  1. Thanks for the info and good luck at Mosquito bay
  2. Hooray for Muddy, I was about to regurgitate after reading this post until I came upon his. To be open minded is appreciating what someone else is doing, not criticizing. Without knowing the original poster or the person being talked about I may be reading a perception rather than actual fact. I fish more than most, close to 365 days a year, saltwater in the morning, fresh in the afternoon. In over 55 years of fishing I have caught many notable fish, I don't weigh them and I don't count them. I see little point in bragging about size and numbers. I have posted a few pics, something I will never do again.
  3. No I haven't tried them yet, but I did catch some snook on a rattle trap, seems like the biggest difference in the 2 lures is the placement of the line eye, I will try it. You must have some bait up there, we have very little down here so the bite has been extremely slow, the fish just are not in. Are you fishing icw, rivers, surf, flats in a boat? I agree with your signature, bass are ok but sure don't fight like the average saltwater fish.
  4. I find it despicable when a person with bucks brags about how good they have it when others are suffering. I see no reason to depress others only to boost ones ego. Without giving an abundance of detail I was successful, always in the top 1% of wage earners and earned more than most professionals with more free time on my hands and most importantly employed many many people in 35 years of business. I learned early on that this can disappear in an eye blink as it's happening to some right now. I prefer to keep my success and failures to myself and talk about fishing not my material possessions. Free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it.
  5. That defeats my purpose, lightest line possible on lightest gear increases my challenge and that's why I'm there.
  6. Most people will say that but the truth of the matter is no problem. I use mine nearly daily for the last 8 months or so. As with any reel used in saltwater it should be rinsed with fresh water, also an occasional spray of salt x doesn't hurt. I haven't evened oiled yet and it's as smooth as the day I bought it. Oh yeah with every reel I buy, right out of the box I use corrosion block, makes em smoother than the factory.
  7. Quit whining ! At least your working, others here have real problems.
  8. I'm originally from Michigan, now retired, and my business had direct links to the auto biz, I serviced many of the tier 1 and 2 suppliers. Your college professor is about 20 years behind the curve, books were being written about the problems 25 years ago. In comparison to the financial industry the autos have received a pittance. They are a victim of the economy and their legacy costs, not production. They will survive, there is not a doubt in my mind about it. As Cramer said yesterday the depression is over, not the recession and we are now in recovery mode, however as in any downturn sadly there will be more layoffs. Be patient, there are many positive signs out there now. Credit is loosening, backlog of homes on the market is easing a bit, mortgage business is getting hot, car sales are trending up, retail sales improving and factory orders are up ( for me that's one of the premier indicators). Still a lot of negativity but I would rather focus on the positive but depressing the public has adverse affect. China will lead the U.S. out of recession, they have no other choice.
  9. On a lighter note I always get beach walkers or swimmers asking me about fishing. One morning last year at about 4:30 on Delray Beach 2 young ladies approached me from behind to ask me about what I was catching. As I turned around to engage them in conversation I noticed NO BIKINIS, hehe, after a short chat they disappeared into the waves for an early morning swim and left me with an ear to ear grin.
  10. Maybe I looked at the 50 which always had a composite handle, I wasn't really paying much attention, I'm not in the reel market. I have a 50 medalist which is a saltwater version of the president and yes it is better than the supreme, smoother and stronger frame, I feel it's smoother than my stradfic fi. Now that I've had the supreme 30 for 8 months, it's fine for bass but it isn't "all that".
  11. I love fishing alone, but always enjoy others around me with only 3 stipulations. 1. Don't cast over me 2. Leave your phone in the car. 3. If you own a scale, I don't even want to know you.
  12. I don't get too fancy with knots and I join braid all the time on my tarpon outfit(20#PP). 2 cinch knots 6 twists and I take my time and do it in a non windy area, singe the loose ends with a cigarette, this will prevent pull thru and drop of super glue doesn't hurt either. This work 100% of the time, braid to braid, braid to mono, mono to mono.
