We pride ourselves in producing a very high quality braided Spectra line. The Spectra fiber that we use is manufactured by Honeywell fibers here in the US. They are one of three companies in the world making a Gel Spun PE fiber. The other two are DSM (Dyneema) and Toyobo (Dyneema). Western Filament was the original manufacturer of braided PE lines for use in fishing. We introduced this type of material for fishing purposes in 1990 only two years after the fiber became commercially available. We have been braiding fishing lines since 1938 so we are hardly in business to make "junk" and do not plan on filing bankruptcy in the near future. Our TUF Line XP is 100% spectra fiber with no cores or fillers. The lines are made on a standard Maypole style braiding machines just as Power Pro and Whiplash. Our lines are all rated at straight pull strength and not at the knot. Our lines on average break at approximately 20% higher than the rated strength on a straight pull. We normally see a loss of 35% strength at the knot. Typically a 50 pound XP braid will break at 40 pounds at the knot. I know that the Japanese braids are very small and round with a tightness not found in US braids but is it necessary to have this expensive of a braid? We have found that most US anglers cannot tell the difference or will not pay the price for a tightly braided PE line compared to one of mid-tightness. Who and/or what made you the angler you are? Here's mine 1965: Spend the entire summer working on my uncle's charter fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico and learned how to locate deep water structure. 1972: Started bass fishing seriously on Toledo Bend at my father-in-law's camp on White's Point in the mouth of Lowe's Creek. 1974: Joined two bass clubs whose members included John Torian, John Hall, John Dean, Villis P "Bo" Dowden SR, Harold Allen, Larry Nixon, Tommy Martin, & Zell Roland all guides at Toledo Bend's Pendleton Harbor Marina. Ray Scott would latter come up with the "The Hemphill Gang" moniker arguably the most successful group of professional bass anglers to ever emerge from one small region of the nation. 1976: Attended a seminar in Houston Texas that totally changed my outlook on bass fishing. The man putting on that seminar was Elwood L. " Buck" Perry, not only did I buy his books but I became a devout student of his teachings. I took what Buck taught about deep structure fishing and applied it to Toledo Bend. Not only did the quantity of bass I caught go up but so did quality. That's the who's now for the what's I was introduce to night fishing in 1973 and have continued until the present. These years of having limited or no visibility has heightened my awareness of what is taking place below the surface. This heightened awareness has made me better at fishing deep water where feeling the bite is harder than finding structure.

Well let's see 2005 ended with hurricane Rita putting a major hurt on Southwest Louisiana where I'm from and it will take all of 2006 plus well into 2007 to fully recover. After the hurricane the salt water fishing exploded with tons of huge specks and bull reds being caught over the entire Gulf coast. My brother-in-law bought a center console rig and I spent a half a dozen trip teaching him how to chase specks and reds. My bass fishing has all be died since Rita having only make a dozen or so trips to the big pond and no night trips since early last year. I was fortunate enough to make three trips to Toro Creek below Toledo Bend and get in some excellent Kentucky bass fishing. Over I haven't fished ¼ of what I consider normal but they were most enjoyable 8-)

Matt Fly After 34 yrs on the lake I know pretty much all of it except the extreme north end, I spend most of my time down south from Lowe's Creek to the Texas islands. According to the Sabine River Authority the lake is listed at 163.86 which is a total rise of 18.69 for the month. SRA says 172 is normal top of pool but 168 to 169 are actually normal, so the lake is still 4 or 5 foot low. With more rain forecasted God only knows where it will end. As for coming down to fish I currently don't have a boat and am in the process of starting a new job which will require me to work 60 hrs a week. But let's what happens in the near future maybe we can plan something between now and pre-spawn.

Probably my most productive night bait by far is the Texas-rigged plastic, which can be fished shallow or deep. I will usually have three set ups as follows: Rig #1: A 6'6 medium rod, reel spooled with 15# mono, a 3/16 oz. bullet weight (painted black), & 2/0 straight shank hook. This is used for shallow water (from the shore out to 15'), no/light wind, & small plastics. Rig #2: A 6'8 medium heavy rod, reel spooled with 15# mono, a 1/4 oz. bullet weight (painted black), & 3/0 straight shank hook. This is used for deeper water out to 20', wind, & larger plastics. Rig #3: A 7' heavy rod, reel spooled with 50# braided line, ¼ oz. bullet weight (painted black), & 5/0 Strike King Saber Point Hooks. This is used for Flipping/Pitching big plastics & jigs in heavy cover The colors found to be most productive: Black Neon with a clear tail that has silver glitter in the tail. Cinnamon Pepper Junebug Laminated (camouflage) Junebug/Blue tail. Black/Blue tail, Grape Big Red. Black/Silver glitter I also use these colors in worms, craw worms, lizards & creatures but I will use other colors if these don't produce. Never limit yourself when it comes to colors, sizes, or shapes, some nights I have had to change baits regularly to get bit. I guess what all those years of night fishing has taught me is how to really feel what my bait is doing. It's no BS I can feel my Texas Rig with a ¼ oz weight when it hits bottom in 15 to 18' of water. Things just have to feel a certain way and when they don't I know it's time to set hook.

