  1. I'm winding down my bass fishing for the year as it is terrible down in Delray. Any good spots up in the Wellington area where one can do some bankfishing? The gators on my golf course have eaten all my fish.......lol.
  2. Food for thought.........try and find an abu cardinal on ebay, much superior than the 700 series, I own 2 both used in saltwater and I like them as much as my stradic fi. I also bought 2 pflueger supremes( not the xt model) on ebay for around 80 and they are excellent too, I use 1 of them in saltwater almost daily with no adverse affect even though they are magnesium (rinse them off) The abus and pfluegers are lighter too.
  3. Know what ya mean and I don't like those rosewood handles, I only buy saltwater reels even for freshwater use. The b/c grips seems like a doable fix or try using a piece from surgical gloves or maybe rubber cement, which will wear off in time anyway. The prez 6750 has a soft touch grip, but I'm sure it's too large. I bought a handle for a abu cardinal 4000 and put it on my cardinal 802, great move.
  4. I use Seal Skinz socks when the water is cool on the beach. Water seeps in, I'm looking for a different brand.
  5. This man knows what he is talking about. I owned a scrap metal company for 35 years handling thousands of tons of lead in various forms : ingot, all size batteries, typeset, linotype etc. Also I have spent a lot time in lead processing plants as well. You will not get sick from a small amount of lead weights especially if most of them are in containers. I would wash my hands after handling them for long periods of time, but just putting a sinker on a line will a nil affect. None the less , an excellent question.
  6. I've seen only 1 and it was on land barely alive. Obvious someone just left this 2# beauty to die........ > I tossed it back but sorry to say didn't make it.
  7. Excellent point.
  8. I watched the show and Seattle is one beautiful place I'd love to visit. However I thought the show was terrible and I normally love the City limits shows. The focus should have been either on the King Salmon or Bass, not both. Are those Salmon ever caught in brackish water? IMO the program should have never been aired. Nice boat Glenn, maybe you should have been the guide. Sorry guys, just the way I saw it. A big disappointment.
  9. Try it, I know it will work for you, let me know. Here is a little tip for you. If and when you tough snag, don't pull the rod, pull the line with your hand, it will free up much easier.
  10. Great set up for sailfish, not largemouth or redfish. The tekota is a trolling reel with way more line capacity than you need and 18lb drag is real overkill. It isn't a b/c. Personally I favor a lever drag over a star if that large a reel is in your sights. The terramer is a fine rod, however they make a west coast & an east coast series and the specs are different. Put the reel on the rod before buying. You are wanting to fish 2 entirely types of fish. I'm not the most knowledgeable on using a b/c for flipping, I'm an inshore fisherman. I would put a quality 4000 spinning reel on a 7'6 8-17rod,12lb mono or 15# braid and that's good for about any inshore fish you'd come across.
  11. I've been snooking everyday this week, but I go around 5 am. Bad snook year so far, but I did manage a baby tarpon earlier this week. Snook seem to be looking for live bait and I'm strictly an arti man. If I had boat I'd try up by the FPL power plant, warmer water.
  12. Honestly the answer is 1. I'm as guilty as the next, have well over 20 outfits. No question about that there is advantage of having several with you if you desire to change techniques quickly, but do you need it.......no. The gentleman has indicated that he is a recreational fisherman, not a guide needing equipment for his clients or a tournament fisherman where time is of the essence. I carry 2, the second is usually a backup in case of equipment failure.
  13. I'm in Florida and I'm not familiar with California canals. In many of the canals I fish we have both hydrilla and water lettuce (hugs the banks). What I will tell you is applicable to a high vegetation area but will work on a cleaner canal. Bass...........Weedless set up plastic worm of your choice work parallel to the banks(flukes work well too) if you can cast across to other bank, just drag your bait into water slowly, do not overwork it. If you work lures, cast just outside the vegetation, my go to lure is tw popper even on hot sunny days. Catfish........raw chicken livers and bobber, sit back and relax Grass carp...Vegetarians for the most part, guys use bread down here try with a bonding agent to hold on hook better maybe molasses, some one may have a better agent. Hope this helps you to get you started, don't be shy to ask again.
  14. I have several community ponds as well. I would do it in the middle of the night because the condo commandos will rag on you. These people seem to have wild hairs growing. After Wilma we had quite a bit of "new cover", in time it gets removed. I would definitely take advantage until it does disappear. The cover did improve the fishing.
  15. Used my first B/C about 55 years ago and I now use a left handed crank , great move. I also use a left handed Avet mxj on a 9'surf rod. IMO Better control, better coordination, a definite plus in handling larger fish. This old dog learned a new trick.
  16. Mazel Tov !! Your accomplishment has warmed my heart to an immeasurable level.. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
  17. I don't think gefilte fish is very well known. For the record gefilte fish does not have to be carp, it's whatever regional fish are available. The oldtimers from Europe do use carp and pike together. My father was in the fish business so we used lake erie pickeral and lake superior whitefish.
  18. In my view brand loyalty is going thru life with blinders on, it's being narrow minded. You just never know what may turn you on next. If one is willing to try a different brand lure, and most do, why not rods and reels?
  19. Perfect explanation.
  20. I believe the largest sturgeon on rod and reel is more than 400lb., they have been netted at 1500# I have caught them in the 60# range in the st clair river on nightcrawlers
  21. I do quite a bit of canal fishing from the bank. I'd be glad to share some info with you. First question........where are you?
  22. Not a bad idea to put an eyeglass retainer rope on them so they can't fall in the water.
  23. Alternate energy is the only answer ( we also need to learn how to make plastics without using petroleum) Google Sweeden and see what they are doing with hydrogen, it's fantastic. Brazil uses sugar cane for ethanol with great success. The United Staes is way behind the curve.
  24. Glenn has this right. In addition to crude futures, there are gasoline futures as well. There have been refinery issues . Tankers are not unloading crude because they are waiting for prices to rise. A lot of this has to do with building projects in countries like Dubai that are basing construction on $120 oil. They need $$ and the price will rise for sure. As far as drilling goes Americans will not see as much benefit as they think. Oil is sold on world market and China and India will pay whatever price. You don't think Exxon -Mobil will sell oil to us for $40 if they can get $100. I like to pay less at the pump like anyone else, especially in this harsh economic environment. The reality is cost inflated over the last 20 years or so would put gas well over $3.00 a gallon, also many autos today are getting double the mileage they did 25 years ago. We lay out a smaller percentage of our income on fuel than we did years ago. Once this economy turns around and energy prices start rising a good strategy is to buy energy funds to hedge against the pump. I've done this and it works. I spent 35 years in the commodities biz, not oil, but's all the same. Just my take on what's going.
  25. They get into college because they are great athletes, grades are secondary. Most schools make sure athlete's maintain their playing eligibility if you know what I mean. I went to Univ of Mich and those athletes can't tie their own shoes. Kudos to Joe Paterno at Penn st., only I can think of that puts education above athletics. Has a very high graduation rate. You think these Pro fisherman are any smarter. I've watched Bass tours, redfish tours, walleye tours , sails and kings. I can't understand a word they're mumbling.
