Thought I Caught My Biggest Bass Ever On A Jig, But It Was A Catfish (Picture)
It's a bullhead. You can tell because of the rounded tail similar to a flathead with the rounded head like a channel cat. That's a really nice bullhead too, probably a yellow bullhead it looks like. If it was a flathead it would have a flat head (duh) with a severe under bite and a rounded tail. If it were a channel it would have a rounded head with a deeply forked tail.

Let me know how you do, I'll be down there Wednesday afternoon.

How Daring Are You???
I have so much confidence in this bait after fishing it for just a week or so. It's really been surprising the number of fish I can move with this thing. I haven't gotten many of them to commit but I haven't really had much good conditions for the bait either so I'm hoping as fall gets closer I'll get more takers.

Are There Any Lakes Near You That You Refuse To Fish?
Most of the lakes close to me really suck and I'd rather drive a little further to a better lake than spend more time beating myself up on a bad lake. One lake in particular I haven't been to in close to 10 years despite being 20 minutes from me. Last time I went we fished hard for 10 hours to catch 2 dinks and a catfish, haven't been back since and from the reports I hear it isn't worth going back for.

Good Lures
Unless you're in a boat or have some way of getting out past that weedline there's nothing in the box on the right that I'd even try to fish. The spinnerbaits and buzzbaits in the box on the left should catch some fish and stay fairly weedless though.

How Many Of You Dont Eat Fish?
The only fish I like is mainly saltwater fish, seared ahi steaks, halibut, grouper, all good. I don't really eat of the fish I catch anymore. I'll eat about any other kind of seafood, just not a big fan of fish.

Making A Change In Line.
I fish Nanofil (bright white) with a fluoro leader in clear water for smallmouth and have no problem getting them to bite.

Re: Wyandotte County Lake
Wrong time of year to be out there. It's a spring and fall lake for sure. Still, since they white bass population exploded the bass population seems to have almost disappeared.

Casting "over" Someone Defined
Most tournament circuits have a grieving process you can go through if someone does back boat you. I had a guy to it to me badly at Table Rock a few years ago. He was paralleling the dropoffs near the shoreline leaving me with very little room, if I was casting towards shore. I put a shakyhead on and scratched out the only keeper put in the boat that day It was extremely tough fishing that day and I even managed to cash a check with that one keeper for the nonboater side.

Help Me Guess The Weight.
The belly looks really distorted, must have a belly full of bluegills. It would be irresponsible for me to estimate the weight of your fish though as I have no real experience weighing fish

Kc Area Fall Get Together 2013
That looks like a pretty sweet place to stay! I know exactly where it's at on the lake and it's actually pretty good fishing right in front of it

The Havoc Pit Boss Is........
They're probably my favorite pitching bait in heavy cover. Really isn't a color that I don't like but Summer craw, Big Texan, and Lime-Purple Passion are my favorites. No better bluegill imitation than the Lime-Purple Passion with the tails dipped in chartreuse JJ's IMO. The fish slam that color in shoreline vegetation when they're keying on gills.

Favorite Brand Of Balsa Crankbaits
Not balsa but the Rick Clunn Thunder Shad is a great bait. I have a bunch I keep just for tournaments and of those a handful are really special. I believe they're a cedar bait though.

Anyone Throwing A Lews?
I have a Lew's Speed Spool on my spinnerbait rod. It was finicky to set it properly and backlashed a lot at first but now that I have it set right and rarely throw anything else on it I can cast it a mile and really like it. It's been a great reel for $100 but it has started making some noise on the cast recently after a couple years of use. I'm sure once I send it in to get cleaned this winter it will be good as new.

Need Help!!! Sick With The Sick Fish
This is how I rig my 4" Sick Fish. I've hooked very few fish on the regular hook but the hook up ratio is great with the belly treble and if you rig it right it can still be fished in pretty snaggy areas. The way I have the treble laying in the picture if you push the top point into the bait further it keeps the other two points close to the belly of the bait and behind the lead so it comes through stuff surprisingly well.

Ever Caught A Meanmouth?
They get caught at Table Rock a lot, only place I've ever caught one. I've only caught one and it was oddly enough the only fish I could get to eat an A rig that day. Thankfully there was a long time guide fishing close by to confirm it was what I thought it was. Unfortunately I got one picture with my cheap digital camera and it turned out pretty poorly but you can still see the unique markings on it.

Caught Or Bought ?
I don't eat the fish I catch so the only fish I ever buy are minnows

For Us KC Area Guys - Fishing Reports
Peter and I night fished Perry Wednesday night into Thursday morning. It was a serious grind for most of the night. I caught a couple dinks on a chatterbait in Rock Creek Marina and Peter caught a little drum and a good sized gar. We ran to the other Marina by the dam where I caught a couple more dinks and a couple drum. We were feeling pretty beat down by then and thinking about a move to somewhere else or just calling it a night. Made a run to the Slough Creek bridge. We caught a couple more drum and then I finally caught a smallmouth and largemouth on back to back casts. Little bit further I caught another largemouth and then another. We went under the bridge and decided to fish back the way we just came. Not long after we headed back Peter hooked what we thought might be another big drum until it jumped. I scrambled for the net in the dark and managed to get her netted, 5lbs 1oz on a chatterbait. We jumped across to the riprap on the north side of the bridge and shortly after that move I stuck a solid fish on my chatterbait that went 4lbs 1oz. I got brave and started throwing my 7" Slammer, apparently I wasn't the only one feeling brave. Just like last time, once it got sunny it got really tough. A few more bass, a flathead, and I'm sure some more drum were about it, except for a very skinny 3.5 pounder that was 20" long that I caught on a baby brush hog.

Casting "over" Someone Defined
In a tournament the generally accepted practice if you're in the back of the boat is to pretend there's a line through the middle of the boat to the shoreline and not to cast past that line. This is only in draw tournaments when you get paired with someone you don't know. If it's a buddy tournament what RW described is just fine with me. The problem is when the guy in the front is fishing a slow moving bait and the guy in the back casts over his line with a fast moving bait and makes it impossible for him to finish his retrieve properly.

Re: Wyandotte County Lake
First night back to the Wednesday nighters last night. Fishing was terrible and we were having a very difficult time converting on the few bites we were getting. Right as we were ready to admit defeat and head in a fish destroyed Chris' topwater and made it to the boat (barely). 15 boats weighed in 4 fish, our one was good enough for 4th place and first out of the money! Someone weighed in a 5.1 pounder though, I think we may have seen them catch that one.
