  1. Sorry your thread got hijacked. I almost went the MST school, had a friend who did, he retired the right way, and well the Old Man made an Old Man of me, lol. I was medically Retired in 94 after 7 years. For those who think we were brave or nuts, we were told quite routinely, "you have to go out, coming back is an option". When someone called in with a SOS or Mayday, you just thought about them, it was not heroic or courageous.
  2. Shoot fellas I'm older than that, the new 47's were coming on line when I got out. The one in my Avatar is the "Old Man" the 44footer. The 47 had the capability of being ran from the inside, not the 44. We were belted in and trust me it isn't for the faint of heart, but it can be alot of fun. Both myself and A-Jay ran the 44's. This was the reason for the snide remark Bosn's rule, we were and I guess still the one who operate the MLB, stands for Motor Life Boat, the old 44 was all steel and very slow, the new 47 all aluminum and pretty fast considering the mission. I truly loved my time in the Coast Guard, running those boats, its a thrill, hard on your body at times but wow!!! I miss it!!!!!
  3. Good luck,
  4. With all the questions we get I wanted a thread to discuss in general terms where to put the money. For bottom presentations and verticle presentations I spend more on the rod, than on a rod that I use for reaction baits. My reels are all in the 100-200 range, I've never paid more than 159 and that was for my Curado E NIB, my rods are the same. When I started out I was dumb as a fence post when it came to stuff like this, and a little advice in the right direction was always helpful. Think I posted somewhere on here, pretty simple, quality reels will cost more than the rod generally. If you are on a budget use your best reel for reaction fishing where the reel is doing all the work, your best rod on techniques that need sensitivity.
  5. We both know Bosn's Rule, lol Not hijacking the thread, depends on how much you like to hunt v/s fish, KY has a lot of public land, great fishing ,etc. South Florida has monster bass, saltwater, and all the invasive species, peacocks, etc. Maine??? if you like smallies and hunting there ya go!!! The grouse hunting there is phenomenal, you also have the chance to be picked for a moose tag, deer hunting is good, bear hunting great. The fishing on the coast is great, stripers, last time I was there you could get lobster at the doc for like 5 bucks. If I was young and in good shape I'd pack my bags, lol. Then again in Oregon you have Elk, muleys, and whitetails, but you will drive more. Tough choices, hope you have a good detailer, but remember the longer you wait the fewer choices you have.
  6. Will do....
  7. The baitshop that I like that is a mom and pop shop is called Tackle 1, stopped in one day looking for rage tail products. The guy was really nice said I was the third or fourth one that day, long story short he let me help pick out what to order!!! We sat down went over the baits and colors, it was a lot of fun, stopped in a week later and bought some stuff.
  8. Never stationed in Miami but pulled into port there a few times, never left the base. Anywhere the street signs are in Spanish first I stay away from.
  9. One church I belonged to had set up accounts at the local gas station and grocery store, I would conservatively estimate that out of every ten people who asked for help only 1 or 2 would actually go to the store and get the items they "needed" or to the gas station for fuel.
  10. Jig and pig is an antiquated term that originally described a jig with a pork trailer, hence jig and pig. Now it is used to describe a jig with a soft plastic trailer generally, although "uncle Josh" still makes the pork trailers.
  11. Idk you asked northern VA. Get a map or Google, find the neatest river or creek and post a question about it.
  12. I think someone who fishes that river may be able to answer better. I know the rivers I used to fish after rain you did best near creeks. Minerals, fertilizers etc all run into rivers after a good rain depending on location its either a blessing or a curse.
  13. What kind of line? From info given thus far I'm guessing fc or a copolymer or hybrid. Wrap it up in pads or weeds and a kink forms, retie. Those lines have a crystalline construction, a kink is a cut. That's the reason so many ppl have knot problems with that line IMO
  14. I'm not a cold hearted guy but the typical panhandler drives me nuts. Today stopped in the parking lot of a CVS, this guy gives me a sob story how he needs to get to Charleston could I help. Something about this guy seemed genuine, asked him how much he needed probably 40 bucks he says. He was a little eager now, I tell him to hop in the truck, I don't carry cash but if he needs to get home to his family I would buy his ticket. He walked away mad!! He would have had a better chance just telling me the truth. I don't know why but it just aggregates me.
  15. No implication that you were intended, just a friendly reminder for noobs
  16. Its an hour to Clark's Hill, Murray and about 2 to Santee. There are a couple ponds and stuff closer that I fish more just because they are close. Planning a trip to Erie next fall, that's gonna be more like 10
  17. Shenendoah River, curly tail grub 4"1/8 ounce jig head. Smoke with purple flake, you'll catch several
  18. Pinnacle has some nice high end stuff. They carry a stigma because they entered they market with their low end products. They have been in business for years making reels for other companies
  19. I remember one manufacturer advertising a low ratio as the perfect worm reel. I like them for worms and jigs when I can't seem to force myself into slowing down. Then invariably some smart arse fish picks it up and runs toward me.
  20. I've seen news reports where there are a couple of robotic companies trying to perfect a small version for ppl with spinal cord injuries so they can walk again. The difference obviously is that instead of wheels as the main propulsion the legs actually work. The Asimo project, which is Honda's robot, took 20 years to perfect the walking, that robot can walk up and down stairs, uneven terrain, etc.
  21. Put a tip jar out if you don't have one already. If there is a tip jar I typically throw a buck or two in. I pick up a lot as the pizzaria is only two blocks from the house and pay with a debit card often when I get the receipt for signature the tip area is already filled in at 0, don't know if it's policy or what, no tip jar either. But the local Five Guys burgers, best burgers in town btw, has a tip jar which I use. On a different note and maybe an idea for some enterprising individual, there is a local guy that will deliver your food from anywhere!. Call him, he is in the yellow pages with the pizza joints, I can't remember off hand how it works, don't know if you prepay the restaurant with a card and then tip him when he delivers or what. But he will deliver anywhere and anything, I used his services once as at that time we were not in the delivery area, he brought it out and of course he was tipped generously from our short conversation at the door he is very busy and typically doesn't get stiffed.
  22. U guys must not remember the Shimano posse, back when Shimano had the place pinnacle now does on the boards, well lets just say the gambler is mild. Except in those days there were about 12 members of the posse and every reel thread was hijacked for a while.
  23. Lol, I shouldn't complain. How bout Catching the hawgs
