  1. Welcome! I'd highly suggest finding a body of water with a big population of bluegills or sunfish, size is really irrelevant. Get some nightcrawlers and a small bobber and just let him catch fish. I have a 3 year old that loves to fish, but even when we're catching fish he has the attention span of a 3 year old. I have a couple hot spots where a worm and bobber barely comes to rest before it's dancing with bluegills pecking at the worm. He doesn't care about the size of the fish, just needs to be catching them. We catch bluegills for 15-30 minutes, throw rocks in the water for another 5-10 minutes, then we go home. Invest the time keeping him happy and interested now and hopefully have a fishing buddy for the rest of your life that's what I'm working on.
  2. I carry while I mow the yard Of course I carry while I'm in the boat. Not only because of all the crazy people out there, but because of my occupation.
  3. I agree with the fish becoming conditoned, not so much to the lures, but to you. When you walk to the pond they feel the vibration. When you cast they feel the splash and vibration of your bait. They see and feel you walking along the shoreline. I've seen fish in pressured ponds become almost impossible to catch because they learn not to bite when they sense fishermen are present.
  4. No problem. Pitching you actually release line from the reel and make a short underhand and backhanded cast, or pitch. Flipping you pull line from the reel and use a pendulum motion with the rod tip to deliver the bait, but the reel is never disengaged. Flipping is almost exclusively used in very heavy cover situations.
  5. You have to reel very slowly or the bait rockets to the surface. Plastic is much stiffer than I'd hoped, resulting in very little tail movement. It has a very strong smell to it. I've fished it a few times and had exactly 1 bite, which didn't connect. Despite the lack of bites, a good portion of the paint is peeling off the bait, revealing clear plastic below that realistic looking finish.
  6. 10' wide of the target? I'm thinking you're talking about pitching, not flipping. A normal flip isn't going to go much further than 10'.
  7. I have my preferences, but no brand loyalty.
  8. Cut it out?? I think I'd have just opted for some pliers and a hard jerk over cutting it out, especially in the middle of your thumb. Line method, push it through and cut it, or ER are the only options I consider.
  9. I once went fishing when my wife had told me, "Do whatever you want", when she clearly didn't mean it.
  10. Yes, it'll be in a different video.
  11. I have a couple, they're solid baits. The whole Berkley lineup of hard baits has been very productive for me. Nice to have a reasonably priced hardbait option that comes in good colors AND with good hardware.
  12. With the correct weight and hook size, a weedguard helps very little. A Ned rig isn't meant to be fished in heavy cover, but it will come over limbs and through sparse cover very well as long as it's a head that fits into the traditional Ned rig standards.
  13. Rod and reel is personal preference, I use several different rods for different walking baits, but they're all fished on braid.

  16. Trout actually have pretty soft mouths and they're usually pretty small compared to the size of the fish. What gear are you using? I had issues keeping them hooked for awhile until I found I was fighting them too hard and tearing the hooks out.
  17. The buffalo pile into the warm water discharge at one of the power plant lakes I fish, to the point it's difficult to fish a jigging spoon for wipers most days. They are fun to fight though, but not much fun to deal with once worn out. I've got them up to 35 pounds. They're good fighters though, occasionally I'll even get one that tailwalks like a marlin. This is a pretty average one, and you can see the missing scales on the side from where it was hooked. They pull like a truck when they're stuck in the side and get into the current.
  18. Yes it is. It has down image, side image, and traditional sonar, along with GPS. It's also preloaded with lots of contour maps. Most all the lakes I fish are in it, even the small ones that are only 100 acres or so.
  19. Those water temps are way past spawning temps around here, I imagine it's the same for Florida. Topwater should absolutely be in your arsenal in 70 degree water. That's about optimal water temps for topwater IMO.
  20. Great looking fish. Where did he catch them at?
