I use differant length rods. 5'6" , 6', 6'6". The short ones for over -hanging branches and tight spots and the longer ones when i'm fishing open water.

32 " bottom is not wide enough in my opinion . My 14 ' has a 48 " bottom and I personally wouldn't go below that width.
