I need help with Smallmouth!!!!!!!
I actually catch about 75% of my fish, largies, smallies, walleyes, watever on some sort of edge. Weeds meet sand, verticle structure meets flat structure, deep structure meets shallow structure, rocks meet sand, and sometimes, i found smallies group where sun meets shade. This seems to apply to most fish, except LITTLE pike, which i accidently catch everywhere, a lot of times when im goofing off. If im catching a lot of little pike, i usually move because i will only catch a few tiny bass if any in that area. However, when i catch a big pike, i can find big bass in that area. Say what you want, it's just my experiences.

ughhh
I always liked fishing when i was little. At first it was a bobber and a worm. Then i used a couple inline spinners and seldom caught bass. It wasnt until a few years ago that i decided to buy my own lures and actually try my hardest and catch fish. My story is a little different. I caught on real quick. I found that the fish liked something, and i used it, and caught fish. I actually had no problem keeping up with other "seasoned" anglers. I am still refining and fine tuning my tactics daily to catch more fish easier, but really, just get a few basic lures in obvious fishy colors and go to obvious fishy structure and catch the fish that are obviously there. I dont know what lake you fish on, but my many lightly fished smaller lakes proved this a great way to start and catch.

Who is your fav pro bass fisherman
I like Van Dam because his homtown is just a 45 min. drive from here. I like to go to D+R, which is owned by Randy van dam. They have the best selection of older lure companies like mann's and local companies. Also, they have a diverse spinnerbait section, who would've guessed? But i look up to Rick clunn as well because of his amazing success.

Fishin after the rain?
I have had some luck fishing during light sprinkles with really shallow fished flukes. Almost on top but not quite. It was really cool watching my bait dart and then a large wake a couple yards behind just engulf it. You really have to control yourself and wait a little to set the hook. I would set the hook as soon as i saw the wake engulf the bait and miss the fish.

First visit to BPS !

How many Bass did you catch in 2005?
A whole lot of them. This was my best year yet, i guess my skills are improving every year. I caught my 2 biggest fish this year, and just got out more and fine tuned my presentations.

how many lakes
I have 3 awesome lakes that are my favorites, but i will fish maybe 20 bodies of water a year, and then base my trips on those.

Threadfin Shad
Are you sure that there are even shad in that lake? What power plant are going to be fishing by? The only surefire way to find if there are fish is to catch them. Thats all i can say. If there is no weeds, go to the wood structure. If thats not productive, hit the deep pockets and the shallow flats. Anything that will find you fish. Sounds pretty obvious, but what else can i say?

lakes vs ponds
The bass in my favorite ponds are a lot like those in lakes WITH THE SAME FEATURES!! That is a very important factor. My pond (actually 3 of them) are all different. One is shallow and always dark with minimal structure. The other is deep and weedless on one end and deep and weedy on the other. The last, and my favorite is about 5 acres, and has a distinct weed patch with pockets and bottom features, and tall thin weeds in the middle, and almost no weeds but lots of bottom features on the other end. It also has a "secret" cove that is hard to reach, but is productive. I can pattern them in the ponds, but i hardly find areas like this in a lake.

Who is the better fisherman?
I cant answer your question really, but when i am fishing with anyone, I always catch a couple less fish, but mine are usually bigger. Once i was out with my dad, who caught 1 keeper about 14", and 4 littler guys, while i caught only 3, but each was about 2-3 lbs. and from 16-17"

baitfish
At my local resivior, the shad were very active and were moving in big schools near shore. That seems like good news, but there were a bunch of dead shad that floated by every now and then, probably 30 or so over all. Why are they dying like this? With all of those baitfish, there wasnt much feeding going on either. The only strike i got was by grabbing a dead shad and using it on a bottom rig. Why were gamefish so unactive, and the shad so............ dead?

Need help fishing a reservoir!
Try soft jerkbaits such as super flukes on any weed/wood structure. I prefer to use white with a chartruese tail. If there is no structure you can find, just use tubes rigged with insider jigheads, and wacky or weightless rigged senkos or tiki sticks.

Just Dreaming - but it could happen
Get a piece of rope and tie it off the boat, then tie the fish to it. That way you can still fish, but once you get on shore, i wouldnt know what to do. Chances are ill have my own digital scale with me, and if its a state record, Im jumping in my jeep, and haulin' @$$ to the nearest official scale.

Bass fishing without a boat.
Now, say what you want about me, but im a little hesitant to buy a float tube not because of gators or snakes, thats not a problem here in MI, but snapping turtles. I have been fishing a pond that i have been dying to get a boat in, but every now and then, i see a HUGE snapping turtle (maybe 2ft. diameter) cruising around some good fishing structure. Also, there are a lot of smaller ones. I have even caught them on topwater frogs.

Two pounder truth
The highest winning weight i ever saw here was 19.50 lbs. Pretty crazy. Almost a 4 lb. average. The best I have ever done was a 3.5 lb. average, and I couldnt stop grinning all day. Actually, i weighed all the fish i caught that day, and averaged it, although most of them were about 3-4 lbs. I didnt catch anything bigger than 4. My winning tournament strategy would be get a bunch of dinks real quick, than progress to bigger fish after you have a limit. Most 1st place in tourneys around here is about 12-15 lbs.

Going to see KVD and Brent Chapman
Ive seen him twice. Once because it was a seminar at his own dad's store, and he was a nice guy and didnt have any problem with people talking to hm and asking for autographs. The other was at the "greatest fishing show" in detroit. I didnt get to talk to him there, but again, hes very informative and helpful, and still is polite to the fans.

just wondering
Dropshotting WAS illegal in michigan until just a couple of days ago. It was illegal because people would use it to snag salmon and steelhead in the rivers. So they made a rule that said no hook could be above the weight on a line. We got around this by using a jig instead of a weight on a dropshot rig. It is currently legal for the upcoming season. Another rule was that you were not allowed to catch a bass before the 3rd saturday in june. You were supposed to cut it off or unhook it still IN the water (too many people keeping bass before the start of season). That has also been changed and you can catch and release begining April 29, which is close to ice-out around here. That rule really wasn't advertised or enforced very well. Dropshotting is still illegal in river and streams where salmon run.

plinking
There is an article in the last issue of bassin' about plinking. I think it is like a flipping or pitching technique used with weightless plastics.

hand poured lures
Well, thanks for all the help, but i finally made a model and a mold, since im making my own lures. This one is kind of like a mann's shadow. The only problem is that i got in a hurry taking the mold out of the container and broke it. The lure looked pretty cool too.
