  2. The first half of April has been one of continuing fluctuation of fishing due to winds and conditions. However, I am happy to be able to announce that the Marsh is showing a considerable level of improvement in both water conditions and fish concentrations. Our last 11 trips have for the most part been pretty good. Big fish for the period has been 9.5 pounds, with a fair amount 5 pounds or better. We were only blown off one of the the last 11 trips. Fish are concentrated in the lower reaches of Farm 13 in the heavy stump fields with both quantity and quality be produced. Top bait for the better part of the day is Senkos and Senko Swim worms, however we have had considerable top water action on both Chug Bugs and Spooks. The best locations seem to be the center south areas of Pin Ball Alley with some production also just to the west of this area. The southwest area is still pretty muddy and has not been producing. On the Stick Marsh side we have been finding fish in an around the stands of bulrush, and in around any visible brush. Again, as with the Farm side, the best bait has been Senkos weightless, and the Senko Swim worm. Working the Senko Swim worm: We are rigging this bait with an 1/8 to 1/4 ounce weight and skin hooking the bait. The consistency of the bait is a bit tougher than the regular Senko and we find we get a better hook set if we skin hook the bait. Swim the bait as you would a spinner bait, varying the speed until you find the speed that produces. For the most part, the speed for us has been slow, working the bait just above the brush. Pausing the bait has been good, but don't let it sink to the bottom as the brush is dense and you will leave your rig behind most times. Working the 5" regular Senko will allow you to get to the bottom if you rig it weightless and of course slow is the way to work this bait. Watch for the shad busts both on the Farm and the Stick Marsh side. With a shad bust you are looking for multiple bass coming up, not the single fish chasing a shad or shiner. If you are lucky enough to observe this phenomenon get the Chug Bug or Spook going. After the shad pass through and move on, drop back to the Swim Senko or the regular Senko to continue catching. If you stay put in the area, the busts will occur again. Don't try to follow the shad as you will spend your time chasing and you will miss out on the catching. Shiners have been producing, however in order to keep them out of the wood because of the shallow water conditions, trolling is necessary. Trolling is difficult due to the submerged wood. Be careful of either side as the water levels are at a bad level right now. Wood is just below the surface and with the water conditions due to wind seeing the wood is most difficult. Move slowly when in the wooded areas. I recommend you remove your transducer from the trolling motor when working in the heavy wood if you don't wish to buy another. Also operate that trolling motor just deep enough to get a bite in the water or you may be buying a new shaft. If you get on a stump and need the big motor to get off, turn your boat to the side that the stump is on. This will spin the boat off the stump a lot easier. I have seen many people end up going into the water because of an attempt to rock the boat off. I definitely do not recommend rocking the boat. Use common sense and keep it slow in known wooded areas and you will not only come out unharmed, but you will have some really good fishing. Look for top water to increase rapidly now and look for bigger fish to come on top water. See you on the water. Say hi if you get a chance. Remember, if the wind gets up, be very careful in the wood: you don't want to punch a hole through the boat!
  3. If you are south of the weather line, (Melbourne to Tampa) then you have bass spawning from December through May. As for seeing beds: unless the lake is really clear you won't see very many. Depending on conditions, bass can and will spawn in water quite deeper than the shoreline. They do this to avoid predators from above: Blue Herons, Egrets, etc. Plenty of bass have spawned - plenty are probably yet to spawn.
  4. While you are buying something to hide whatever smell you think that bass can smell, you should put in an application to buy the bridge I have for sale between California and Hawaii.

  6. Geeesh - First off that tab is a sacrificial anode designed to absorb destructive electrical energy so it isn's something you just remove. Based on your picture the anode is set to cause the boat to steer right and based on experience way too far. Start with it centered and then adjust based on performance.
  7. You are going to need to answer this one for yourself. Experimentation with product will give you your answer.
  8. C-rig is an outstanding option!
  9. My latest reply to this numbskull: I would also like this to be a memorable trip for you. The moment your check clears I will send on your monies less a 25% handling fee. Please be sure to include the handling fee for the total monies. It is customary to tip fishing guides and the usual is 25%, however you can make it larger if you desire.

