Driving 50 miles to the marsh, launching your boat, unload all your tackle only to realize you forgot your rods at home. Backing down your boat & almost sinking it because you forgot to remove the transom tie downs. Deciding to cut the tag end of your line with your nephew's new knife instead of biting it only to slice you finger to the bone. Setting hook on what you believe is a good fish only to have you buddy's seat break leaving you sprawled out in the splash well knocking the wind out of you and then not having the breath to tell your buddy the fish is still on

I've fished Toledo Bend in an aluminum Jon boat on many occasions; like RW stated trailer to where you want to fish.

October 1997 while fishing on Toledo Bend my brother, nephew, & I caught 125 bass in less than 8 hours, that's an average of 41 bass each but only 25 were keepers. Twice in my life I've caught 17 bass on 17 consecutive casts, once in a southwest Louisiana marsh & once on the Bend. White Perch (Crappie) on the bend huh to many times to count; the limit is 50 & I've done that numerous times. Dang I need to add that to my 2008 goals! I'm not even gonna count Bream, Catfish, Speckle Trout, Red Snapper, & other saltwater species

Despite popular belief the Civil War was not about slavery it was about taxes There were two factors about the election of 1860 (Abraham Lincoln) which disturbed the Southerners so badly that Southern states subsequently seceded. First was the Republican-party platform for 1860. Basically, the Northern capitalists wanted the U.S. government to tax (only) the South deeply, to finance the industrialization of the North, and the necessary transportation-net to support that. In those days, there was no income tax. The federal government received most of its revenue from tariffs (taxes) on imported goods. The Southern states imported from England most of the manufactured goods they used, thus paid most of the taxes to support the federal government. (The Northerners imported very little.) In 1860, for example, just four Southern-states paid in 50% of the total tariffs. In 1860, the averaged tariff-rate was 18.84%; the Republicans spread the word that they were shooting for 40% -- which could bankrupt many Southerners and would make life much harder for most of them. The Republican platform included a transcontinental railroad (following a Northern route); extensive internal-improvements to extend the transportation net for the Northern manufacturers; a homestead act which would eliminate the only other important source of federal funding, etc. Second, if the Republicans somehow managed to gain control of Congress AND the White House, they would then be able to use the federal government to enact and enforce their party platform -- and thus convert the prosperous Southern-states into the dirt-poor agricultural colonies of the Northern capitalists. And given the trends in demographics, the Southern states would never be able to reverse that process. The intent of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution would then have been subverted completely: the Southern states would no longer be governed with the consent of the governed -- but instead bullied mercilessly by the Northern majority. Why, then, remain in the Union?

The Tenth Amendment states: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. The Tenth Amendment complements the Ninth in providing a persuasive textual argument that the right of secession is reserved to the states. The right to prevent secession is not delegated to the United States. In fact, the Constitutional Convention considered and rejected a provision that would have authorized the use of Union force against a recalcitrant state. On 31 May 1787, the Constitutional Convention considered adding to the powers of Congress the right to call forth the force of the union against any member of the union, failing to fulfill its duty under the articles thereof. The clause was rejected after James Madison spoke against it: A Union of the States containing such an ingredient seemed to provide for its own destruction. The use of force against a State, would look more like a declaration of war, than an infliction of punishment, and would probably be considered by the party attacked as a dissolution of all previous compacts by which it might be bound. Neither is the right to secede expressly prohibited to the states. Thus, under the plain meaning of the Tenth Amendment, the states retain the right to secede. This position is buttressed by the historical fact that the states had the right to secede in 1776 and did not expressly give up that right in ratifying the Constitution. To the contrary, New York and several other states, in their acts of ratification, noted which the powers of government may be reassumed by the people, whensoever it shall become necessary to their happiness. The Tenth Amendment also makes clear that a right or power need not be expressly granted to the states by the Constitution. Rather, the states are irrebuttably presumed to have such a power, unless that power is expressly taken from them by the Constitution. Since the acts of secession were approved by state legislatures, then ratified by conventions whose delegates were elected by the people of those states, there is no conflict between the Ninth and Tenth Amendments in authorizing Confederate secessions.

My personal preference is Calcutta 100A; plain, simple, no non-sense, solid as an anvil. This is the only reels I use for every technique know to man for both fresh & saltwater

Underwater islands, mounds, or humps are a deep water angler's delight; these spots are especially productive when power is being generated at the dam, causing a current in the reservoir. Bait fish will gather on the upper end of these mounds and the bass will bunch up to feed on them. When located near a creek or river these areas can be your big bass hole. A tail spinner or Rat-L-Trap fished across these areas or a 7 to 8 worm can fill your stringer quickly. Position your boat shallow and fish deep with Texas Rigs or Jig to find the bigger bass. Submerged bridges are excellent holding areas for big bass, many times these bridges have been blown when the lake was built, creating structure in the form of pilings, concrete rubble (rock piles). This form of deep structure can be a summer and winter glory hole. Outside bends of a river or creek are common hangouts for deep water bass. Because of the water flow in the river or creek a ridge has been formed on the outside of the bend. Find the point of these ridges; anchor the boat in 12' to 18, cast deep with Texas Rigs or Jig to find the bigger bass. Spots where two creeks intersect or where a feeder creek intersects with the main river are areas experienced deep water anglers seeks. Inside the Y created by the intersection is where you want to anchor the boat in 12' to 18, cast deep with Texas Rigs or Jig to find the bigger bass. In winter months fish these areas with jigging baits in 20 to 30' of water. Submerged roadbeds should never be overlooked, locate these on a topographic map, then pinpoint with your depth finder. These are common migration routes to and from spawning areas in the spring, they also hold feeding bass in the summer. Seek out 12 to 18' depths where a sharp drop off occurs on each side of the roadbed. Fish plastics or deep running crank baits across these roadways. Ideal spots are where two roads junction or where the road makes a noticeable turn.

