San Diego Bay Spotted Bay Bass, Halibut, and Corvina
Disclaimer: Some photo's blury since i had camera phone in a ziplock bag. Launched at Tidelands park on Coronado at 0800, had to pause for "Colors" over on 32nd street. Little to no wind and a slow out going tide. Took me a little while(about 45mins) to get used to moving with out having the peddles in my Hobie, but I am comfortble now. Started fishing about 30yds from the moored boats and let the current drag me north along the beach about 150yds out all the way to the Seaforth ferry dock, repeat 10 times using 5" Gulp SW jerkshads in Blue neon pepper?( I think) Started with this one, at 0920 on a drop shot. About 40 mins later on my second drift. My first ever Hali! Dropshot. 3rd drift was blanked and broke off on a rock or something, re rigged a chartreuse 1/8oz ball jighead. At first i used the whole bait, but i was getting lots of pulls but no hook ups, so i cut it in half. 4th thru 7th drift , 3 more fish. 8th drift the tidal current has all but stopped. I kept getting a lot of little peck and runs but no hook ups, the i had 1 really hard hit and i set the hook on this, another first. 9th drift was the last true drift and it was my smallest fish of the day. I paddle back to my starting point and just sit there, no more current. So i cast out deep and start working it back to the yak kinda fast like a jerkbait, line is almost vertical and i get hit hard. The only fish to pull drag today was a nice 1 to 1.5lbs. After that the mild wind picks up a bit and starts pushing me to the ship lanes. My arms are tired so i give it up and paddle in, calling a successful morning. Dave

Standout dropshot hooks?
I don't use mosquito hooks, because a lot of the places I dropshot are covers in weeds. Re-Barbs in 1 or 1/0, t-rig, depending on the worm used. The fish still set the hook themselves most of the time. dave

The One That Got Away
My story is from last October. Fishing The Lower Colorado river above yuma, AZ. In a backwater, it's about 50yds across with weeds and an uneven bottom at 10ft deep. Throwing a American Shad Sammy 100. 3rd or 4th cast had a fish miss it hard, big splash. 5 th cast she nails it fights on, i get her to the boat no problem so i thought she was kind small. The fish see's the boat and all the sudden i have a hugh fish on she dives straight down i couldn't get here to turn around. she starts to pull drag fast so i tighten it a little(MY MAJOR MISTAKE :'( ) The line is so tight i can feel every swish of her tail, every shake of her head, then nothing! A few seconds later the sammy floats to the surface of the water. I reel it in, The front hook has a large chunk of jaw tendon and the rear hook has 3 scales that the size of dimes. Needless to say i would of taken the tournament with that fish. The locals and the better fishermen in my club all say that that fish was 10+ probably going on 15. The fish of a lifetime and rookie mistake it. I will never tighten my drag again on a fish. Dave

Anyone else here fish from a kayak?
I'm getting my kayak on Sunday, either a Hobie Revolution, or a Malibu X-Factor. I haven't decided. I'll be using it primarily for Yellowtail and White sea bass out here in San Diego, but it will hit some of the local lakes on a regular basis. Dave

Sit on top kayak or sit in?
You need to look at this one, arguably the best fishing kayak out there. http://www.cobrakayaks.com/kayaks/cobracat4.html Also google, malibu and hobie kayaks Dave

Go To Lure for CRYSTAL clear water?
4" dropshot on 4lb line on deeper structure, shakey heads on 8lb line in light grass/weeds 10lb flouro (/8lb) small jigsand t-rigs in brown or green colors. Light line is your key, fishing heavy cover in clear water is hard due to line viisbilty issues, but open water you can get away with really light line.

Name the prototype game
I like how "bullet bug"="B.B."= "Brian's Bait" Which i believe someone else recommended as the name. Dave

Some fat bronzebacks
You need to hit the colorado river or Diamond Valley, they both have healthy populations of smallies.

shaky head
I use the Reaction Innovations "Screwed up" jig head, spot remover jig heads and the generic "renegade" brand from walmart for shaky rigs. I like the idea about using floating worms, and have had a little success with then, but you can use almost anything plastic on it. I have had the most success with smaller craw type baits and 4" senkos. my favorite craw for this is a 2.5" RocKraw by JDC Bait company. look here: http://www.thefishicon.com/store-products-JDCRK-RocKraw_40635483.html

Huge German catfish!
A wels cat looks like a cross between a flat head and bowfin. I am 99% sure that the reel was a Penn senator 114. The rod "wow" i want that one for some of the bigger yellowtail out here. Dave

Interesting to see.. Sealion attacks catfish
I have been fishing the So Cal coast for most of the summer, i have seen sealion take and bite a sardine off half an inch from the nose just so they won't get hooked. I also got to see 3 bull sealions(300lb + class) make a 30lb yellowtail explode like i had a hand grenade in it. They are a menice to the fishing industry here. but there is nothing anyone can do about it. Dave

Couple hours evening Lake Murray La Mesa, CA
Lake Murray has one of the largest concentration of big bass, due to the winter trout stocks and the massive schools of shad in the summer and fall. If i had access to a drop off i would probably catch more, but the bank access is shallow all the way around with the deep spot out of reach. Thats why i am fishing at dusk. Dave

Casting Weightless Plastics with a Baitcaster
Try to make sure that you aren't jerking the rod at all during the cast, smooth is the key to distance. Also, learn the rollcast, when you have get it, backlashes disappear. Good luck.

