Frankly, that's gonna be a little tough. Basically means you'd be looking to buy used PQs/ Curado B's/ Citica D's and Berkley Lightning rods. Why do you feel you need six setups anyway? Roadwarrior has a thread stickied on top on how you can get by fine with three rigs.

I like slower reels. I find it easier to speed up than slow down. Hatrix nailed it perfectly. Most people fish waaay too fast. Sometimes speed catches fish, sometimes it doesn't. Even 2 to 3 seconds per reel handle turn is actually reeling quite fast. Heck, that's my normal big bait retrieve. Just look at the spool and see how fast it's turning over if you don't believe me.

Last I heard, Craig DeFronzo moved to Florida, and was busy fishing swimbaits! The article is probably pretty old. Off topic, but Tom, please tell us how we should decide on the length of line between the sinker and the hook on a slip-shot/ split-shot/ c-rig? Even more off-topic. That was my first thought, but apparently this jig has a short shank 2X thick hook. Would you recommend this jig to be fished on long casts even if the head shape and the hook angle are all right?

Leader knot- I tie a new leader on before every trip. Lure knot- retie as often as needed. Run the first few feet of line through my fingertips every few casts (I fish a lot of rocks with low pound test line).

I have a "no-good point" in a local res- because I never ever caught- or even seen- a decent fish there. Another one is called the 6 pounder point, because I caught my first big fish (no points for guessing what it weighed) off that spot. Caught a few more big fish, including an 8.5, off that point, but the name hasn't changed.

Maybe you could Florida-rig them if they're too light? I fish huddlebugs on all sorts of rigs if that's of any help.

What on earth is a "structure jig" (too lazy to google)? EDIT: nvm, found them on TW. Nu-jigs are by far the most snag-resistant jigs I've ever had the pleasure of fishing. (Unfortunately they're a little too pricey, and I tie my own anyway.

Now, I don't fish a ton of different lures- a couple classes of bottom baits, and two or three covering-water type of baits, and swimbaits- which would be another whole can of worms (lol). I have confidence in those. But fishing one single style of bait is not for me. "You always should follow what the fish want. I fish 3/8 oz jigs on a 2.5-3 power Kistler rod; casting jigs, light cover. Had a 3 power NRX before, that was great too. The problem is there's no industry standard regarding power, and we haven't even started talking about action. I once had a 3 power Powell, and that was a great rod; but not good for any jigs lighter than 5/8 oz lol. And then you have your personal preferences regarding how much you want the rod to load while casting and fishing. I think your choices might be somewhat in line with mine. I like the bait to slightly overpower the rod.

12# Tatsu for upto 1/2 oz jigs- that's all I throw anyway.

Buy a house brand rod (BPS/ Cabelas etc) and an used 2500 size spinning reel. Should work great.

I was not asking a question. I was trying to tell you that I don't agree with what you said. FB jig is a type of casting jig. You cast it out, and fish it back along the bottom. Personally, I don't like FB heads because the flat head tends to pick up trash off the bottom (lots of isolated grass pockets where I fish). I tie my own jigs on a custom standup head with long shank light wire hooks. It's not a football jig, but still a casting jig due to the hook design and the fact that it's optimized to be fished back along the bottom on a long cast. The hook setup is different for short-line presentations (compare a typical brush jig with a FB jig). P.S. Anyone interested in casting jigs should read Tom's horizontal jigging article.

Please explain why a football jig is not a casting jig, and why a casting jig is ideal for short-line heavy cover presentations. Please also include what style (gauge, shank length, angle, and gap) of hooks you like on your casting jigs.

I can only speak for myself. But it *seems* I'm getting more bites with straight FC than I was with braid and leader. No, I am NOT getting more bites, I'm just detecting more bites. If I'm not fishing in less than 5FOW, and I don't 99.9% of the time, there's no reason for me to pick braid, unless I wanted to catch less fish.

Yes, of course seasons have the bigger influence. I was wondering about how they position themselves during one given season; let's say over one full cycle during winter, since that's a stable period, and fish can use the whole water column. Also, I'm not talking about night fishing. I don't fish at night, and none of my data points were caught at night.
