  1. I caught my first 4lb. bass on one of those rapala spoons! I loved those lures. Anyways one that was pretty good for me that they dont make anymore was by renowsky lures, i think. It is a little rubber snake head that floats and you put your worm in front of it, makes it look like a snake swimming on top of the water. Great in slop/lillies. More strikes than frogs, but it seemed like less hookups. Im a little young to see that many lures come and go, so that is all i can think of.
  2. If it is sold in bulk, it could be a local company. But my nearest gander mountain does sell bulk softbaits made by northland. Btw, just if your curious, here are some cool crawtubes. http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=45768&hvarDept=100&hvarEvent=&hvarClassCode=7&hvarSubCode=4&hvarTarget=browse http://www.lakeforktackle.com/idea1_details.asp?cat=1&class=38&size=4
  3. Do we have anybody here that has qualified for the master angler award? I qualified with a carp that was 36 inches, but didnt get any pictures. And just last night with a 32 inch steelhead, that i took home and cut up without a weight. Other than that, i have a way to go for any other fish. So technically im "qualified" but not a master angler yet.
  4. I have only had a pike bite me off 3-4 times i can think of. But each time i was using 8-10 lb. mono bass fishing.
  5. Went out again at night. I caught another small walleye, 14". And a bigger steelhead, this one was 32 inches. I lost a walleye that could have gone 6lbs. This was because i had trouble netting it in the dark and by myself. I also lost a gigantic "mystery fish". I hooked it and i couldnt gain an inch. I fought like a goliath walleye would. It just kind of sat there, but it was too heavy to move too much on my 6'6" medium power rod on 6 lb. line. It was just swimming, maybe gaining a foot on me ever 10 seconds. My drag sounded like "click........click.........click.............click" It was doing WHATEVER it wanted, i had no control. And apparently it wanted to get away because my hook popped out a couple minutes into the fight for absoloutley no reason. It was steadily swimming away, slowly as usuall, and i was not moving my rod, or reel at all, and all of a sudden, slack. > > >:(Still had fun. I tried all sorts of lures (paddle tails, 3" grubs, ribworms) And EVERY SINGLE fish came on the fat albert+ 1/4oz. jighead combo.
  6. Today i went back to the river, armed with 4" zoom fat albert grubs and 1/4oz, mushroom head jigheads. I went to my usual spot and on the very first cast, guess what? FISH ON! I didnt fight like a walleye, it was thrashing and running. It turns out to be a 27 inch STEELHEAD! Ever hear of catching stellies on grubs? Then, on my 3rd cast of the day, BAM! fish on! This time a walleye. It was only 14.5", half an icnch too short to keep. But around my 10-15th cast, yet another fish! And guess what, another steelhead! This time a 26 inch, gorgeous colored pink, silver, and green fish. I went about 30 minutes without a fish, and hooked into something giant. I was thinking "record walleye" After about 5 minutes, it turns out to be a 10-15 lb. carp. Grrrrr. Still fun, though. About 15 min. later another strong, heavy fish. And it turns out to be a 5-6lb. carp. And in another 10 minutes or less, i had yet another giant on, and yet another 10+lb. carp. Then i went the rest of the day fishless, but i lost a couple in the fight. I ended up catching these 6 fish in the first hour or so, all on a 4 inch chartruese curly tail grub. My two buddies both caught zero, it was one's first time ever fishing, and the other lost a couple. I think the reason was because they were jigging, not swiming the grubs.
  7. I know it will be a while before i can go fishing for bass, but i was wondering, has anybody tried pier angling for smallmouths? Seems like it could work. I live about 20 min. from lake michigan and always wondered about it.
  8. My neighbor caught a big (7lb.) channel catfish while trolling tandem spinnerbaits for pike. We didnt even know that there were catfish in the lake.
  9. shoot, almost forgot. My biggest rainbow trout (not including river steelhead, which was on a wiggleO) came on a sotrm swimbait. These are a staple in any pier angler's box. Well, at least it should be.
  10. I have heard about this somewhere. I guess you get a jig around 1 ounce+, or a hula grub rigged with a giant football head. Then you kind of "walk" it down steep dropoffs, or fish deep, or something.... Anybody hear of this, or better yet, experience it yourself?
  11. Use either florocarbon line or braided line. These both will hold up better, but will still break (of course) If i was in your situation, i would bust out my XH baitcasting rod, and a suik, bobby bait, Jake or whatever.
  12. crankbats (almost any) and plastics (like tubes) are good. Drag the tubes and just do your thing with cranks. Jerkbaits are superb. Also, my pb brown trout and brook trout both came on tiny 3-4" fluke style baits.
  13. pfluegers are smoother and cast better than any reel in their price range, by far. Just make sure you take care of them and keep them lubed.
  14. Well my pond froze over today. and yesterday i bought $30 in plastics and terminal tackle.......
  15. There is a casting bubble i think its called rainbow float or something like that. It is a clear plastic bubble that you tie on a couple feet in front of your fly. Almost ANY fly will work, but the little spider ones are superb. The are made of foam with rubber legs, so the last forever. Btw, size 0 and 1 mepps work pretty good, so do small panther martins.
  16. Never had any luck with crankbaits. I did catch a sauger on a wally diver on lake kabetogama in MN. Sauger look much cooler than walleyes btw. Another hot lure for me was an orange paddle tail (walleye assasin) on a heavy jighead.
  17. How far is that from the pier marquette river? It is close to baldwin, MI (lake county) and is superb fishing. I know the guys from in-fisherman enjoy it.
  18. I have made my mind to get a good quality spinning setup. I started with an ugly stick and an off brand reel. I moved up to a mitchell 300x and a cabelas im6 rod. Now i currently have a shakespear catera and a bps im6 rod. Far from superior. I do have a pflueger trion and bionic blade casting setup that keeps me happy, though. Anyways, i saw this spinning setup at bps for $170. It is a shimano stradic and a bps xps extreme rod. Hows that sound?
  19. Caught at the dead of noon, around 95* and the best day of fishing in my life. Bass were chasing bluegills and they were busting up on the surface all over the place. I caught 7 bass all on a 3/8 oz. strike king buzzbait, white. All were over 15, and my pb, 5lbs, 11 oz. All within an hour. There was a close one early this year. It was months before bass season opened. In march, just weeks after ice out. The water was straight brown, and the air temp was around 45* I tried cranks, colorado spinnerbaits, and all sorts of large profile, water moving baits, since the water looked like pea soup. I tried a senko, not really a muddy water bait. 1st cast, fish on. The thing was probably close to 6 lbs, but i didnt weigh or measure it.
  20. I just bought some 4 inch yum walleye grubs, and some 4 inch zoo fat alberts. Just wondering, you you prefer the wide ribbon tail, or a thin sickle like tail?
  21. J/w, what is your favorite curly tail grub for largemouth, smallmouth, or walleye, maybe even crappie. I am going to try them as a finnesse option this next year for bass. Im looking in the 4-5 inch categorie, thanks.....
  22. Well currently, i have a 12ft. aluminum mini v, which is an upgrade from my 10ft. jon boat
  23. I was looking at some aluminum bass tracker "bass" boats. Moreso in the 16-17' range. I plan on fishing lakes from 30-650 acres with anywhere from no traffic to an immensely populated lake. As you can tell, i like to experiment with lakes. Anyways, what can you list for pros or cons?
  24. Havent tried the popn toad, i used the regular sizmic toad, however. Hardly earth shaddering action when compared to hornytoads.
  25. I didnt mean medium heavy as in MH, i meant medium, M. I guess i should have said medium weight rod, or something like that.
