Ya gotta do something when the winds are 30 mph and the surf is breaking 8'. Snook are just starting to get active, been catching a few every morning, cudas too. Tide is everything. Feast or famine in the brine.

Within city Limits
Fishing for other species is what makes the show interesting, taking him out of his element and putting him on the same plane as the average fisherman. On the other hand, and I would be agreeing with you on this one, I saw Bill Dance fishing for tarpon at the Bahia Honda bridge and he was terrible. He had no concept of how to play that type of fish and lost just about all of them, all those years of experience and he didn't even pump up and reel down. The show was torture to watch.

New Business Idea: Used Fishing Gear Store
The right person would make it work, however there are strong valid reasons against success mentioned. Has anyone heard of "Second Swing'? Second swing, out of Minnesota I think, starting buying and selling used golf clubs about 15 years ago. They found the right business model as they have locations all over the midwest. Nowadays they are selling many lines of new clubs as well. Golfers are every bit as fanatical as fisherman. Most serious golfers have 3-4 sets of irons, untold numbers of drivers, wedges and putters. Personally I think it would be a difficult task. Getting your inventory is the problem, not the sale of the used equipment. Used rods and reels are would have to be bought for next to nothing to sell them cheap enough and yet still make a profit. Terminal tackle and lures are cheap enough new, stocking them would be a waste of floor space. Internet is the only way to go (shipping always a headache and expense) done p/t to see if it flies. Start up cost would be minimal as no lease contract is needed for a location and no employees. May be worth a shot, could advertise here on Bass Resource and there are dozens of other forums as well.

A whole bunch of reel stuff.....
I don't fish anything but spinning(with braid) for fresh and saltwater. For the money you can't beat the pflueger president xt, I prefer it to the supreme and I have both. I have had great success with abu cardinals, have caught many 10-20# snook on 802&804(only difference is spool size) I made an improvement to the cardinal 802 by replacing the handle with the larger 804, cost $10, wound up be a great move. What I would take good long look at (cost more ) is Quantum Cabo, just nothing better, except maybe a Van Staal.

38# Jack Crevelle
They are unbelievable and do not have many rivals. Last year in the same location I caught a 35# snook, awesome, on 7' 8/17 rod and 2000 reel , 15#. I had that same outfit the other day and would stood no chance of bringing the jack in on that equipment. I'm taking the liberty of partial credit on that catch.......hahaha.

spinning rod for penn 4500ss
Sorry for the wrong info I should not have assumed. That is a great reel, very popular down here Florida, but for saltwater. I bought a cheapy that I really like alot. I use it for bonita, kingfish and barracuda which are much like muskie. It's a shimano soujourn muskie rod 10-25 line rating, only 29.95 and it's holding up very well.

spinning rod for penn 4500ss
That's a saltwater reel, correct? Planning on using it in the surf? I've got a sleeper for you and I know 2 people that have them and I seem them almost daily. BPS inshore extreme. various models available but I like 7' 10- 20 rating line, up to 2 oz , guess it would be mh. Plenty of spine and casting distance I have yet to see equalled by any rod at any price, easily out casted my Hurricane Redbone by 50 yards. Just came off sale for 79, now 119, sorry I didn't buy one at sale price.

38# Jack Crevelle
A 38# Jack Crevelle was hooked at the Boynton inlet, biggest I have witnessed ever. I did not hook it, but after a good 30 minutes the rod was handed to me to "mop it up". I could never have landed on my equipment, glad he it the other rod.

Lunar Tables - How does everyone use them in their plan
Tide is everything...PERIOD!!!!! Well for saltwater it is and the full moon I'm starting to believe may be an old wives tale. As far as freshwater, I've looked at those charts and have fished based on the peak times. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I may put more stock into barometric pressure, fishing is awesome right before a hurricane when the pressure is dropping. I fish the same places everyday both fresh and salt.

MINNOWS
Open the mouth then up thru the head. Depending on where you are fishing you may want to try a trolley rig or a 3 way swivel, fish higher in the water column go with a bobber.

Are you a multi species angler?
Inshore : Jacks, Tarpon Offshore : Sailfish, Dolphin everthing else is pale in comparison.

Just how much drag do you need?
My first consideration is what I'm fishing for and my technique, if I need to set the hook a bit harder I will use a tad more drag. When fishing for larger fish, I do what feels right, it varies. Bass, snook and tarpon are inhalers and don't slam real hard, toothy fish slam very hard and can snap your line if drag is too tight and they are swimming so fast a hookset is not needed, they set it themselves. To add drag without a manual adjustment I simply raise my rod putting extra tension on them, once the fish is under control I almost always manually adjust the drag, very easy to do and for me it's part of playing a fish. Once I'm where I want to be with that fish, I get that rod tip down low (I'm not a tv host ) and keep it's head in the water.