  11. Autopsy is the only positive way except when the female is gravid, (loaded with eggs). Largest male on record - 6 pounds. On average a huge male is 5 pounds so basically if over 5 it's pretty much a guarantee that it's a female.

  14. Hey Sam - thanks. Florida water temps: not uncommon to hit in the 40's in winter. Spawn occurence and enviornment is speculation at best with very little science to back it up. It appears that photo-period, (daylight hours) is a bigger control factor than anything else. One thing that is a certainty: Bass must spawn - unlike some fish they do not have the ability to resorb the eggs. Although they must spawn they appear to have the ability to somewhat control the when, based on weather and water factors. Strength and vitality of recruitment is dependant of many factors.
  15. First: if you haven't gotten 1099 don't feel like you are off the hook with the IRS if they decide to audit. You are responsible for your tax situation. Product labeling, (visible) is common on many products and proudly displayed by purchasers. Clothing is just one area that comes to mind. It's not something new nor unique to fishing.
  16. The only difference is time of year - what differences do you think there are? Other than in the extreme south, (southern Florida), even the time of year is close.
  17. Fishing and hunting guides have been around forever. As for that: "The fishing used to better when I was a youngster nonsense". That's a statement from a deluded slightly senile oldster whose memory has become clouded with overload.
  18. We have equipment if needed but we recommend that people bring what they are comfortable with. Rods and reels are top of the line Shimano, (baitcaster: GBlank with Chronarch). We don't supply multiple rods: (it's not that difficult to retie baits. We do not supply baits: we are a guide service, not a bait and tackle store. However, if we find something out of the ordinary that is working we will supply it. We do supply everyone with a list of baits to bring and recommend that they bring only enough to fish for the period that they will be here. As for baits that are presently working: Wal-Mart is right here and carries most everything. If a client is using our rod and reel they are responsible for its well being. Break it or throw it in the lake and they own it.
  19. A bass's vision is a good as you believe it to be. Look up the results of a fixed and dilated pupil that are known to man and look up the term myopia. Bass have the former which makes them suffer from the latter. (maybe!)!!! Some day, bass will communicate with man, and we will know what they can or cannot see. In the meantime it is best to assume that they possess pretty good visual accuity and act accordingly. On the other hand it is best to assume that they can't see well at all and choose your baits accordingly. Confused? So are the "scientists" that have done very limited and prejudicial studies of the matter. Simplistically, if you think it matters than it does: if you don't think it matters than don't get overly concerned.
  20. Thanks Sam, Each day gets better.
  21. I find the answer to this question most interesting as you would be amazed as to how many clients inform me that they catch loads of bass on their home lakes. Whether from NY, Michigan, Nevada, or California, a common statement is that at home they catch 30 to 100 fish per day but they are only interested in catching the "biggun" here. Of course, having fished many of the lakes that these people fish, I know othewise, but it is interesting to hear the claims. Fortunately for us the Stick Marsh is a phenomenon of many fish and lots of big fish - However, there are days when pulling 10 out is like pulling teeth from a hen. Yesterday we fought the winds all day - the fish were in scorn of our offerings and something in the neighborhood of 8, with none exceeding 4 pounds, was all the lake had to offer.
  22. The drift sock will not get caught up in weed. The Magnum is a sea anchor, not a drift sock. A decent sock, available at Boater's World and such stores runs about 30-50 dollars. A 17' boat would use a 36" sock. We use socks on just about a daily basis during the winter months, over weed beds, through wooded areas, etc. No wood and you can use a longer leash - in woody areas you need to hold the sock nearer the boat. The longer the leash, the slower you go.
  23. I would be curious to know if "Joe" came in first place or did he also come in 98th?
  24. New to the forum in no way means new to fishing. Perhaps someone that makes his/her first post might make one that is of such import that all that read it catch more fish because of it.