  13. I own 2 of them as well and the 35 is too big for bass so I moved it to saltwater use,the reels work fine and no problems. I think the president is a better reel, but a little heavier and I updated my knowledge yesterday(was at bps), the president now has a composite grip insted of the rosewood handle which is a turn off for me.
  14. Down here in South Florida, I have never encountered negativity towards fishing. I fish in downtown Palm Beach on the ICW (huge Jacks there 30+) quite often. There is a walkway that covers several miles skirting the water's edge and scores of people walking and biking are there every single morning. Many people stop and ask me about the fishing, what am I catching, how are they hitting etc, all friendly positive experiences, I just love going there and this is an extremely upscale area, one might think the interaction would be adverse. That said, DON'T COME TO FLORIDA, WE HAVE TOO MANY PEOPLE HERE ALREADY!!!!!!!
  15. For me I would use 10-15# braid, assuming the son may be a bit inexperienced braid is not the way to go. He will go nuts with wind knots. I wouldn't get overly involved with higher priced line until he is comfortable with the equipment, I'd get trilene or any other comparable brand..............SOAK THE LINE IN HOT WATER FIRST !!!!!!!!!!, it's spools up better. If he is experienced,,,,,,,,,,,,,get the braid, superior strength and sensitivity.
  16. This has been the worst 2 weeks I've experienced in Florida in the past 4 years. 2 snook in the last 4 weeks and that was last week. I've been working beaches, bridges, sea walls and the inlet on the outgoing almost every morning. Have heard of only as few caught on live recently. Some spanish mackeral around, but never when I'm there, haha. Even the freshwater bite has been bad around me lately, water is a bit high now. I gotta move to Costa Rica.
  17. I have one can have for free sp1100 7' med 6-15 It's whippy & too heavy for freshwater use, I did catch a 12# jack crevelle on it. Some of the ugly sticks are better, look for one with ceramic guides, the ones I have are rusting or just put clear nail polish on them from time to time. Personally, in the same price range I might go with a shimano clarus, I have 6'6 m 6/12 and it's a very good rod, other sizes availble as well about $59.95
  18. I stop at Boynton several times a month, I fish the inlet most days. I do know he has a decent Loomis selection, but I as I'm not in the market I seldom look at the rods and reels. I walk in buy some terminal tackle, jigs and spoons and thats about it. He is more geared for saltwater. I buy his generic spoons 1/4- 2 oz, way better than krocs and only $2.50 I appreciate the info. Talked to a bud at the inlet yesterday and said he was at the Dicks, they are open.
  19. Thanks Bassn, I don't need one but curious as to which store. I heard a new Dicks opened up on 441 & Southern.
  20. For only 2-3 hours of bank fishing I carry 1 rod, and 2 or 3 lure boxes on my pocket. 2 xrap, 1 spoon, 2 roostertail, 1 spinnerbait, 1 topwater and few crappie jigs, maybe a bag of senkos in my back pocket (worm fishing is boring and I try to avoid it ). Always produces, I have no need to carry more.
  21. Vertical spoons , nothing new at all, that's what many commerical fisherman use. banana spoons or diamond jigs for walleye, work great for king or spanish macks
  22. I start off most days at the ocean casting into a flat or up to 30 mph wind using heavier equipment than I use for freshwater. I hit my spots about 4 in the morning and fish for 4-5 hours, I'm always walking the beach or a sea wall. Then I hit my freshwater spots for a few hours and do some more walking. It's hot and humid in Florida. Do I get tired? Not very often, I'm still a kid at 63. I have a saltwater boat and use it maybe once a week, I don't like being cooped up on a 27 footer, I prefer walking.
  23. Leave the reel as is and start pumping some iron. I use an 18 oz Avid on a 9 ft surf rod and cast that for hours.
  24. What comes to mind is grass carp (actually largest minnow). A vegetarian by nature and spook very easily, I have caught 1 grass carp on an xrap and once on a rebel topwater. Bear in mind 4 years of constant casting into grass carp infested waters, probably several thousand casts and only 2, I think that's rare. Catch quite a few spotted and blue tilapia on crappie jigs.