The BCS standings formula consists three components, each weighted equally: the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Harris Interactive College Football Poll and an average of six computer rankings (Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin and Peter Wolfe). The BCS operates with several contracts in play: 1. The BCS agreement with 11 conferences, Notre Dame and three bowl games, 2. A contract between the Big Ten, Pac-10, the Rose Bowl; 3. A Rose Bowl-ABC contract 4. A contract between the BCS conferences and Notre Dame with Fox Sports. The AP poll has no bearing on the BCS that's why USC never split the championship with LSU because USC is under contract with the BCS stating the BCS is the only recognized championship. LSU safely at #1 We need a foamed-finger emoticoncause we're #1! BCS STANDINGS After Illinois' big upset, it is no big surprise that LSU edged out Oregon in all the human polls and easily in the BCS standings. I was surprised to see the cushion LSU has over Oregon in the polls. It is still an interesting question of whether an undefeated Kansas passes LSU for #1 in the BCS if they beat 1-loss Mizzou and 1-loss OU. I think they do, but not sure considering LSU holds over 50% of the 1st place votes. I am curious when and if it happens if LSU blows out its remaining opponents. It is very, very unlikely Oregon can do anything to catch LSU at this point. Almost impossible. Oregon doesn't have any statement games left to make a case for passing LSU in the human pollsand even if they did, LSU's computer ranking is just too strong (and should only get better). LSU is ahead of Oregon in all 6 of the 6 computer polls Computer polls, and since your best and worst scores are dropped as outliers LSU is a more than a full spot of Oregon in the computers. Some quick math: since the human polls count twice as much as the computers, in a head-to-head matchup, Oregon would have to be more than ½ a spot ahead in the Coaches and Harris. That means they would need more than ¾ of the voters to give Oregon the nod (compared to ¼ for LSU) and that seems illogical given that LSU currently leads Oregon by a huge margin with the SECCG game left. Computer Polls So why is LSU so far ahead in the computers? It is actually quite simple. Schedule Strength basically differentiates between teams of like records. Sure there are an infinite number of ways to measure SOS, but no matter how you do it LSU probably comes out on top. Oregon's schedule is actually quite good (tough PAC 10 and Michigan OOC victory). But looking closer, (1) the SEC is better they are an absurd 37-5 in OOC games. Let me repeat, 37-5! (2) LSU has a very impressive OOC victory in Va Tech (hope they keep winning), and (3) the SECCG is the absolute deal breaker. If LSU beats 10-2 UGA, it is not even close (9-3 Tenn would be good but not quite as strong). I wouldn't bet my life yet on LSU making the BCS NC game though. If Kansas wins out, they are in. If LSU struggled against Ole Miss and/or Arky I suppose Oregon could jump LSU in the human polls (still doubtful). They would then need to close the gap somehow in LSU's 6/6 advantage in the computers. Rick Tellshow actually has projected Oregon could pass LSU in some computers (although I really don't know how). They would need that to make the computers a wash. Most of the following would probably need to happen (and even then I doubt Oregon could ever catch LSU): (1) The SEC gets shutout (or goes 1-3 with Vandy being the lone win) in the 4 OOC games between the SEC and ACC coming up. Its tough to tell how much that would hurt, but it would be a significant shot to the SEC's (and therefore LSU's) computer strength (2) LSU plays a 9-3 team (e.g. Tenn) in the SECCG instead of 10-2 UGA (3) Michigan beats Ohio State, improving Oregon's schedule strength (4) Kentucky falters (Sagarin seems to really care about how bad your loss is) The only other concern would be if voters used Kansas as wedge between #1 Oregon and #3 LSU on their ballots. The three-way race could hurt us and we don't want to be the Buddy Roemer of the BCS. But in the end, LSU should be more than fine. I actually think Oregon has a lot to be worried about, because Kansas would pass them and I really think Oklahoma might also if they beat undefeated Kansas in the Big12 CG. I like to use the analogy of this being like a political primaryif Kansas loses, then OU likely snatches up all of their 1st and 2nd place votes in the runoff and is suddenly a real threat to take Oregon over in the BCS. Oregon vs. Oklahoma would be interesting to watch. A note about the AP poll There are a lot of comparisons of this year to 2003 and a lot of rumblings about Oregon getting the AP title. At this time, there is no reason to believe that. People forget that USC was fortuitous to be higher than LSU preseason and then lose first. That put them ahead in the pecking order and they kept winning so they stayed above LSU in the polls. The AP poll was actually kinder to LSU than the Coaches poll, but the AP voters refused to DROP a team after beating Michigan by 14 in the Rose Bowl. Its true that LSU lost a few (4) votes in the AP, but most voters just kept LSU in the same place. Many felt it a tragedy that the #1 team in BOTH polls was left out for a team that got pasted in the Big 12 CG. This year would be entirely different. First of all, Oregon wouldn't likely be #1 in the AP at the end of the regular season (LSU has a big lead) and if they were it would be by a very small margin. Second, LSU would probably get most or all of OU/Kansas' #1 votes after beating them, and third, while many voters may think Oregon is the best team, I don't think anyone would consider it a travesty that LSU and the Big 12 Champ went instead of Oregon (unlike 2003).