How often do you..............
Freshwater, a drop or 2 of oil every 6 months or so, that's it. Saltwater, oil every couple of months ( I use corrison block), rinse with water after each outing and spray with salt x. Nothing else is needed.

Bass Pro Shops rods?
Their inshore extreme rods are wonderful. I know 2 people that use them on the pier and in the surf and I see them almost daily. Great backbone and casting distance that I have never seen matched by any rod at any price. My next purchase.

Which reels do you own?
The topic started out as type of reels, not brand or quality. 11 spinning 3 conventional, 1 one speed, 1 two speed, 1 surf, all lever drag * 1 fly, saltwater * 1 cane pole * 0 b/c * not in poll

Help me pick a reel...
I've been using my supreme 35 in salt since last November and it's still in perfect condition. As with any saltwater use the reel must be rinsed after each use. My concern is not the magnesium frame but the bearings in time. In hind site I should have kept it a freshwater reel but I thought it had too much horsepower for a bass reel. I do believe in the next few months I will get it cleaned and move it back to freshwater. All said, it's a really nice reel.

Want to catch trout on bass equipment
inline spinners are good and mepps spoons 8 gram size. You can always try trout flies, use a casting bubble or a split shot or any kind of bobber. Trout go crazy for worms, colorado spinner with live redworm trailer (best I ever used for trout)

Right or Left Handed Reels
I'm in the left hand crank camp as well, have been for many years. I honestly see no difference in a "winch" that is pulling in line or spinner that is also pulling line in, both retrieve counterclockwise and use a drag system. The rod supplies the spine to hold or move the fish . Both techniques utilize "pump up reel and down" for sizeable fish. On the reel down which ever you use b/c or spinning the pressure on the drag is greatly reduced and the reel is gathering up line. Whether it be b/c or spin the fish is pulling against the drag of the reel and we are cranking it in. Fly reels gather line in the same "winch" motion as a b/c, but after the line is limp from a hand retrieve, again the rod supplying the spine. I will say there are electric reels used by fisherman both commercial and sport that are use for pelagic species that are no doubt winches.

Just how much drag do you need?
Perhaps in theory, but in reality I've yet to see or hear about that happening. Maybe putting a clock on fighting time would work, if the fish is not landed in five minutes, cut the line. I think many ul and fly fisherman relish catching sizeable fish on light tackle, that's what they are there for. Fish I release just swim away. I'm sure many here in this forum have battled fish for 30-60 minutes or more, what a rush! I do advocate reviving them, for the simple reason that in a tired condition they can fall prey to predators, happens with sails and tarpon as shark and cuda inhabit the same waters. I'm sure pike and muskie would go after a tired bass. Apologize for going off topic

Just how much drag do you need?
Nice to see someone that fishes like me. 15 minutes of experience will teach you how to set the drag by hand, scale, puleeze! I use only spinning, medium 8-14 rod at best I fish heavy weeds and high banked canals, anything under 7# is no problem, over I just slide down and grab it. I think television has played a huge part in teaching people how not to fish, 50# braid heavy equipment and just dragging then in fine for tournaments, but recreational ................learn how to play that fish, that's the fun. IMO bass are one of the easier fish to catch, very abundent, hit on almost everything, a barbie spincaster has as much chance as $500 outfit. I love catching bass, but are they a real challange, not in my eyes. I also think catching 10# bass in waters that produce 15-20# is less of a big deal than catching a 6# in areas that produce only 8# tops.

tierra or Soron stx
Abu swapped my cardinal 804 for a soron, I see no difference in the 2 reels and the reel has done a great job for me, very smooth too. The saros a fine reel and matches up to the cardinal, no better, no worse. As far as I'm concerned the saros is entry level for shimano, anything less is crap. I have a stradic fi, very fine reel but I never use it, reason being shimano customer service is terrible and I use my equipment under harsh conditions. Shimano says all their reels are suitable for saltwater but if you go on their website that isn't the case, only their saltwater reels, ( thunnus, baitrunner, spheros, sargossa) say that they are approved for saltwater. Shimano is notorious for trying to beat you out of your warranty, 50% over rated and 25% over priced. I will say their conventional saltwater line up up is top notch, hard to beat a torium or tld and that's entry level.
