  1. I know of a place similar that I have fished. One side of the canal is freshwater with an overflow spillway into brackish tidal waters. Haven't done all that well on the fresh side as I fish the brackish much more, caught some nice bass but more salt species. The brackish side has to be fished in accordance with high and low tide as well as incoming and outgoing.
  2. From experience I would not send a reel to an authorized repair center for any brand. I took a reel to a top notch tackle store, an authorized repair center, no different than any other place as they don't stock the parts like the parent company. A company like Shimano has their parts department separate from service in this respect, the part may be out of stock for purchase but they have the part to repair the reel. This happen to me with a line roller bearing on a stradic fi. I did have to pay to ship it there but in fairness to Shimano fixed they reel for free after warranty and paid the shipping back.
  3. You're cruel, lol.
  4. El Golfo de Santa Clara, Sonora Mexico. 90 miles south of Yuma Az on Highway 3, I'll let you look it up.
  5. I 100% agree. IMO the misconception is finesse vs power, in my world of fishing those 2 words don't exist. The rod and reel is merely a tool to deliver the lure to a designated spot, whatever you're more accurate with that's the tool for you. When people talk finesse they generally refer to a fairly light rod and reel set up, quite true it would more difficult to pull fish out of heavier cover. I do believe the rod is what pulls fish out of cover and not the reel. I could use a mh spinning rod lock the drag like many b/c users do and pull bass out of cover the same way. I can take that same mh spinning rod use 1/4 oz lure in some situations or a 2 oz lure and catch some really hefty fish, am I finesse or power fishing? I'm doing neither, I'm delivering my lure where I want it to go. If there is a significant difference it may be in the line being using for each. The b/c will handle heavier mono lines, for me using braid and spinning I'm not losing any strength but I am gaining line capacity. It really boils down to no advantage either way, just preference.
  6. All goes well I'll be fishing El Golfo and Puerta Penasco in Mexico next week.
  7. I'm heading to 110 degree weather this week.
  8. I don't know if backing off the drag is all that important but I do it any way. I back off my drags when driving from one fishing location to another. Doing a lot of urban fishing I just may get side tracked and do something other than fishing, takes but a second or 2 to reset.
  9. Like anyone else I like a nice deal but only for NIB. I no longer have the patience nor desire to bid, I've done it many times before. I have an adequate amount of gear, there is nothing I need or want that bad, if the buy it now price is to my liking that's the button I click.
  10. The complaint was the landing area as a part 4 with the tee up. The green is designed to be played as a part 5,par 4 greens usally have a different size and shape
  11. I agree with DVT regarding setting the drag with braid, much of it has to with the size of your target. Using 20# braid with the diameter of 6# mono divided by 3 the drag should about 2#. If targeting say juvie tarpon or similar fish 20-40#, 2# of drag won't get the job done. Braid does give you that latitude to increase.
  12. Most of my better fish are caught when I don't have another person around to snap the shot. When I get the opportunity sure I take advantage. Every single fishing site, bass or otherwise I've been on, the practice of embellishment overwhelms the "honest" photos. Last week I saw a fish caught, then weighed and measured, I know exactly what it is. This is not a bass but for heck of try and guess length and weight.
  13. No point in selling a reel that you like, an addition is something else. For a small reel used primarily for panfish either brand is fine, there is no appreciable gain in performance or durability. A prez is about 60 bucks and sahara about 80 I think, how could 2 presidents be bought from the sale of 1 used sahara.
  14. I do think there is something to it. I've never had a wind knot on any of my Shimanos, although overall my opinion is only fair. I had a Johnny Morris wide spool, nearly every cast produced a wind knot, exchanged it for a Daiwa tierra and have yet to have a wind knot. I get the occasion wind knot on my Abu sorons, but not that often to be concerned. In fresh water it's all Pflueger and I've had many wind knots on each of them with every brand of braid, but one. I'm using 10# US braid for about 6 months on a reel, no knots and no twist and I use inline spinners with swivel. I spooled 2 saltwater reels with 20# Us Braid, using lures than constantly spin 360 degrees the line twist is barely noticeable. I do think certain reels manage better than others, same goes for braid.
  15. Being a spinning user it's 15# braid for frogs. I don't treat a frog much different than any other lure except maybe a click tighter drag for a better hookset. I don't lock down the drag but if I did I'm not catching any that pulls out 15# of drag so no fear of my line breaking. Heavier braids are strictly line a management issue. Hard to imagine a fish snapping 65# braid with a breaking strength higher than that. Your line breaks, it isn't the fish it's a weak spot.