Couple hours evening Lake Murray La Mesa, CA
Got to the lake shore about 1530. Fished a drop shotted 4" Roboworm Hologram Shad along the tules edges from the bank. Caught two, 8" dinks before 1830. Started walking the banks back toward the parking lot working an "american shad" LC Sammy 100. Had 2 boils that both missed. Approx 1915(fifteen minutes before they lock me in for the night, i had a nice 2lber(est) slam my Sammy about 12' from the bank, short hard fight. About 15" long but FAT. I already have a flashlight and my scale in the backpack for my next twilight trip. All i need now is a camera. Dave

3 days on the Lower Colorado (long post)
Roadwarrior: Thanks i will probably take my gear to work,i am a calibration tech now, and do just what you said to do befoe my next club tourney. I got back from the trip and i just had to come here to post, this trip saved me from a complete drop of freshwater bass fishing. 4 times fo the summer, while i fish saltwater every frida for 3 months, it was actually cheaper. A few of the locals, maybe just trying to make me feel good, are saying that fish was probably pushing 10lbs based on scale size and how i described the fight. Trust me it doesn't help e feel any better. Oh yeah time for my next report, new post coming. Dave

3 days on the Lower Colorado (long post)
First hello, to all the folks that remember me lurking around here. Club Tourney on the LCR above Yuma, AZ. We are a "Golden Rule" Paper wiegh-in club. Day 1: Prefish- In the water at 0700 after 3 hour drive from San Diego. I started with flukes and senkos t-rigged wieghtless, a few hits by small fish but no hooksets in the morning. We moved spots so I changed to a Blugill DT-4, we were in 6 feet of water witha few tree stump about 3ft down. I had 4 fish in about 45 minutes, biggest about 14". We move on, and that was the only chain of fish for the rest of the day. My boater had 4 keepers that day, I had 7. We moved around a lot, and just couldn't find any type of steady hook ups. Day 2: Tourney- We started at new place, i had teh senko still tied on, i thru it for 5 casts and just didn't feel like tossing it. I tied on a gunfish 65 for fun, i caught 2 one was 2mm longer than the gunfishc tail. So i tied on small 1/4oz blue/white stanley spinnerbait, over the nevt 20 mins i put 4 keepers in the boat and released over 12 smalls, my boater was still fishless. He finally gave up on that spot and we moved around some more. I caught my biggest of the day at 16.25" just before the split wiegh-in lunch breah at 1200. My bigfish was spanked by a 20" caught out in the main river channel edge. We went back out and my boater manages 2 fish in the afternoon whille i cull out my 2 smallest. I make a major mistake on a big fish right before evening weigh-in, more on this later. I must have release over 25 this day, thats more freshwater fish in one day than i have caught in the year i have been in California. Day 3: Tourney- My boater and I decided to go someplace we haven't see before. We head south from the launch and find this nice back water lake with more depth than anything we have fish yet. I am throwing a Sammy 100. Hook in to a hugh fish, same mistakefrom above different situation, more later. I end up catching 4 fish on dropshot for the rest of the morning. So my weigh for the weekend is 9 fish. I wish i had pictures, non- of our keepers were really picture worthy. MISTAKE INFO, OTHER ROOKIES NEED TO LEARN FROM THIS!!!!!!!!! 1: When fishing a dropshot on 6lb test, KEEP YOU DRAG LOOSE. You should be ale to pull line out by hand with ease, not spinning the spool fast but at least pulling line. I had a big fish nail my 4"robo and i had a good hookset, but 2 seconds later the line snapped because the fish was stronger than my line. I know it was not a week point because i check my line everytime it touches something other than water. 2: when fishing anthing at all and a BIG fish hits, NEVER TIGHTEN YOUR DRAG, use your thumb if you need a little more drag. BIG FISH CAN AND WILL RIP THE LURE FROM THER OWN SKIN/JAW. I had a huge fish hit my sammy, it fought like hell and kept pulling drag, so being the rookie i am, tighten my drag trying to force the fish to the boat, one seconds steady pull from the fish, the next my sammy floats to the surface with a few scales and a peice of the jaw stuck on the hooks. I took 4th on the tourney, which isn't all that great, but it sure felt good catching fish again. Dave
