  1. Before I say this let me say that I've liked the Red Sox since I was a kid back in the 60s and 70s. They're not my favorite team as I'll always be a tried and true St Louis Cardinals fan. Having said that, I think their $143 million payroll has as much to do with their success as Francona. You can purchase a lot of depth with that kind of money, which is second only to the Yankees and is $27 million more than the 3rd highest payroll. Now back to the Series . . . . . you couldn't ask for two better pitchers to start the series than Beckett and Schilling. The Rockies are going to have a hard road pulling this one out after going down 2 zip. I'm still pulling for them, but the stars have aligned themselves against the Rockies . . . . an eight day rest to cool them down, their long winning streak had to end soon, and facing the Beckett-Schilling tandem in the first two games of the series at Boston. Even if they can win two at home to force this back to Boston, they will face the beginning of this rotation again. (But anything is possible.)
  2. Same here. I don't remember the brand of rod that I used with the Zebco.
  3. I always wear my pirate hat and eye patch when I'm on the water. If someone starts to ease over my way, I raise the skull and bones flag.
  4. What have the Reds got to do with this, I don't root for the Reds. The post was The Indians are on a roll, two days after they were eliminated ;D The Cardinals are going to win it all or my name isn't Elmo Methusalah.
  5. YA WANT MINYA, HE DID A REAL BANG UP JOB FOR OUR PITCHING YOU CAN HAVE HIM FOR 2 MINOR LEAGURES AND A HOT DOG VENDOR TO BE NAMED LATER :o :o ;D I think I'll pass.
  6. La Russa signed on for two more years with the Cardinals. Now we just need a general manager hired who will go out and get some people to fill our weak spots.
  7. You're right, lPa1nl. But the way you guys swept us is hard to forget. I actually don't dislike the Red Sox. I did root for them to break "the curse." Otherwise, I was pulling for some new faces in the playoffs this year, so the Rockies were one of those teams.
  8. jwo1124 state: Al Lindner and his colleagues use Berkley line and plastics almost exclusively. They use Rapala for the majority of their cranks and jerkbaits. Al and his group are subtle but they are pushing products just the same. There is nothing wrong with this as it is necessary to pay for the show and make a living. I would say that their method of promoting products is the one I like the most since it is so subtle. Back to the subject of the thread . . . . I would add Rick Clunn to some of the names already mentioned.
  9. With a 143 million dollar payroll second only to the Yankees, it shouldn't be that difficult for Red Sox fans to believe. Sorry, Red Sox nation, but rooting for your team is similar to rooting for the Yankees. Go Rockies! With all due respect to Red Sox fans, I'm just a sorry-a.. Cardinal fan who hasn't forgotten the 2004 World Series. Plus, I can't remember the last time I really let some trash fly. Still, though, the Red Sox have a lot of money invested in that team. See below. Rank Team Payroll 1 New York Yankees $195,229,045 2 Boston Red Sox $143,123,714 3 New York Mets $116,115,819 4 Chicago White Sox $109,290,167 5 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim $109,251,333 6 Los Angeles Dodgers $108,704,524 7 Seattle Mariners $106,516,833 8 Chicago Cubs $99,936,999 9 Detroit Tigers $95,180,369 10 Baltimore Orioles $95,107,808 11 San Francisco Giants $90,469,056 12 St. Louis Cardinals $90,286,823 13 Atlanta Braves $89,492,685 14 Philadelphia Phillies $89,368,213 15 Houston Astros $87,759,500 16 Oakland Athletics $79,938,369 17 Toronto Blue Jays $79,925,600 18 Milwaukee Brewers $77,986,500 19 Minnesota Twins $71,439,500 20 Cincinnati Reds $69,654,980 21 Texas Rangers $68,818,675 22 Kansas City Royals $67,366,500 23 Cleveland Indians $61,289,667 24 San Diego Padres $58,235,567 25 Colorado Rockies $54,424,000 26 Arizona Diamondbacks $52,067,546 27 Pittsburgh Pirates $38,604,500 28 Washington Nationals $37,347,500 29 Florida Marlins $30,507,000 30 Tampa Bay Devil Rays $24,124,200 [edit] References
