  1. Like rippin-lips said, the weight of the reel changes the balance point but not by much. NRX 873 w/ Metanium MGL (175g w/ no line), NRX 873 w/ Scorpion 71 (190g + braid)
  2. thats right. lots of risks in life. we roll dice every day. i find the risk of death when driving w/o seatbelt high over the course of 50+ yrs driving in ones lifetime. sorry to derail, just wanted to put a different opinion up. i wish everyone who carried was a responsible gun owner. lets see some more pics.
  3. you usually will not know when you will need a seat belt or gun. its insurance right? if my seat belts were broken id still drive but if i felt the need to carry a gun on the lake i wouldnt fish.
  4. I have the 5 old non Wiebe GLX MBRs and they are great rods. I dont think I will ever sell one. The NRX blank is just a different animal. Feels nothing like the old GLX. The increase in sensitivity and decrease in weight (complete factory rod) is quite noticeable. They really are hard to put down. The downside is that the longer heavy power models are unbalanced.
  5. I tie on the water. the only sure bet is that there will be a jig on at least one rod!

guards are not necessary. you could even lose the skirt and fish paddletails on swimbait jigheads.
  7. with my 4 different spools there seems to be. The Curado E has part numbers for shoes but its for a 300 size. maybe your case was different because it was another size? Mumbly, let us know if the Core spool comes with brake shoes if you don't mind. The shoes have part numbers in the diagram. https://fishshop.shimano.com/vip/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT<>prd_id=845524441848573
  8. Of course! Not trying to fall of the edge. I also keep guns at home. If I felt I needed a helmet when driving, Id choose another road. If I felt I needed to carry while fishing, id choose another body of water. I don't care if a mentally stable and sober fisherman is carrying. I just choose not to.
  9. KVD needs to try KVD line and lure conditioner. I no problems with FC on a 2500 size reel up to 10#. 5# on a 2000 size reel. braid will have 0 coil issues.
  10. what do you not like about the NRX besides the price? The unbalanced heavy power models? I have not fished the new GLX but i hear they are great. lighter and better balanced than the previous model. What do you not like about those? Not trying to battle, just curious. i myself dont like the thick foregrip on the NRX BCs. my finger rests there and its not ideal. id love to see full cork NRX BC with no foregrip (dont change spinning rods, they are perfect). better yet, blanks for sale. -z
  11. This is what i carry on my kayak 1 box - skirted jigs 1 box - squarebills, shallow and med divers 1 box - topwaters, jerkbaits, lipless 1 box - spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, bladed jigs, swim jigs 1 small box - jigheads 1 small box - terminal tackle 3-4 soft "speed/worm" bags - plastics
  12. makes a little sense for the spools that have two different shoe options - but the ones that dont?
  13. The Aldebaran and Met 13 spools did NOT come with brake shoes. These had brake shoes in the parts diagram. The Met MGL and Curado 70 spools did come with brake shoes. These did not have brake shoes in the parts diagram. FYI for those of you ordering Met MGL spools - you need to also order part BNT 5218 which is the small O-ring in the diagram below right next to the spool assembly. http://fish.shimano.com/media/fishing/shimano/sac/images/schematics/Low_Profile_Baitcasting/Current_Models/Metanium_MGL/16METAMGL_OVS_HGL_v1_m56577569831025912.pdf
  14. nope. I leave all mine at home. I also don't wear a helmet when I drive my car. I guess I live on the edge.
  15. 7.x:1 is my default gear ratio. anything slower would only be for cranks or other baits with resistance. 8.x:1 for buzzbaits and lipless mostly and all baits worked with the rod rather than the reel. im right handed and use lefty reels. switched several years ago when I asked myself why I use right handed and couldn't answer. I have better feel and control working the rod in my right hand. my left hand has never had a problem reeling in a fish. its all preference, does not matter what so ever.
  16. exactly what WIGuide said. The ML will be great for DS but it doesnt have the best tip for setting a heavier hook.
  17. fish some 1/4oz arky jigs with 3-4" trailers to build some confidence. The jighead+skirt should not matter too much if you have a quality hook and a head that matches the kind of jig fishing you are doing (pitching, dragging, swimming, grass etc). i use green pumpkin, black and black/blue mostly. small craw trailers i like: yum craw papi 2.75" SK baby rage craw netbait tiny paca craw big bite 3" craw
  18. you can use spinning for everything even before the latest tech. that being said, i prefer BC for most everything except light jigs/plastics. you can pitch just fine with spinning gear. you can even slow down the line with your index finger of the hand not holding the rod. if you dont already, try putting all fingers above the reel seat and "pinching" the blank above the foregrip with your index and thumb. any rod now balances and you could not ask for a better grip for working bottom contact baits and wacky rigged worms. dont buy a BC because you think you might be missing something but buy it when you decide you want to give it a try for fun. especially if you are a smallmouth guy (wish i could be!). you dont have to use BC but you will probably want to once you get comfortable with it if you throw spinnerbaits, bladed jigs, crankbaits, buzzbaits etc 3/8oz and over. IMO that is where BC shines.
  19. i own and have owned these st croix spinning rods. good choice going with st croix. they have a great replacement plan with upgrade option. 6'3" ML/XF Avid - small jerkbaits, pop-x 6'6" ML/F LE - ned rig, small inline spinners, small trebles 6'9" ML/XF Avid - DS, ned rig 6'3" M/XF Avid - shakey jig 6'8" M/XF LE - 1/4oz jigs/t-rig, 5" senko, fat ika as far as st croix ML being like other companies Med, i'd say not so much. the three ML rods above are considerably softer than a loomis medium (2 power).
  20. yep. i dont deep crank but i have no problem crankbait fishing with a 7.x:1 on a newer Shimano reel. Im throwing things I wouldnt have on my older 6.x:1 reels. I actually just bought a 6.2:1 scorpion to see what difference i feel between that and a 8.2:1 scorpion when throwing 10ft divers.
  21. you get more power for deep cranks with a slower retrieve ratio. like the little uphill gear on the mtn bike.
  22. i use black down there. 1/2oz usually. many times just a jighead with a 5" DT hula grub.
  23. bigfruits replied to Glenn's topic in Fishing Tackle
are those ball head spider jigs like Eakins? small craw trailers are my favorite. cant go wrong with a yamamoto 4" DT grub. baby rage craw 2.75" yum craw papi
  24. 5lb sniper FC on rarenium 2000 shimano - DS, shakey jig, ned jig 6, 8lb sniper FC on ci4+ 2500 shimano - small jigs/t-rig, weightless plastics, DS, shakey jig, tubes, grubs 10# Tatsu FC on ci4+ 2500 (got a big spool on sale) - light jigs/trig 30# braid for 1/4oz jigs and t-rigs in stained water on a MH rod.
  25. one other thing i love about fishing is fighting the fish. nothing like a fat smallmouth taking light line off the spool. i understand heavy line and locked drags when ripping fish out of the slop but seeing people water ski fish to the boat in open water does not look like fun. i guess its pros i see do this in videos and on TV and a fish in the boat is $$$.