  16. Have no need for them, no.
  17. Normally no problem, the last week of so yeh there is a problem. I fish the beach nearly every morning, a real lack of wind and it's stifling so I've been cutting my time. I generally go out and do freshwater in the pm, the gnats have been exceptionally bad this year, just swarming. Haven't been doing too much freshwater, it's on the backburner for a while.
  18. I can't cast a diamond jig with a tail wind 100 yds using an 8' rod, I could do it with a surf rod but I wouldn't be using one for bass fishing. Finesse vs power is pure propaganda, there is virtually nothing that can't be done with spinning gear, relative to one's personal skill level. There is a spinning rod designed for any kind of fish, technique and lure. I can make a case jigging or punching mats with an inshore rod with my hand on the foregrip, I probably have more leverage it may even be easier. Pitching or flipping with spinning is a proverbial piece of cake, simple backhand toss does it quite well and effortlessly. Maybe this applies or maybe not, yesterday I was watching Saltwater Experience on tv. They were fishing mangroves in the Everglades, skipping lures 15-20' under the mangroves and pulling out snook. They were using 7'6 mh rods with 14 oz spinning reels standing on a flat bottom canoe. True they are professionals, but they are not inshore fishermen for the most part their expertise is offshore. A good fisherman can use anything with high level of expertise. There are just too many spinning only fishermen that do a bang up job catching all kinds of fish in any kind of environment.
  19. As I said in a previous post I don't care for double duty combos, but if I had to go that way it's spinning gear. The last thing I would want is a reel with a level wind, just another moving part that can break or jam with a bigger fish on the line. Inshore spinning rods usually have a foregrip, IMO a valuable asset. Weight seems to be a concern with some, if that were the case for me I could select a spinning size 30 with 150yds/10# (more capacity with braid) 15-18# of drag weighing under 8 oz, some brands lighter than that. A reel such as that mounted on a nice 7' or 7'6 mh rod is very comfortable formidable weapon. As a double duty outfit in answers the bell IMO.
  20. Spieth proved he can play down the stretch, Johnson proved he can't yet. I was really pulling for Jason Day, he's a tough competitor and will win a major one day. The lowest point was Fox, I thought they were terrible. Having 4 people in the booth was overkill that IMO didn't work, they spent more time talking between them than analyzing. Corey Pavin did an admirable job. The course was great, the USGA took the crowd out of it, too far from the action. Didn't much care flip flopping #18 as both a par 4 and par 5.
  21. I fish braid on spinning for manageability, I never watch my line. Much of my fishing is in the dark, can't see the line and daytime fishing I'm looking to where I want my next cast to go.
  22. Spinning only for me, I do back my drags off at the end of each outing. Most of my reels to my knowledge have felt pads, I say to my knowledge as I've only had to replace a few. I don't have a bit of problem with any stock drags. I do have 2 reels that come stock with ceramic/stainless/carbon fiber drag system, operate just beautifully. At replacement time I would buy carbon fiber, not much more in price, but I wouldn't be concerned until I needed to replace.
  23. I agree, never had a problem with a new reel. I would not buy an off warranty used reel sight unseen. I would buy a used reel in person, good chance I wouldn't offer any thing close to the asking price.
  24. If a reel functions well in saltwater there will be no problem using it in fresh. I'm not a fan of double duty reels, I prefer a saltwater reel having more line capacity along with more cranking power and drag, it's going to be a little larger reel. Not that it isn't doable. Years ago I bought a sw 2000 reel, even caught a 35# snook with it, I did think it was too small so it's a freshwater reel now. Can't specifically comment on Lews nor do I make brand recommendations, buy a sw reel at least for more corrosion protection.
  25. I think you missed the point, was my first trip this year. I've been there dozens of times over the years, as well as Hobe Sound and Blowing Rocks in that immediate area. I just happen to like Juno, it's not the fishing it's the atmosphere. I don't fish near the pier, I'm just north of Marcinski rd fishing between station 29 & 32. Not all beaches are created equal when it comes to catching, Juno can be good. Right now in South Palm Beach County the beaches are loaded with mats of seaweed, very clear up at Juno which is another good reason to go up there. Quite true the beaches can be very good from now until the end of mullet run. I happen to enjoy catching snook, I do it year round.
