  1. sun protection, Columbia or BPS and a straw hat. Cool and dry, now that is not possible in MS summers.
  2. Maybe I am fooloing myself, but seemed like I has less hang ups in wood when I pegged. However, I don't peg but around 5 % of the time. Seems that I get more bites when I don't peg in vegetation. I find myself pegging around wood.
  3. Bluebasser made the point that I am concerned about. Those of us in the "fly over" states understand that something dies if you eat. However, many people don't understand agriculture or hook and bullet outdoor activities. I am glad to note that many of our members grew up in cities and learned to love hook and bullet outdoor sports. Maybe my concern is worse than is warranted. As a veterinarian, I hear a lot of uninformed young people criticize agriculture and by extension hunting and fishing. Hope they like their veggies.
  4. It is not worm vs jig. It is worm and jig. I peg only when I am worried about my line flipping around some thick stuff and hanging up, like branches, due to separation of hook and weight.
  5. When I was a child we fished for crappie, and anything else we could catch, for the table. Looking back on it we were relatively lower middle class blue collar, so we did not waste food. I don't want to give the impression that we depended on this, it was just an addition. We did not buy fish, ever. We used hair jigs, spoons, creme worms in their rig, and live bait. My Grandfather made his own bass feather jigs. I am proud to still have one. Unfortunately, after my Grandfather died, my Dad let me use and loose most of his tackle, as ignorant kids will. The worst thing was breaking his fly rod horsing a catfish. He had used it for Bream, I guess, as we had some popping bugs. I wish I still had that stuff. I don't remember any plugs, though.
  6. I have had small bass turn my kayak around. Alligators put up a decent fight, but they don't jump. Personaly, I try to get Bass and Bream out of cover and then carefully get them to hand. It is more instinctual than a thought out process. Some of the best battles I have had were Catfish on a fly rod while fishing for Bream! And those biting Bowfin (Grinnel). The real fight with them starts when you get them in the boat! Don't lip one.
  7. I appreciate all of the replies. Please keep them coming. Now I live in the suburbs one block from a reservoir boat ramp. We don't have to lock our doors. Kind of best of both worlds. I am not sure any part of MS is not country except for downtown Jackson. I guess country is a state of mind. Downtown Jackson, 10 miles away, you might as well be in Compton.
  8. Thanks everyone. Never really tried a drop shot or c rig/slip rig. Bought some drop shot and split shot weights, glass beads. Already had small hooks. Gonna give it a try.
  9. To answer Tom's question, I use 8 lb test braid with 6 lb test mono leader. Was thinking of trying a drop shot or split shot rig or maybe a small jig worm. I have some Zoom finesse, 6 inch straight tail Creme and small Luck E Strike with curl tail.Want something slow that I don't have to chuck a lot. Broken rib is on dominant side. Sprained wrist is non dominant, left side. I have been working, but haven't felt like fishing yet. Just a week. Anxious to get out while the weather is so mild.
  10. Personally, I think you are asking a lot from one boat. I like the simplicity of a yak. I like that it goes shallow ( no pedals for me). It gives some exercise. It is stealthy. I think you need a canoe. I am sort of a minimalist, though. At least for fishing.
  11. I recently had an accident clearing brush and broke a rib, sprained my wrist, plus poison ivy. And I already I n the middle of some dental procedures. It sucks. Too painful to kayay. I have never dropshotted. May just dead stick a small worm, slow retrieve on spinning rod. I haven't fished much from shore in a while. Suggestions, please
  12. Got some new jig trailers. Bought an Ugly stick spinning rod. Some braid. Mostly replacing lost and broken. But....
  13. Few people fishing here during Whitetail season. Most consider Oct-Feb hunting season and football watching season. They fish the rest of the year. I am still fishing and just caught some on a jig and pig. Down here, the only ice we see most years imost years comes in a glass. Few people fishing here during Whitetail season. 14. There is concern that outdoor sports are under attack, similar to the way animal agriculture is, by people who did not grow up around it and think we are cruel. I think it might be intersted to know how our members grew up. Did you grow up as a country/small town kid, a suburban kid, or an urban kid? I grew up small town.
  15. I am fortunate that my days off are during the week. I work most weekends and holidays. So I get to fish when less people are out. It is great for going out to eat, movies, etc. Less crowds to contend with I do miss most of the gun shows and I miss a lot of football. Trade offs. Thanks for your responses.
  16. Let's think this through. Fish have lateral lines, so vibrations and sound affect them. They have eyes, so shapes and colors affect them. They have a sense of feel so texture affects them. They have a sense of smell, so smell and taste affects them. I think most people agree that for bass, the lateral line and vision are the primary trigger senses used, but the other senses have to affect them too. The right scent on the wrong bait is probably like putting perfume on a pig.
  17. As the year is closing, what was the coolest new lure or technique you used this year? By new, I mean new to you. For me it was a jig. Old technique, but new to me.
  18. seems like bass just want something that looks alive. Our jig and pig lures don't really look much like a crawfish. Not many things going around the lake that look like many of the lures we throw. But if it looks alive...
  19. I have the most trouble with jet skis barreling down on me. And those guys playing loud music on their ski boats.although I do enjoy the girls in bikinis. Trade offs
  20. So far, I have been using BC for single hook applications, including spinner baits, jigs and T rig, and top water. I use spinning for treble hook baits and finesse. I am currently experimenting, but this is what I normally use.
  21. I had an old Imperial fly rod with a lifetime warranty. I broke it twice. The first time they fixed it. The second time Isent it in, they sent me a brand new one. Fabulous service. Refreshing.
  22. Thanks. So far I seem to lose a jig or two every time I use them. But they are working for me. I really do think the average fish is bigger than I otherwise catch.
  23. I use Berkley braid on my spinning rods. I believe it was called fire line. Fades, but otherwise fine. Use plain Power Pro on my BC and have had no issues. I tried Suffix and went back to Power Pro.
  24. For using jigs and worms. I have used mono, fluro, straight braid and braid with leaders. I fish in some pretty thick cover. I have been fishing some rip rap rocks. I use a M fast rod (St Croix Mojo Bass) for worms and MH fast (BPS Tourney Special) for jigs and worms and jigs. I have tried them (line types) and like them all, caught fish with all, but I can only tell a slight difference. Braid is more sensitive, but I worry about visibilty. The water is very stained to muddy. I know not to use straight braid in rock. I have been using 14 lb Mono, 12 lb Fluro, and 65 lb braid. I like Yo Zuri hybrid leader and Maxon Mono chameleon and clear for the way they knot. I really hate it when the knot ticks in the guide (Alberto) , although it doesn't affect my cast and my knots don't fail. I am thinking of going with Yo zuri hybrid line or going back to mono. I have not had any knot problems, but Fluro makes me paranoid about knot security. I have done gone and got myself confused. I read too much. I have caught a sack full of bass around 4 lbs but I am afraid my choice of line can be keeping the fat girls away or keeping me from detecting them. I need feedback from you serious worm and jig guys. I fish from a yak if that makes a difference.
  25. Aw now, a good sweaty...never mind
