what am i doing wrong
The reason : You live in NY and it's only early March. Fish are cold-blooded creatures, and eat way, way less when it's cold water compared to when the water is warm; simple as that. The warmer the water eventually gets, the better they will bite.

Hello, my name is Creampuffwar and I'm a bass-aholic
Welcome aboard from NY. I had several Bass ponds years ago. Why do you call the one pond 'fertile' ?? Is it weedy ? It have algae ? Please explain....

Smallies in Upstate NY
You will find the best concentration of Smallies in front of Snake Hill. Steep rocky drop-offs there. Like member "Tin", I fish more for the LMs on Saratoga Lake, and I am going to ask him now ploitely to stop 'educating' and sore-mouthing my pet fish, please. {LMBO !!} My sister's and bro-in law's house/dock is on Fish Creek , right where it tapers way down in width, just north of the ramp a bit, but on the opposite side. If I want to target SMs, I would go to other waters. The northern end of Champlain is just insanely sick SM fishing, as an example. Don't overlook the Hudson River either, and it's right there, by Saratoga, just a few minutes away to the east. I'd also hit Lake George if you want to fish for Smallies; I do way better for them there than 'Toga.

Jerkbaits for cold, clear water smallies?

favorite top water last year ?
farmpond1, What you describe sounds like it might very well be a Mann's "Phat Rat", which sports a single rear treble hook. It has a hollow torso, and the hook wraps around the rear end of the rat body, to give it a weedless effect

$1 shipping @ bass pro
Yes, there is a special code to enter, but I deleted it[sorry!]. In the e-mail, they say that gift cards and rewards points will not count towards the $100 minimum order. I took umbrage to that, and asked to speak to customer service, saying it was unfair, and that people that had bought me the gift cards were thinking it was the same as cash as a present. They then waived that restriction, and allowed me to use my card and rewards points to make a order with the $1 shipping . I don't think you will have ANY luck regarding one piece rod shipping... Good luck if you try though !! It irks me to no end that BPS normally charges SO MUCH for shipping, when so many other tackle retailers will give free shipping on orders in excess of $50 or $100 today. I am not going to name any of the retailers that do offer free shipping, but I will tell you I rarely ever shop BPS now because of their HIGH SHIPPING CHARGES, and have told them that.

Smallies after ice out
Three tactics come to my mind immeadiately. 1].. A suspending jerkbait, with LONG pauses between the jerks. Often they eat it on the pause, just there as weight when you go to move it again; othertimes they try to rip the rod right out of your hands. 2].. A 1/8 ounce black hare jig on light flouro line. Find sun-baked areas with big rock, in about 5-10 feet deep 3].. A Silver Buddy yoyo-ed on drop-offs into deeper water. If those three don't work....the dreaded drop-shotting a finesse 4" straight-tailed worm.

Best LMB Lure That Nails the SMB?
I have seen no real differences as to which specie of Bass will hit my baits, if presented correctly. Yeah, I catch more LMs on frogs and rats, but other than that and really BIG swimbaits, I find both species hit my lures, be it tubes, jerks, Senkos, Flukes, grubs on ballhead jigheads, cranks, topwaters, drop-shot, spinnerbaits, etc.

If you could thank one person..
In my case it was both my Dad and his Dad, my paternal grandfather. Both took the time to share thier passion of fishing with me when I was very young, starting at 6 years old. Both of them are both now long gone to Heaven, but I still share my catch with them by holding the fish very high to the skies before I release the fish, so they both can 'see' the fish better that way. Nowadays, I pass my passion of fishing on to the next generation through many fishing programs with the Boy Scouts and also through the NY State DEC Dept of Freshwater Fisheries where I act as a volunteer, teaching at childrens fishing programs. Sharing fishing with novices and others today brings me great joy
