Why Do You Fish
Glenn - you pretty much mentioned most of the reasons i fish. everything about it fishing is great. from collecting tackle to playing with different lures on the water on ideal set ups. catching a 6lber on a ML rig. catching the first bass on a bait i made. teaching friends and family to fish. its an excuse to be out there floating around and appearing to be wasting time when really you are making the most of it. when you think about it, recreational catch and release fishing makes no sense. non fishing friend: "do you eat the bass you catch?" me: "no, i throw them back in the water after ripping a hole in their face." non fishing friend: "you throw them back?? why do you fish then?" me: "hhhmmm... good question!"

Metanium 16 MGL or Metanium 15 DC
i got an email answered from them pretty quickly in the past. They are closed until the 7th so you have a pretty good chance of catching them before they ship as i assume they will be flooded with orders when they open after being closed since the 27th. They also have a phone number listed. Maybe you can call when they open on Tuesday or leave them a VM today. Maybe PayPal can alert them somehow? Its free shipping so if it does goes out, hopefully the old address will "return to sender" and only time will be wasted.

I'm the only person in the world who hates Lew's
Not bashing any company (ive never tried a Lews) but ive learned if you buy "cheap" you end up spending more by buying again. Check out Shimano's line of reels. The Curado/Scorpion 70 is a bit more expensive but is a great reel for the price. After I bought my first one, I sold my Curado 51E and two Chronarch 51mgs to replace with more Scorpions. You cant go wrong with Daiwa either, Shimanos are just more ergonomic in my hands.

How to cast a light bait further?
^^ do you have the same problem casting these weights on spinning? is your MH/F actually an XF jig/worm rod? you shouldnt have to turn all of your brakes off. try half on half off are you using too much thumb because of overruns? - tighten tension not using much thumb and cant cast far? - loosen tension practice in the yard. dont waste your time on the water.

NRX 852S, 872S or 902S FOR DROPSHOT?
Sent you a PM. Yes I meant a softer tip. I have not fished the 872 but I have read it is a tiny bit softer but pretty much just a longer version of the 852. The length might make the tip appear softer, i dont know. Its not going to be anywhere near as soft as the 822 - again this is armchair advice. Hopefully someone who has fished both will chime in. Ive done a lot of reading and Ive never heard/read anyone say the 852 or 872 was too soft for DS. prob better for >1/8oz plus plastic but 1/8oz is totally doable with the 852 and i have no problem casting it. I do sometimes pick up my ML St. Croix LE for light dropshot. As much as I hate retying, since i bought my 852 these Loomis 2 power and St. Croix Med Light rods have not seen much use: 852s GLX (too stiff for DS) 802s NRX (too similar to NRX 852, prefer the 85" for DS) 6'6" ML/F LE (still use sometimes for light DS) 6'3" ML/XF Avid 6'9" ML/XF Avid (old DS rod) You might want to give your 822 another chance if you havent used it much. You shouldnt have to set the hook hard at all. But buy the 872 anyway Hope this helps -Z

ordering spools from shimano
yeah, im pretty sure you and Zimbobass are right. just looked at the Curado E and the shoes also have their own part number for that reel. https://fishshop.shimano.com/vip/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT<>prd_id=845524441852769 i didnt want to take the chance of having to wait for the shoes to get mailed separately. it came out to about 7 bucks for 6 shoes for the Met13 and 4 for the Aldebaran. If i wasnt so impatient and ordered today, i would have skipped the shoes. Now my only worry is that the 2 Curado 70 spools I ordered wont fit my Scorpions! Ive been told they will though. What i thought was interesting is that the Aldebaran spool is more than twice the price of the Met13 spool and $45 more than the MetMGL spool.

Who would you fish with for a day?
the "on da river" guys.

NRX 852S, 872S or 902S FOR DROPSHOT?
I use the 852s for DS and I think its great. Many that DS often have said that the 852s tip is not ideal and that the 822 is better for DSing but because you are thinking the tip is too soft on the 822 I think the 852s will probably be a good fit. I understand that the 872s is very similar in action and power so I would probably look into that rod for the extra length. Ive also read that it has a bit more tip than the 852s so that should make it a bit more attractive for DS. Pm me if you are interested in reading comparisons between the rods. The 852s is my favorite spinning rod, I also use it for weightless plastics and small jigs/t-rig.

ordering spools from shimano
yep but that could also mean the spool plus brakes (not shoes). another thing the reps and i discussed. thanks, J Francho. I had a feeling they did. glad i didn't order them for all five spools!

