Look what I found
Obviously, I've gotten wrong info about gar. When I first looked these things up, I read that they were a half breed of an alligator. I've also been told that by people when I ask them about gar.

Look what I found
I have a question about these things. Since these are half breeds of an alligator, does that mean there are alligators in this lake. If not, how would a gar population get into this lake?

Look what I found
This is the first gar I have ever seen up close. I was fishing in my brothers marina and this thing was dead and floating. Something bit this thing towards the tail. It was about 3 feet long. I have never seen one before.

KVD Quantum rods
I have the 7'10" cranking rod. I like it. I got it for $149.

St Croix Premier Glass
I have and am currently using that rod. I really like it. I use it for small cranks, spinners and traps. If the lure is too heavy it just doesn't feel right.

changing treble hooks
I don't have split ring pliers, so I used a push pin and that worked fine.

changing treble hooks
I bought some hooks to replace and I am having trouble getting them off the ring. Should I remove the ring first and then change it? Also, does the size of the treble hook you are putting on matter. On larger, deeper diving cranks I will match the size. On smaller ones, do I need to match the size. I bought size 6 hooks.

Questions about making jigs
Thanks for the response. Yeah, it does stink. So, I shouldn't try and scrape it off the bottom. What if that stuff starts to build up over time? I made a new batch of jigs this morning and put them into an oven to make the powder paint more durable. I bought a cheapo toaster oven. The bake setting has a temperature of anywhere from 400-425 degrees, which I cannot control. The jars of pro-tec say to cure at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Since the setting for temps was at 400-425, I shortened the time to 15 minutes. The only way I can set a temp of 350 was to put it on toast. Not long after they were in the oven, the paint started to bubble up on most of them. Some of them were very small runs just below the eyelet, barely noticeable. But one of them had a large run that left a big bubble of paint hanging down. Did I do something wrong? Even with these small bumps, will that be ok to use them to fish.

Questions about making jigs
Ok, I am a new to making my own jigs and have some questions. When I melt the lead, I have noticed a multi color, thick sludge on the top. I read somewhere that that is normal for soft lead. Should I leave it, or scoop that part out? Even when the hot pot was still plugged in and very hot, this sludge dried up and became very hard, covering the bottom of the pot. How do I get this off? I have read on here that some people use copper wire to tie on their skirts. I changed some light fixtures in my house and ripped out all the copper wire that was in those fixtures. I stripped them down to just the wire and noticed they are several individual threads braided together. Do I separate these wires, or just use the braided wires? Thanks.

First time making my own jigs
Thanks for the responses. The skirts came from barlows tackle. It was a do-it jig skirt kit. I figured that would be good to start with. When I get better at making these and can zero in on what the fish want, then I will go out and buy specific colors.

First time making my own jigs
Just finished putting together the first batch of jigs I have ever made. Melted the lead, powder painted and put the skirts together. Definitely made some mistakes along the way, which should improve with practice. Trying to come up with skirt color combo's is confusing. I am happy with the way they came out, since this is the first time and can't wait to catch something on one of them.

Notes from 1st Time Powder Painting
nice jigs. I have recently started making my own as well. Finishing up the first batch, I will post pictures soon. Where did you get your skirt material from. It looks thicker than what I am using. How many strands are on each one. The 2 big problems I am having right now are trying to get full coverage after pouring the melted lead, and how to keep the hole open for the weedguards. I ended up having to take a 1/8th drill bit to them. After i get the skirts made with the band, I am having trouble pushing them up the hook and onto the jig head. The band is moving and so is the skirt material. I was thinking of putting a little baby oil on the hook and jig head so hopefully it will slide on easier.

Using epoxy
Made my first jigs yesterday and I have some questions. The epoxy is not holding the weedguards in. I used devcon 15 minute, used a toothpick to rub some on the inside of the hole in the jighead, put in the weedguard and then rubbed a little around the base. It's not holding. Also, how do you keep the hole for the weedguard open while you are powder painting. I am using an arky style jig head with the double collar, and after I dip it in the paint, some of the powder paint around the collars won't knock off and it is not as defined as it should be after the paint is glossy.

Question about powder painting jig heads
I am new to making my own jigs as well and was curious how to do this also. I found a video on you tube that show's how to do it. Use the first color, bake it with the heat gun until it get's shiny, then get a small brush, dip it in your second color and lightly tap the brush over your jig head until you cover what you want to cover. Then follow same process with heat gun. There's a video on youtube that shows how to do it. Do a search for making jigs. It's a 2 part video.

Lucky Craft Crankbait Rod
Here's what I have going so far. I already have a 6'6" premier crank rod, medium power fast action. I use it for shallow and medium divers. Whenever I try to use heavier cranks like a dd22, they break off a lot and feel very awkward when trying to cast. I was looking for another crank rod that I can use mainly for heavier cranks and possibly small swimbaits, but would like to be able to use it for shallow and medium divers also if I want. I would prefer 7' and longer for more distance than what I can get with my 6'6". I saw the review of the lucky craft, but would take any recommendations..thanks.

Lucky Craft Crankbait Rod
I saw a review online for the 7 foot fat mini magic crankbait rod lucky craft has out. It got very good reviews and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it or know someone that has used it and what they think about it. I have a shorter crankbait rod, but it's not very good with heavy deep divers. Tackle warehouse has the rod for only $149. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Making my own jigs
I've decided that i am going to start making my own jigs. I do have a couple of questions. 1) Does the color of the skirt make a difference. I am going to start with basic colors:blue/black/green/brown, and maybe add few strands of other colors as well. Would you recommend any other colors? Where would you recommend I get the skirts from? 2)I'm going to use a do it mold for an arky jig with the double collar. I know I can get the lead on ebay. Where are some other sources for lead? Also, I plan on melting the lead and making these jigs in my garage, and there is no window. Will I need to open the garage door for ventilation? Any other advice on this process would be helpful. Thanks.

Gamma copolymer line?
I've used gamma and spent alot of time picking out tangles and little time fishing with it. If it were up to me, Give it as a christmas gift. I have tried several different copolymer lines lately and have been having decent experiences with them. Then recently I was in a local tackle shop and I noticed a line that I have not used since I bought my reel. The person I bought the reel from said let me string up this reel for you with something that will make your fishing time more enjoyable. And boy was he right. That line is SILVER THREAD. Try it, you'll love it. You will never use another copolymer ever again. Many less tangles to worry about and casts far. I bought the line, put it on my reel and have had 2 weeks of no tangles or knots fishing.
