Frustrating!!!
You may tell him drop shotting is nothing new, been around well 50 years. Was very popular when drift fishing and we used live minnows or nightcrawlers(before plastics) the technique was called chicken rigging. I think some man in Georgia popularized it. Many people still chicken rig off piers and over reefs while drifting. A trolley rig is a variable of it. You always have to experiment. For a change of pace today I took out an ul spinning outfit and put on a fly and casting bubble on. Had success.

Surf Casting Setup Ideas
None taken ,I'm sure it is. Most of the guys that come down here in the winter from the northeast use van staals. The forum I referenced covers the east too as well as most areas or the world. Give it a look.

Surf Casting Setup Ideas
I do quite a bit of surfcasting down here in Florida. I don't know if this will help but I use 2 set ups. An avet mxj conv on a 9' star rod or ( casts a real long way) or spinning 4000-5000 reel, on 7'6 rod,I use hurricane redbones. I'm not a fan of baitrunners, very heavy. Bear in mind I only use artis. The majority of fish I catch is in the wash or trough(few feet of water just of shore. These California boys know surfcasting, should be a wealth of information here. http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/

Something Giant, Something Unknown
Seems like a 6/0 be too small to hook thru the back. If you're going to hook it in the back try a larger shark hook, or just lip hook it.

Just do not understand how these scams work
About 8 years ago I get an email from a "barrister " in some African Nation claiming a long lost relative owning some diamond mine.....lol. So I play along. He had called me on the phone, I guess from African no less than 6 times, I'm sure that cost him a nickle or 2. I opened up a checking account, with a minimum at some obscure bank ( got free suitcase). I almost turned the tables on him, getting him to send me some cash for travel and accomodations in Africa, not that I would have really gone. This fiasco was over a 2month period, so I knew I had him going, most just drop it and go on to the next victim. I used to get a lot of "boiler room" calls. My objective was to keep these guys on the phone as long as possible, giving them less time to call other people.

What annoys you on some of these fishing shows?
NOTHING!!!!!!!!!! They are boring. 20 minutes of flippin and 10 minutes of commercials ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Only ones I watch are shows where the host will fish for a variety of species, especially the inshore saltwater guys. I watch Jose Wejebe "Spanish Fly" Lary Dahlberg Lindner's........but I gotta turn off the epilogue, I appreciate the fact he's a religious guy, but I don't want to be prostylized. I get a bit of an education from the above.

Topwater question
I use spinning myself. As said if you get a good rhythm going you should have no problem with any line. You can confuse yourself to no end regarding lines. Learn the technique and have fun.......10 minutes you'll be an expert. Try the rapala skitter walk, it almost walks itself. The skitter pop is also very good.

How can I get sposeres to notice me and begin 2 fish for a living.
Go to school, then more school and when you're done hang up your law or medical degree or start a business, put some cash away then back yourself. No greater motivator than having your own money on the line. If you achieve success you will get noticed. If in fact you don't make it and a good chance you won't, then you have a career and money to fall back on.

How To Use Reel Magic
Line conditioner.....med hot tap water will do the same Reel magic............saw no real benefit Lube.....................corrosion x or corrosion block, nothing better Beware using it on shimano, your warranty will be voided, even though it's superior to their oil. A shimano authorized service center turned me on to it.

bonga minnows?
I fish both saltwater and freshwater everyday and many times I use the same lures. Freshwater fish hit saltwater lures and saltwater fish hit freshwater lures........Fish are fish. My thought is they go for the movement. I even use an ice fishing jig for spanish mackeral.

Banjo Minnow
Last week I found something quite similar to the banjo minnow in the trunk of my car, had been sitting there for 2 years. I put it on, Baaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmm. Peacocks and lmb have been killing it, I love it. I just order 5 packs of them.

JERKBAITS!!
I use a lot of jerk baits and probably like the xrap best. That being said, any jerk bait I've bought catches fishes. Lately I've been using one that I really like. 1/2 the price of the xrap and just as productive.