Is there such a thing as a (baitcasting) reel too fast?
my general rule is 8.x:1 (or higher) for all baits that are moved with the rod rather than the reel. i also prefer this high speed for lipless and buzzbaits and any moving bait with low resistance. i do not find it hard to slow down when needed. i think 7.x:1 is a good all around speed to cover everything except deep cranks.

ordering spools from shimano
just to clarify in case someone is confused, the spools come with brakes. we are trying to figure out if they come with the brake shoes. i ended up ordering the spools and ordered extra brake shoes for the Aldebaran and MET13. The other spools i ordered did not have separate part numbers for the brake shoes. I will post back here when i rcv the spools to let you know if they indeed came with the shoes. Both reps i spoke with came to the conclusion that they probably did not have the shoes, I think they do. Worse case scenario - i wasted 10 bucks.

ordering spools from shimano
I just noticed that some of the diagrams show separate part numbers for the shoes and some don't. The ones that have separate part numbers for shoes are the Met13 and Aldebaran. Has anyone ordered spools for those?

ordering spools from shimano
Hello, I spoke with two different people at Shimano USA and they werent sure if the spool assembly comes with brake shoes. I'd go ahead and just buy the brake shoes just in case but I want to order 5 spools and that could be a lot of shoes i dont need. When you ordered your spool did you have to also order the brake shoes? Thanks! -Z

NRX 854C
for some reason the NRX 854 is not a popular model and some say it does not feel as lively as the others. the 873 is a great 1/2oz jig rod (it is not a MH rod as it is labeled) and the 852s is my favorite spinning rod by far out of 15 or so I own. id buy them both again if I had to. I have heard nothing but good things about the 893, many claim it is the best small jig rod available. everyone would have a 4 rod quiver. no fun!

Dragonfly on Kayak - shoot through hull?
Hello, I'd like to avoid using a waterwell and a scupper install will not work well on my kayak. Has anyone installed a Raymarine Dragonfly transducer shooting through the hull of a kayak? Would you say the image is perfect? I was thinking of slapping it on some marine goop after removing the bubbles. How did you mount it? Thanks! -Z

Frog Rod setup???
I have not used the XX Perfect Pitch but I have heard its an excellent frog rod by several people. If I end up buying it I will probably use it for heavy jigs and punching as well.

Megabass PV Broke In 2 Pieces
DVT - i agree 100%. i have shipped an rcvd about 40 rods total (im sure that dwarfs your numbers) and have had a few close calls. the cardboard tubes that USPS taped up when broken looked like a 7 second job. Although packaging is more important than carrier, have you noticed more lack of care when handling when comparing USPS, FedEx, UPS etc?

Small framed baitcasters
get the curado 70. better yet, get the scorpion from digitaka. i have smaller hands and i think the curado/scorpion palms better than the smaller aldebaran 50. i think its because of the way my fingers rest on the bottom of the "gear box". the scorpion 71 is about the same size as the curado 51e but the 71 palms better in my hands. palms way better than the chronarch 51mg. when palming, my index finger rests on the foregrip. i like a rod with a thin foregrip. putting my finger on the ugly plastic theads of an old loomis mbr or bcr rod is super comfortable to me. btw - what they say about small hands is not true. my feet are medium sized.

What are the biggest problems you face while fishing?
ok lets start a donation to get these kids some headsets. i got $20 on it. OP - write a false report on cotton mouth sightings in the reservoir. that can be your school paper. quanjig - whats the prob with kayakers? would rather come across a kayak than a bass boat whether im in a kayak or a bass boat. the kayakers with situational awareness and common courtesy will launch on the side of the ramp to allow trailers to pull down. is that the issue? those types of humans are rare? edit: the donation thing was meant as a joke but now that im thinking about it, im sure a lot of people would donate. im way to lazy too start this, who do i email?

Nrx 854 for jigs
not so sure it fishes like a 4.5 power loomis if comparing to my old MBR 844. It is def a 4 power but from what i have read the 894 is a bit more powerful. I also like my 873 for football heads. it seems to have a stiffer tip than some other jig rods i have and have tried and i like that for jigs. for those that have fished the 893, 873 and 894 - would you say the 873 falls in the middle power wise? i have read many describe the 893 as the best light jig rod with 3/8oz + plastic being the upper end in weight. Man, if Shimano sold NRX blanks id prob have 8 jig rods. im getting excited. no more coffee.

Megabass PV Broke In 2 Pieces
megabass USA has a 3 yr warranty and i believe the 1st year is free replacement for original owner. if the seller was the original owner and it was purchased in the USA, the seller should be able to get it replaced and might refund you in full after he reads about it assuming he doesnt know. Tell him to use that $50 insurance to pay for your shipping it back to him. He would then have a brand new PV to sell. USPS is probably the worst way to ship a rod in my experience.