  10. RW stated: At $109 an Avid is a great value. At $65 it's almost thievery.
  11. I can live with either Shimano or Daiwa. With those choices how can you go wrong? Robert, make your trip more challenging and take some Zebco spincast reels. I would be really curious as to how they would stand up to a Peacock. :
  12. And they wonder why kids aren't as drawn to baseball as they used to be. What kid, in the eastern half of the country anyway, can stay up to watch the playoffs and WS on school nights anymore? I'm old enough to remember when the WS was played during the day and we had TVs in study hall. Game seven of the WS is now scheduled for Nov 1. I think the networks are now hurting themselves. Aside from the fans in the two cities who will play in the WS, who's going to care at that point? It wouldn't surprise me if the numbers are down for the WS this year. Here's a great article about the status of baseball and a number of reasons why it's popularity has waned. http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/103734/10-Things-Major-League-Baseball-Won't-Tell-You
  13. frogtog stated: This is the most difficult part of getting permission . . . finding out who owns a pond. In some rural areas the houses located near many ponds are rented. So you have to ask them who the owner is, how to contact him or her, etc. There can be a lot of leg work. Once you do find them. The advice already given is golden.
  14. The shad rap is a classic! There will always be a place in my tackle box for them.
  15. You took the words right out of my mouth.
  16. . . . . and 2006 when no one gave the Cardinals a shot.
  17. I don't think it happens to the best of them, or even those mired in mediocrity. You have to be asleep at the wheel or in la-la-land to do this. I guess there is one exception. You could accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. How many of our 11,000 plus members have ever done something like this? Please chime in.
  18. The gasoline companies are selling fuel to the customer by the gallon, not the BTU like natural gas. If a customer thinks that one retailer's gas is too warm, he has the choice to go to aother retailer. No one controls the retail price of gasoline. Retailers can sell it for whatever they want as long as the customer will pay it. If the government requires them to retrofit their pumps to adjust for temperature, that cost will just be passed on to all of us. Would they adjust the price up if the temperature goes below 60 degrees? Please read the complete article. I believe it answers your question. You'll notice the companies didn't think it cost too much to adjust for temperature in Canada where they would have lost money. Only in the U.S. where they make money off of warmer fuel do they say it will cost too much to retrofit the pumps. I have no problem with them adjusting all fuel to the 60 degree standard.
  19. Snopes isn't doing their homework. Number 1 is known throughout the industry. Oil companies get to adjust their prices based on the temperature that the fuel is purchased at but the end consumers do not. There has been a lot of newspaper and television coverage about this and how it can be unfair to the consumer. Here is one that was in the Kansas City Star recently. http://www.kansascity.com/128/story/38816.html
  20. I wouldn't even care about shopping for this stuff if I didn't like to fish. This is not a question like which came first, the chicken or the egg. You have to like fishing first before you ever begin to enjoy shopping for the tools of the trade. Shopping for equipment will never equal the joy of stalking and catching the fish, at least for me.
  21. I wanted an Indians - Rockies World Series and I have half of it. Go Indians! Are these Rockies for real or what!? They've been on a hell of a streak. It is due to end though. I hope they don't collapse in the World Series.
  22. In addition Sufix doesn't fray like Powerpro.
  23. I've been impressed with the Illini this year and they are still young. I believe they are a top 25 team and next year, I predict that they will be a force to be reckoned with.
  24. nboucher stated: That's an excellent idea. Actually, I'm just padding my post count. :
  25. The answers to this question depend on what the weather was like before you reached these temperatures. Let me give you an example. I took Thursday and Friday off to go fishing with my Dad. On Wednesday night, a cold front came through dropping the daytime temps from the high 80s to the low 60s. At night the temperature dropped to 40 degrees. This was a 25 degree drop in temperatures. The bass, as well as just about every other fish, had lockjaw both days. My Dad and I spoke with five other anglers and all experienced the same thing. An extremely strong cold front can stop the bite. If your weather gradually dropped to these temperatures, that's another story.