P-Line?
I've been using 20# p-line fluroclear drifting for kingfish, the line doesn't break. Most kings run 8-15# and bigger ones are caught as many other species 50#+. I think the important fact is not the line, but how you play the fish. I see so many people tighten that drag way too much, that's when the line breaks. What I look for in a line is how it goes onto the spool, I have seen so many times line "coiling off", especially on spin gear over 15#test. Easy remedy for this, saltwater guys for eons have been soaking their line in water before spooling up, hot tap water even works better. After every outing I run the line behind the boat with nothing on it to relax it again for the next trip.

tipping guides (how much)
Every business agreement is a contract, written or verbal. Ground rules should be established beforehand, who is responsible for what. I generally take my own equipment to avoid those kinds of problems and supply my own terminal tackle and lures, guides supply live bait(some charge extra ) I tip a minimum of 20%, as being a business owner myself I'm sympathetic to anyone that puts forth that kind of effort.
-
tipping guides (how much)
For 6 people 15-20 per person should work. As for as any equipment breakdowns, loss of tackle etc, that's just the cost of doing business. It's generally figured into the overall price in the first place, common practice in any business.

New PB- Pics!
bout 4#.......nice fish I measure them with measurement of my foot, gives me apx length, then look it up on a chart. gives ya an idea. or put a mark with nail polish or masking tape so it can be removed on your rod 14-16-18-20 up from the butt. now you have the length.

Something Giant, Something Unknown
I own an avet mxj and they make great products. That being said the Avet Quad T-RX 50w is heavy duty 2 speed reel that costs between $800 and $1000. It weighs 74 oz and holds 570yds of 50lb test. This is a deep water reel to be used in a fighting chair, not a jon boat. They have other reels in their lineup that would be better suited. http://www.avetreels.com/about.html try bloodydeck forum.........lots of avet info there. http://www.bloodydecks.com/

where do you work?
I'm retired and have been for the last 5 years. I owned a scrap metal co for 35 years in addition started several other companies, new steel sales, steel slitting co., enormous pressure but I loved it. I've made payroll for hundreds over the years so I know both sides of the management/labor equation. What I'm most proud of is that I never laid anyone off ever, even during recessions.

Braid......
Not to learn, you'll be swearing at yourself after the first birdsnest.
-
Quick braid question
Nice reel........ The answer is not cut and dried as to the braid ( I use braid exclusively). Depends on where you will be fishing and how heavy the cover is and what you are fishing for. In open water I go with 10# braid, moderate cover I go 15#.....personally for bass I never saw the need for 20#. I'd go ( brand of choice) 6-12 line rated rod or 8-14 line rated, little bit better spine to it. I use those 2 rods for my freshwater on similar size reels. I use a leader, generally 20#. I use the similar set up for snook.

Fish Landing Technique
I do a lot of canal fishing with banks around 6-7', just flip most bass and peacocks up, over 4lb I go down and get them. We catch a lot of snook at the inlet, about 12' down to the water, we "spring most of the ones under 28" up using 7' or 7'6 med rod, no broken rods yet but that's what lifetime warranties are for.

Fishing The Original Rapala Floating
If a lure worked 50 years ago there is no reason it won't work today. I happened to be using an original 6" floater in a canal yesterday for a change of pace, with no luck I may add. I came upon 2 guys in jon boat and started a conversation and I said" I've got a can't miss $2.99 jerk bait, here I'll give ya one". He ties it on and BAMMMMM first cast gets nailed by a nice lmb. I put one and I proceeding to join in on the fun.

Something Giant, Something Unknown
Given the description I would think you hooked some type of grouper,or most likely a shark or possibly snagged a manatee (doubt it as they are more surface orientated). I think the equipment is more than adequate however if I were specifically fishing for that giant I would be using 50-60-Lb braid, 100# leader. Tad less drag, pull rod up then, reel the slack in when dropping the rod down. Get a fighting belt.
-
Missing anything not using braid?
Offhand no. I have seen it on my friends rod and I know he bought at BPS in Dania Fl. I do not know if was an aftermarket add on or if it came on the rod. This was one of their own top of line inshore rods, like med rod 8-17 line rating. Not only was I impressed with rod, the tip worked like a sensation.

spin combo under $70
That pflueger is a nice outfit, I have 2. I have the 20 ul and the 35 7' med rod, tad heavy. I'd go with 6'6 1 piece 30 reel.( they would probably put that together for you if you called) I have cardinal 101 as well on shimano scimater rod, it's pretty decent and I like it for low end. I think i"d go with pflueger, im 8 rod and bit smoother reel.
