again, the squeaky wheel getting the grease. So, in your best Ray Parker, Jr. voice: "Who you gonna call"? I don't have any answers exactly, but the right numbers should be no more than a google search away. (Or a post from someone in the know). The article above mentions a "Virginia Conservation Police Officer." This sounds ideal. Does anyone know if or why this position is distinct from a game warden?- Spear fisherman caught in VA
This is plagarized from another forum. Similar topics have arisen on this board, regarding the same location(s) as this article. It was good to hear about actual enforcement of our game and fish regulations. On May 23, 2009, Virginia Conservation Police Officer K.G. Bilwin received a report from Richmond dispatch about a group using a spear gun to catch fish and keeping over their limit. The caller stated he observed this group keep everything, including undersized fish and exceed their limit. The complainant stated that this activity happens every weekend, but more so during holiday weekends. Officer Bilwin, Officer Billhimer and Master Officer Martin decided to work the complaint undercover. Officer Martin launched a canoe from a nearby boat ramp and floated down to the other officer's position. Together, officers observed as nearly 25 subjects were fishing from the banks of the river using hand lines. While taking notes of the descriptions of the subjects fishing, Bilwin and Billhimer noticed two males out in the middle of the river acting suspiciously. One of the males had underwater goggles and a snorkel and rarely came above the water and when he did, he did not bring his hands above the water. The other male was acting like a "lookout"; he was not fishing but just kept looking all around while the other male stayed under water. Officer Bilwin then boarded the canoe Officer Martin was utilizing. Billhimer joined them in a kayak and began to develop a plan of action. Officer Billhimer drifted close to the two males in the middle of the river and notified Bilwin and Martin that he saw a string tied to the ankle of the male that was spending most of the time underwater. Officers Bilwin and Martin approached the two males and identified themselves. The males dropped everything they had and stated they were not fishing, but were looking for crawfish. CPOs Bilwin, Martin and Billhimer rounded up all the people they could identify as the ones that were fishing. None of the people that were seen fishing had fishing licenses. Officers Bilwin, Billhimer and Martin began issuing summons for the fishing license violations and confronted the two males suspected of using a spear gun. The two males denied fishing or using a spear gun. Officer Bilwin and Billhimer then swam out to the area where the two males were last seen and tried to locate a spear gun. Underwater goggles were utilized and within 30 minutes a stringer full of fish was located at the bottom of the river. The stringer had one catfish, eight bass and eight bluegill. Four of the bass were within the illegal slot limit. Shortly after locating the stringer a spear gun was found at the bottom of the river. Officer Bilwin then confronted the subjects about the spear gun and fish. One of the males admitted to using the spear gun to shoot the fish. The spear gun, along with the fish, were seized. Overall there were 11 summons and one written warning issued from this undercover operation. For more information contact Captain Kevin Clarke (540) 248-9360. Classic pi****-off snapper posture! Oh, and nice catch.- Netcraft
I've been ordering from them for about a year and have nothing but praise for their service. It's more of a lure-making shop than a full-blown tackle shop like TW, but they do have a reasonable selection of stuff, and at least they did have the cheapest Aruka shads I've seen.- GREAT custom cranks at a crazy price
Jann's sells something similar (2.5 inch, 1/3 oz), called the FS medium diver, for 2.99. You do have to add split rings and hooks.- o-rings
It looks like heat shrink tubing. If it is, it's available at any radio shack.- Might want to check your witholding for 2009
I'd rather owe them a small amount than give them my money interest free for the entire year. I change my with holdings each year to try and get as close to zero as possible. The only witholding you would lose interest on for an entire year would be from the first paycheck in January of that year. That's assuming you took that withholding and invested it immediately in something that would guarantee a return, not a loss. Such investments are typically low yield, especially using last year as an example. This does not even take into account the capital gains tax you would have to pay on any such return. Just food for thought.- Saturday Evening 5/2 pics up
Hey Dan, Love the rod, but I think i should have gone med/heavy. The 3lb'er was pulling like a freight train. It made me wonder if i hooked a 5'er if it would be able to muscle the fish out of the pads. About the cork grip, love it. I have pretty big hands, so its pretty comfortable. Different, but comfortable. ml pauley: yea, love the Shimano. searched and searched for something in that price range that was competitive, and The Symetre 2500 took the win. I use spinning gear for all of my Light to Medium applications. Applications that require MH to H rods, I switch to baitcasters. Just so this is not a complete hijack, nice fish, and nice spot. Some of our local NOVA ponds are sprouting similar vegetation right now. I just scored a new MgAPM70S off ebay for $100 shipped. Its got the same (or a very similar) handle as the one posted here. I've only fished w/ it twice so far. No problems w/ the grip, but, during the retreive I keep my index and middle fingers "above" the reel handle in contact w/ the blank, i.e. where the foregrip would be on a typical spinning rod. So, the cork grip only comes into play on the cast, during which I have no issues with it. Overall, a fantastic rod for light plastics at this price: surprisingly light for 7 footer, very sensitive.- Favorite grubs?
1) Zoom salty Fat Albert 2) Kalin's- Motivation Problem
Hard, physical labor 6 days a week in a brick plant the summer between my freshman and soph. years was all the motivation I needed to take college seriously. These were the types of job opportunities available w/o an education in small-town NE Ohio. That said, I still had a lot of fun in college. As my Aunt sagely said: work hard, play hard.- Great day on Chickahominy Lake.
I've had good luck w/ these Owner hooks also. Not specifically used for space monkeys, but w/ swim senkos, flukes, small paddle tail swimbaits, etc.- boaters world
Ha! We were in there last week, the 20th. That's a shame, I like the guys that work there. Didn't see any going out of business signs or sales, so maybe we just missed it. Come to think of it, we were often the only people in the store, so, it is not that surprising they are going under. Like you said, the tackle selection isn't great, but they do have a reasonable quantity of the usual, i.e. cranks, spinners, plastics, etc.. One could also pick up some boating stuff cheap.- Potomac River
Nice! My three best fish this year have been on these same baits, well, lipless cranks in general, not necessarily rattle traps. Got a 4-15 last weekend on a SK red eye shad. We fished the Potomac about a week and a half ago near the entrance of Little Hunting Creek (from the bank), the only fish was caught on a brush hog.- Fish Turds
X2, but in our case we have turtles. Very hardy relative to most aquarium fish. Anyway, thanx for the tips, I did have the flash off for the second pic of the stinkpot turtle (what a flattering name). I've used macro for other purposes, so I'll try that. And yes, cleaning the glass would also be a plus.- Numbers and size - that's what the Stick Marsh is famous for.
To put your mind at ease, check your scale against a dumbell. Or, a U.S. gallon of water should be ~ 8.35 lbs.- Fish Turds
You take some great aquarium pics Dave. Can you briefly tell me your method? I've tried a bit, but these are the best I've come up with. And apologies for the thread hijacking.- NOVA lakes
Relative to a month ago, the bite is picking up. That said it is still slow. PM sent w/ some specifics.- Anyone free tommorrow in NOVA?
X2. :-X- BBZ-1 Shad
LOL, I just asked AndrewDo124 this question via email. We don't see threadfin shad here in NOVA, so, that thread seemed strange to me.- Va guys post up!
