For me, the dog days of summer mean fishing a topwater fast. I used to work them slow during this period, but I find that my success rate elevated when I fish them faster.

I can do 3rd Saturday or Sunday in August but can not do the 4th weekend.

That's strange indeed. When the saltwater registration came up here in the northeast a couple of years ago you had to register with the NOAA and you got a card in the mail to fish the state coastal waters for striper. Last year they left it up to the individual states to admin the registry. I only fish for striper in Maine, so I registered online, but was unable to print the registration. I called the person at Marine Resources and she said that I shouldn't worry, the Fish and Game personal will be out there more for educational purposes the first year and will enforce the laws in subsequent years. Maybe that's the route MA is taking, who knows.

Looks awesone BBM, those will certainly work in my waters. Go fish them and post another 11 pounder!

I hear what you're saying, I'll have to find the thread I learned this from. One of the members here actually has a great system and I'll see if he'll respond to my PM, he hasn't been around much from what I can see. The Yum F2ube is my favorite for a nose down attitude. I seem to catch more larger fish on that more than anything. I also learned a neat trick for t-rigging tubes, if you're interested I'll PM you, I don't want to hijack this thread. If you're in a clear water situation, the thin skirt just may help you with a longer cast - less air resistance. JMHO Great job BTW. Buy some skirts online and have fun!

I've read some member's opinions about this site being over-moderated and I think it couldn't be further from the truth. I joined a couple of years ago and read thru some threads that went way over the top IMO, but the mods let it go hoping it would turn for the better. As time went on there were some folks who were constantly over the top and it trickled down to some new members who would not post here anymore. It was a shame really, we lost some really nice folks who had a lot to contribute towards this site, but wouldn't post because of some bad apples. Over-moderation for a short spell came into play and now you don't see those "over-the-top" guys anymore. What you do see is more and more newer members actually sticking around and some of the really older folks who stuck with it who really enjoy each others company. We have a great group of people here and it feels really good to be a part of this community.

Every year my first topwater strike startles the crap out of me. I prepare myself prior to that first strike by staying alert, but then I start to zone out by the sounds of that dogwalker over a point - swish, swish, swish, real up recast: swish, swish, swish, real up recast: swish, swish, swi....BANG! My heart starts pounding. Then after that, I'm pretty good until ice out again.

How deep are you fishing?

Well it's been a while since I've been out fishing. Went thru a stretch where I worked grave yard shift - 9:00pm - 9:00 am - and now my project is winding down a bit for this phase anyway. Next phase should be cut and dry and I'm hoping to hit Buckmasters on Friday, which leads me to my question: Where are you guys finding the fish?

Not at all, in fact you'll find that most folks here would encourage it. I noticed that you mention slowing down on those short strikers, I actually go the other way and speed up. IMHO, you had the right lure - color, flash etc - but the fish aborted the mission of blasting your buzzbait for what ever reason. Speed up, and that buzzbait gets blasted, the fish will not have enough time to "think" about your bait and will just react to striking.

I'ts very easy and you really don't need real expensive equipment to do it either, in my opinion. I'm still using my starter equipment I got about 15 years ago when I started tieing flies. The trebles you put on your topwaters certainly changes the profile and look of the bait. Most store bought dressed trebles are "overdone" in my opinion, by doing your own you can put the right amount of material without affecting the action of the bait, especially on dog walking type baits.

There was a thread in this forum a couple of years ago where one of the members had come up with a computer assisted design for a lipless crank, had it cut-out and was getting ready duplicate the prototype. I don't remember how it came out or if he took it any further after his wife delivered their child. Not to burst your bubble, I'm not sure you could buy the machine, cutters etc for under 2K, I may be wrong, but it would appear to me that the equipment would be a little more expensive than that. JMO

It must have been nice to get out on the water either way. I've never caught blue runners or kings,but bonita on light gear are a lot of fun IMHO. Heck, bonita on a fly rod is a great experience. Congrats on your day SirSnook!

I've traditionally stayed in the so-called "safe zone" or "optimal conditions zone" when it comes to colors/conditions as to when to use certain lures on a given day, until this year. Back in the late 90's/early 2000's bright colors - caution orange, bubble gum, flourescent pink come to mind - were used by tourney fishermen with great results. Well I tried them out on my clear waters this year and they work very well. What's all this mean? Use whatever color you think is best and work/present the bait the best way you know how.
