  1. shallow water with vegetation is what i look for first thing in the morning, or wherever the baitfish are. then i'll usually throw out a buzzbait or a pop-r. a good way to find bait fish is by paying attention to the animals... look for where the birds are swooping down on the lake for baitfish... best bet is that's where your bass are going to be. i also listen for the bull frogs... when they stop croaking in the morning, that's usually when i find that the fish move down deep and don't bite as much, and when the bull frogs start croaking again that evening, i'll put away any soft plastics i may be fishing with and go straight back to topwater, b/c i find that the bass move back up to the shallow water to feed.
  2. in dense structure like that, heavy jigs at 3/4 ounce, 10" worms with heavy weight, try a topwater frog... spinnerbaits and plastics around the timber. the heavy weight is to get the bait down in the grass instead of keeping it on top. although the topwater frogs will work wonders... and if the grass isn't totally out of the water, you could even try a buzzbait or a pop-r
  3. bass in oklahoma may be a little different than they are here in NC... i mean i don't know if they're on a bed, or if they're just sitting there, but bass down the street from my house at a big pond will stay on the banks all year
  4. that's what he's talking about
  5. well, they'll stay on their beds from spawning season all the way to winter time when it gets cold again. when winter time comes, they go down deep where it's warmer. but all through summer, bass will get up on the banks, make a bed and just stay there for days... i caught my biggest bass on its bed in late july two years ago. but that's only a few of the bass. most bass will stay on the move, or go down deep when it's warm, or find shelter from the sun. but every now and then, you'll see some of the biggest bass on beds right on the bank. sometimes as shallow as 6 inches. that's one thing i haven't really figured out yet, is why 10 lb. bass are so shallow when the surface temp is about 90 degrees... but hey, doesn't matter to me, the bigger the better
  6. they've been bedding in 50 degree water here in NC... upper 50s but 50s none the less
  7. never seen chocolate milk colored water ???
  8. that's some good info there my friend... and colors are indeed a huge factor in catching fish... muddy water, watermelon seed works great, black works great... you want the darker less translucent colors in these conditions... the darker colors produce a silhouette so the fish can see it easier. in stained water go to a more transluscent color like a smoke color w/ blue metal flake, or something in that direction. in clear water use the clearest plastics you can find. also when choosing your plastics, pay attention to see if there is any vegetation or stumps around and choose your colors accordingly... you don't want any unnatural colors, i.e. barbie pink... never had any luck with those hot pink worms before. red colors work great in any of those conditions. maybe use a red shad color in muddy water, and a red w/ black flake in clear water.
  9. you can't do that when the bass are bedding though... when they're bedding, and it's cold, you'll catch the biggest fish by slowing down your presentation... when the water is still that cool, bass are easily scared... you don't want to make any unnatural movements that may scare the fish.
  10. bass will stay on beds year-round basically
  11. i've made some spinnerbaits and buzzbaits... all from scratch pretty much with some straight steel wire, some blades, some lead, hooks, and skirts. comes out pretty nice... lost all the ones i made though to some pretty big logs and them getting wrapped around tree branches about 100 times.
  12. i pretty much started with spinnerbaits, but when my dad told me that once i start catching fish on plastics, i will never want to go back... that was about 15 years ago when he told me that... been fishing soft plastics since... now i occassionally use spinnerbaits when i know exactly what they want.
  13. 56-59 degrees in michigan? daggum man... the water temp here in durham must be about 90 then... maybe not that high, but it's warm enough for the crappies to start spawning, and they don't spawn until the water reaches 60, consistantly... but about how to fish it, downsize everything straight tailed worms, and fish it slow. a slow rolling spinnerbait will work too when the water reaches mid 50's. try a suspending jerkbait like a bang-o-lure or something smaller... but definately downsize... same goes when a cold front comes through. i recommend a finesse worm... but what has really worked for me are the zoom double ringers, zoom centipedes, and powerbait's bungie worm
  14. we got a bait shop on 501 goin towards roxboro, but i haven't been there in about a year or so... somewhat of a good selection of tackle. when it comes to terminal tackle, though, nobody beats them... not even dicks. but i don't even know what they have now... maybe you can help me out bassin4life... i know you go up there a lot.

  17. Try flippin or pitchin a jig and pig combo. When it hits and sinks into the water, slowly twitch it a bit until u feel confident that no fish are hangin around that area.( 18+ pound test line, half-ounce jig). Also, you can throw some frog and rat lures.... slowly skitter these guys along the pads as if a helpless frog or a rat would do! ;D 8) ;D 8)
