  1. Yeah but those places around Boston are used to it. We got used to it in a hurry when we lived in Holliston. By the time the worst of winter was over the snow that got shoveled from the driveway was over six feet high.
  2. We got totally prepared for anything the "blizzard" could throw at us. I hooked up the plow Thursday morning. I hooked up the generator in the garage for the inevitable loss of power. We ran the dishwasher. My wife got all the laundry done. We had food for days. We got two big buckets of ice melt at BJ's Wholesale Club. Then we relaxed and saved our energy for every crisis which Hercules would throw at us, snow, wind, cold, you name it. Well, we got the snow, the wind, and the cold. We did not lose electricity. No trees were toppled. I spent about 45 minutes scraping the snow from our driveway. That was it. Preparation, it's like insurance, most of the time you don't use it. Still, there is always a modicum of security from both preparation and insurance. You're always better off to have it, and not need to use it. Hercules? Should have been named Pansy.
  3. It's easy to see with numbers. A store has a half price sale. A ten dollar item sells for five dollars. You get to the store and see a sign, take another fifty percent off at the register. You don't get it free because of the two fifty percent discounts. You get half of the five dollars off, and pay 2.50 for it, netting you a 75% discount from the original price. Math was my best subject in school. It just came easy to me. In fact my 9th grade algebra teacher gave me an A-3 on my report card. The A was my grade, and the number represented the effort you put into that class, 1 being the highest and 3 being the lowest. I asked her how she could give me a 3 when I got an A in the subject. She told me it was because I didn't try hard. She could not explain what more I could have done.
  4. When I was 11 or 12 years old I worked for a chicken farmer, grading eggs shoveling out the chicken coops into the manure spreader, and then getting to drive the tractor spreading all the chit I had just shoveled. I also cut, raked and sometime even baled the hay. Hay might not go with chickens, but he also had a flock of sheep, and some goats. At that time, I'd have done it just to drive the tractor. He told me, and every other kid that ever worked for him, "You're so bright, your mother calls you sonny." If you had a penny for every time you've heard that .............................
  5. Actually my savings with a 20% discount, and using my 10% off card saves me precisely 28% not 30%. The math works like this. With a 20% discount I'll be paying 80% of regular retail. I then get 10% savings on that 80% which equals 8% of the retail cost for a total savings of 28%. If you want to do it the other way, taking the 10% savings first, I'll get a 20% discount on the remaining 90% which equals 18%. 10% plus 18% equals 28%.
  6. You're so bright everyone calls you sunny.
  7. Not really, because I'd get the 20% off without the gift card. It doesn't take a discount for me to buy their products. If I need something, I'll get it whether it's a sale or regular price. Here's the thing as far as I'm concerned. I have a list of items I need/want for the road trip. It includes baits, hooks, and other gear. I'm reasonably sure they'll have a sale before the road trip, so I'll wait until they have a sale. Maybe next month for President's Day. I'll still get the list of items I want for the Road Trip whether they have a sale or not. I'll wait until the middle of April. I've done it before, and it works for me.
  8. Looks like a string of pearls.
  9. I don't remember the buckshot worm. We used mostly black worms, occasionally the natural color. Looking at the ad, it looks like the "actionizer" head could be a forerunner to the scrounger jig heads.
  10. You left out Burke worms. I'd get them not rigged.
  11. It's really quite simple. For 270 dollars, I get 300 dollars worth of merchandise. Whether or not they "care" is totally immaterial. 300 - 270 = 30 dollars in savings.
  12. It was after Christmas, but close enough. I turned 270 dollars into 300 dollars in a matter of a few minutes. Tackle Warehouse had a ten percent discount on gift cards. I sprung for the 270 dollars to get a 300 dollar gift card. I have a shopping list in preparation for the Road Trip to Wilson Lake. I'm pretty certain that TW will have one of their 20% off sales between now and then. When they do, I'll spend that gift card in the blink of an eye.
  13. Thank you. I enjoy woodworking and carpentry work around the house. Just so it's not enough to become tedious.
  14. Not a problem for me. Winter is the time I get stuff done around the house. This year, I'm replacing all the carpeting in the upstairs bedrooms with pre-finished hardwood flooring. Should have it done before we head to Daytona Beach for speedweeks. I get to fish whenever I want during the warmer months as a trade off. Another upside is that the fuel bills for my truck are about a hundred dollars per week less, which also pleases my wife. It takes me four or five days per room because I like a perimeter pattern in hardwood flooring. I also change the patterns slightly by using different color woods. It takes more time and care, but my labor is free, and we enjoy the finished product. The dining room picture below which I also did was done in the 1970s with the photo taken about thirty years later. It was not a prefinished floor. I rented a floor sander to even out the strips. Then smoothed it with an oscillating sander to get rid of the sanding grooves.

  16. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Different truck today, same plow.
  17. Thank you Glenn, the mods, and all the other members. It's great for all of us. Happy New Year to all.
  18. I could finally get on today, the beginning of a new month. It had me in Providence, Boston, Worcester area. I'm a half hour east of Providence, an hour south of Boston, and a little over an hour southeast of Worcester. They could not have been closer. Those are the major cities in the southeast MA area.
  19. Raider would have been a lot taller if they hadn't turned under so much to make his feet.
  20. The food may not be edible, but I'd pay to see you cough over an open flame.
  21. We'll have to compare when we get to Wilson.
  22. When it comes to "standards", at the pinnacle of all goals, objectives, etc., is to have fun. Just behind is the goal of continuing the learning process. Another goal is to fish new waters, and different areas of the country. It's about doing the best I can with the gear I have, and my own abilities. There is a saying that it is better to fall short of a high goal than to reach a low goal. There is another saying about setting yourself up for failure. Fishing is unpredictable. There are days the fish would fight each other to get to a clothespin with a treble hook. Other days they are just turned off. Maybe it's because of my days as a commercial lobsterman. The days and weeks of preparation getting the gear in order to set. Prior to setting it's going over the past years' Loran logs to make an educated guess of where to set the gear. It's getting out to haul gear on every day possible, and staying out there to finish hauling the gear when the weather turns nearly impossible. It's the monotonous grind of making major moves during the course of the season, and the drudgery of loading gear and bringing it back to the dock at the end of the season. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't always fun. There is nothing at stake in recreational fishing other than the demands you put on yourself. I try to keep those to a minimum.
  23. Do you have a power, or accessory switch on your switch panel? There is one on my Nitro. It provides power for the electronics. It may also provide power to the lights, but I'm not sure. The trolling motor has its own separate, dedicated circuit, hooked directly to the batteries, which provide power for only the trolling motor. If you have a switch like that there may also be a buss bar for wiring in accessories. You can hook up to that, though you may have to put a fusible link in your wiring. There may also be a fuse panel in the "Power" circuit. You'll need to check underneath your console using a flashlight. It may have some "vacant" fuse sockets. If it does, you can wire directly to an unused circuit, and install the proper size fuse for your application.
  24. Anyone have any info on tackle shops in the area?
  25. Outstanding! The Crispy Cremes are on Dinky. I'll supply the Klondike bars.
