Hey Steve, welcome aboard!

It's definitely worth a look, it provides a great ambush spot, depending on where it's located in the lake/river. If it has another piece of structure near or in it - rock, stump, laydown etc. - even better. The slightest drop in elevation can be a bass magnate.

Basically you want mimic a t-rig worm: Bullet shape head as Siebert mentions and the line tie that comes out as close to inline as possible to the hook. For grass jigs that would be approx 30*. That doesn't mean that the other jigs won't work, you just have better options to make the day more enjoyable.

Would you happen to know the water temps and did the lake turnover?

Congrats on the family expansion Markh024! You won't have time to make lures with 2 new borns...LOL You will certainly have your work cut out for you learning to fish deeper lakes. Learning and adapting to off-shore structure fishing is quite a task in and of itself. Pull up a chair and read some of the articles here on BR, lots of great information there. And when you figure it out, let me know...LOL Good luck with you family additions.

Fronts can be tough, no doubt about it. Bass aren't actively feeding, and the strike zone shrinks. Some areas to look at: If they were near a bush they would be in the middle of it, if the were on a main lake point they may have moved back and suspended in deeper water, if they were on a flat they may have moved to a creek channel or the nearest drop and if they were on the edge of a main lake channel they may drop right in it. So maybe check some of those areas and if your lures aren't working maybe downsizing your offering may help.

Denny Brauer fan here. I've read both his books, Winning Tournament Tactics and Jig Fishing Secrets. Winning Tournament Tactics has chapters covering seasonal bass location, weather conditions, water conditions, cover and structure, lure selection and techniques, to name a few. Jig Fishing Secrets has chapters covering seasonal bass location, weather conditions, water conditions, cover and structure and jig fishing techniques. Both were written back in the '90's but are great reads for $15/book, IMHO.

I don't see a problem with your rig and lure choices.

I agree with raul's post, let the fish tell you what they want and in your case the fish did. You reeled in quickly and got a hit but instead of tying on a faster moving lure you used a slow moving one. If I'm fishing say a spinnerbait, I'll start out slowrolling it. If a fish hits and misses, I throw right back in and reel quicker. 9 times out of 10 that fish is hooked on a quicker retrieve. I've had days where it went the other way and had to adjust slower. You just never know. BTW: SirSnook, great advice!

All good suggestions here, I would like to add that you may want to opt for a rattle to the bass locate your color selection in your dirty Central Kansas waters? Just a thought?