I can't really put it into words, it's more about how it transmits the feel of what my baits is doing on the bottom. It's like how Tungsten bullet weights feel totally different on the bottom than a lead weight does. It just aint right

I don't carry but 4 rod-n-reels, 2 Texas Rigs with 15# Berkley Big Game, 1 Spinner Bait/Rat-L-Trap with 15# Berkley Big Game, & 1 Flippn Rig with 50# Power Pro. Since I fish mainly on Toledo Bend there is no need for a leader with the braid because of the immense amount of cover. I've used Power Pro for only a year but normally use Cabela's Ripcord because I prefer Micro Dyneema 65 over Spectra. The only thing I hate about braid is when you set hook and it aint a fish but a stump or log the pain that shoots up your arm will bring tears to your eyes.

That photo was taken at sun rise on Community Flat between Housen' Bayou & White Oak Creek on the Texas side looking towards the Louisiana side. At that peculiar location it would be 5 miles wide according Hook-N-Line Map Company Inc. The boat was sitting about ½ mile from the Texas shore, so your looking at 4 ½ miles in the back ground to the Louisiana side. According to the map lake is 75 miles long and 15 miles wide at it's widest (from the back of Palo Goucho to the back of Negreet), So I guess one might say that aint to wide.

My Dad served in the Navy and was at Normandy, later he was sent to the Pacific Theater. He didn't talk much about it but when he did I was horrified at what these heroes lived through and then with. My father-in-law was in the Army Air Corps, his was a photographer, he pasted away in 60s but his wife has dozen of photos from all over. Some are of Queen Elisabeth, many movies stars who served, USO shows, and some of down town London on Victory in Europe Day. I have 6 or 7 undeveloped rolls that we can not find anyone willing to develop; no one wants the responsibility in case some thing goes wrong. My sister-in-laws Dad and Mother were both in the Army Air Corps and were the first ever couple married who were both in the military.

I normally prefer fishing during the full moon vs. the new moon even though the gravitational pull is three times greater during the new moon. It is more difficult to fish a new moon because it is harder to keep your boat off of stumps that are quite numerous. And it is harder for the bass & angler to connect. If I fish a new moon I will usually fish open water and avoid shoreline areas. The light from the full moon illuminates the bait against the surface for more contrast. I usually start night fishing during the April full moon and continue through the October full moon. Night fishing areas: I normally fish the same areas fished during the day with one exception; night lighted areas. Lighted docks, lighted boat ramps, a row of camps with lights along the bank or a single camp with a light near the water. I know a killer spot on Toledo Bend where a road parallels the water's edge with several streetlights within 10 yards of the water. These lighted areas are also productive during a new moon and should be fished thoroughly. Shallow verses deep water: I have not noticed a distinct advantage one way or the other. I will normally fish both areas thoroughly staying with the one that produces the best results. However shallow water does offer a greater opportunity to use different baits. Catt (Tommy T)

ReelMech Here are my set ups which are used in both fresh and salt water Calcutta CT100: 2 ea. Calcutta CT50: 1 ea. Cardiff CDF100A: 1 ea. The Calcutta's are spooled with Berkley Big 15# with the drags are set at 10 lbs The Cardiff is currently spooled with Power Pro 50# with the drag set at 20 lbs I normally fish a minimum of every other week or 6 days a month, once the drags are set I never back them off. I do totally tear each reel down and completely clean them every other month. I do not set the drags with any type of scale since I've learned exactly where each was set prior to cleaning and return each to its proper location. Is this a good practice or have I just been lucky?

Deep water structure fishing is my favorite, here are a few areas and how I fish them. Underwater islands, mounds, or humps are a deep water angler's delight; these spots are especially productive when power is being generated at the dam, causing a current in the reservoir. Bait fish will gather on the upper end of these mounds and the bass will bunch up to feed on them. When located near a creek or river these areas can be your big bass hole. A tail spinner or Rat-L-Trap fished across these areas or a 7 to 8 worm can fill your stringer quickly. Position your boat shallow and fish deep with Texas Rigs or Jig to find the bigger bass. Submerged bridges are excellent holding areas for big bass, many times these bridges have been blown when the lake was built, creating structure in the form of pilings, concrete rubble (rock piles). This form of deep structure can be a summer and winter glory hole. Outside bends of a river or creek are common hangouts for deep water bass. Because of the water flow in the river or creek a ridge has been formed on the outside of the bend. Find the point of these ridges; anchor the boat in 12' to 18, cast deep with Texas Rigs or Jig to find the bigger bass. Spots where two creeks intersect or where a feeder creek intersects with the main river are areas experienced deep water anglers seeks. Inside the Y created by the intersection is where you want to anchor the boat in 12' to 18, cast deep with Texas Rigs or Jig to find the bigger bass. In winter months fish these areas with jigging baits in 20 to 30' of water. Submerged roadbeds should never be overlooked, locate these on a topographic map, then pinpoint with your depth finder. These are common migration routes to and from spawning areas in the spring, they also hold feeding bass in the summer. Seek out 12 to 18' depths where a sharp drop off occurs on each side of the roadbed. Fish plastics or deep running crank baits across these roadways. Ideal spots are where two roads junction or where the road makes a noticeable turn.
