Palomar for braid- retie when I see any fraying at all. San Diego Jam for all others- retie if I see or feel a nick anywhere in the line. I'll also retie after 5 -6 fish, or sooner if fish had to be dragged out of cover a few times. Mike

In the back, just below where the hook point rest's on top for a horizontal fall or just past the nose for a more verticle one. I use either ribbed finishing nail's or the packaged short ones. Go slow when you put it in, theres not a lot of room. Mike

I'm the opposite... I always trim mine regardless of the brand,. I trim to where the edge of the guard is even with the barb of the hook. I find that the stiffness after trimming is not that big of a deal. Then spread them out a little. Mike
