I wouldn't let the addition of an extra guide be the negating factor in a rod purchase. Depending on the rating of the rod it may be required, again it may not. Either way your right, a single guide isn't gonna kill the performance of the stick.

Now that the braking has changed, I'm gonna give the new STX another go. The old STX was all suck....

My goal when building a rod is to use the least amount and the smallest sized guide I can get away with. The less weight I have to add to the blank, the more light and sensitive the end product has the potential to be. The area from the top of the real seat, to the tip of the blank offers the most obvious increase in performance, pertaining to weight savings. The primary job of the rods guides, is to keep the line off the blank while under load. Load translates to casting, fighting fish, possible lure actions, etc... A great deal of this function relies on proper guide placement on the body of the rod blank. So in my opinion, less guides can potentially be a good thing, but not if using less guides creates problems with the performance of the rod. Line touching under load, line slap while casting, etc...

I'll be there with several others. Only point of suckage is the 6:30 dinners, I'm not sure we'll ever be off the water by that time. Will have to try to catch up after everyone eats!

Win 7 is fine. It's actually where you want to be in terms of the Windows line of operating systems. Vista sucked, XP would probably still be my choice, but the folks in redmond will force us to march on via support issues and Windows 7 isn't a bad place to be.

No, this is just a single example, and wasn't meant as a bash, just as an example of the current "state" of each. Examples such as this are plentiful, this isn't an exception to the rule. As I've stated, I would assume each will get better with scheduled software updates.

leekage issues have been widely acknowleged as resolved. The CS issues can be noted as horrid on both sides of the house, so pick your poison. I'm sure the bird's are great units, but lets not dip into denial. The current Lowrance offerings are fresh, while the bird imaging has a bit of age. When/if hb decides to brush things up, I"m sure image quality will be equal.

I think that should work fine, I've used the exact same tip. You can take an exacto knife and carefully wiggle it slowly up the tube body and the body will easily split open. I'd suggest holding the tip with something, I normally use a set of taped up electrical pliers so I don't scratch/damage anything. I take a dremel tool and smooth any burrs along the split. After fitting the tip, I typically apply a very small amount of epoxy. You can wrap it if it you wish, but if the split/fit is very close you can paint it. If done properly, you won't be able to tell the tip was ever split.

that is exactly what my dilema is , for micro guide tops , the biggest tip top is a size 7.5 and the blank i'm gonna have made has a size 8 tip i have heard of builders splitting the tube and with good wrapping , it will work out ok and be neat . i am gonna have all black thread wraps on the guides so i hope it can come out nice and still be strong ... can anyone post a pic or two of a split tip top and what it looks like wrapped , if that is not too much to ask ;D thanks ... Sorry about not replying back, I missed your post. I don't have a pic readily available, but if you head over to rodbuilding.org you should be able to find one with little problem. There are several guys who split micro tops for the exact purposes your describing. I personally don't go any smaller/larger than 4mm/5mm on my tips.

I've used the previous generation Lowrance units, pretty harshly and I couldn't have been happier (27/28, lms 520c). I've now equipped my boat with the new HDS units. After much comparison and debate, I simply think the Lowrance units offer a better image and a more functional user interface than the comparable HB units do, just my opinion of course. I also recall most of the leaks were found on the HDS 7 units, and have since been corrected. This really doesn't surprise or bother me, as most new product runs will have some initial problems to work through. What does bug me, is the increasing cost of these units. On one hand, the technology is simple amazing, so I"m sure there are tons of R&D to recover. On the other hand I'm not convinced, Navico isn't marking these things up like mad.

Most rod blanks here are rated for Lure weight as well. I'm probably wrong, but I can't recall seeing one of the mass produced rods that list solely a recommended line spec, negating a recommended lure rating.

I've done what David suggested and it works great. I've also used micro tops and split the tube bodies, but that gets a bit more complicated to do "neatly".
