  1. the minimum length of a rod is what is long enuf for you to reach around the front of the yak when a fish goes from one side to the other. If the rod is too short the line will hang up on the nose of the yak....just for thot here in this discussion
  2. I use the stock holders for rods I want to reach more quickly or trolling with. The ones on the crate I use to store til I need them. I have one holder from the rod pod lid too that I use while fishing. Remeber to test anything that is a permanent mod that might interfere with the paddle strokes.
  3. yep, either works well which one did you end up buying?
  4. you said sedan so the roof height isnt like a truck with a rack. I do have issues getting my T13 into the J racks on my Ford Ranger 4x4 with a rack. I have shoulder issues tho. So, Im thinking that you can do it if no shoulder issues. I use a J rack for my 2nd yak if I have someone else going. Otherwise I lay mine upside down flat on the cross bars which are covered in large pool noodles that are wrapped with plumbers tape. The slide out load bar should make it a breeze for you. I also find that you need to lay a piece of carpet, or better a piece of rubber floor mat, on the ground for the other end of the yak while loading. When you pick up the front the rear slides. The rubber keeps it from sliding out on you and protects the plastic from the concrete or ground.
  5. I cant get my mini to work, it makes no noise. If I turn it on should it make a noise I can hear or is it something the human ear cant pick up?
  6. I used a fold out arm on one of my older yaks and found it worked well, just fyi, I also used the 4" rail with T bolts that yakattack markets
  7. I rolled mine for the first time while fishing this last year. My spine is not as loose as it once was. I was twisting around to reach back into my crate and couldnt quite reach . I reached further and apparently leaned over too much and rolled in slow motion. Oh well.
  8. another method for leashes is to re-use coiled cell phone charge cords and the like. Get a couple of clips of some sort and a crush clamp and you are set
  9. putting a round hole is usually not a problem and can be dealt with. The other possibility is to use a different FF to solve this problem.
  10. lighter weight and sleeker in the water. The center hatch also rotates and has two sides to it. Little things that add up. BUT, I didnt swing the extra dough either. They are nice tho. About $1000-1200 used.
  11. here in CA you can get a used T13 for $600-700 but it will sell in a day at that price. The more modern fancier model by OK is the Ultra 4.3
  12. I too think the 12-13' is the right all around size. The seat is a big consideration for all day comfort. You have to decide if you are going to commit and get a name brand quality yak or a chain store mid-range yak. The cheaper ones will be lighter, but wont have the little things worked out as well. You can find a used quality yak for the same as a mid-range new. Often the used will have rod holders, PFD, etc included. I use the Lowrance Mark 4 blk n wht FF. AMAZING clarity/resolution for a small FF. It has gps as well. I can easily see my jigs go down n bounce up n down whill vertical fishing.
  13. the original Big game was a slow, ill handling rig. Dont know anyone with the new one. I too have the T13 and love it. Just a good split on size n speed. My only two negatives would be not having a modern web style seat and it is getting heavy for my old self with bad shoulders and to load it up on my truck roof rack. I would try n paddle a couple of models before you buy. The 12-13' are good all around sizes. Im considering the Old Town Predator. It is owned ny the same company as OK, Johnson. The hull bottom is gonna be the deciding factor in which one paddles better.
  14. Im not up on them,,,anyone know if they are designed it to fit a certain brand? For instance Ocean Kayak is owned by the same company that makes Humminbird, so guess which one it easilty fits that brand.
  15. Wayne is right. The scupper mount is a set of caps for top n bottom of the scupper hole, a plastic long threaded rod to go thru the scupper to connect each end cap. There are other misc pieces as well. I used one to mount up my transducer and it worked well.
  16. which yak do you have? Some brands fit some yaks better then others. I used a Lowrance Mark 4 b&w that has amazing clarity and resolution with gps built in on my Ocean Kayak T13.
  17. Predator is one to look at too. Also isn't Jackson kayaks out your way?
  18. since its a part time thing I would look for a cheap one as long as it has a real seat...maybe thats not possible tho with a cheap one. In my area I see lots of the Dicks or other cheaper ones often for 200-400 used.
  19. salt n pepper hula grubs on a football head. Squaw cove next to the Madera side launch or up river. Most are spots.
  20. As far as sizing goes when you go to buy it and maybe cant try it on first, Im 205lbs and 5-9. I wear a lg size. It is snug. An XL is just too loose and rides up.
  21. another thing that goes along with a yak being designed to stand is a flat foot area that accomodates standing. Compare that area to a yak not designed for standing and that should tell you if it is gonna do what you want...along with a wider hull-maybe only a couple of inches-will do it
  22. Well just as you think it has LITERALLY nothing to do with it, I believe it does. Its about balance, and if the yak isnt a stable type of yak then its a similar concept, hence the skateboard analogy, just as surfing is also about balance and similar.
  23. NRS brand is a good PFD. Some have half backs, others full backs. If you have a low seat then either works. If you have a high seat a half back style may not be as comfortable for you. A fishing PFD will have larger pockets on the front and holders for pliers n such. BUT, the more you put in those pockets they then stick out to the front further and this makes it harder to get back in after a swim...guess how I know
  24. have not seen this one. Generally you will need a wider yak to stand in and the strap helps pull yourself up. Also younger more agile folks, like the ones riding skate boards, will find it easy. So, compare specs to others and see if it is a wide body yak. The Old Town Predator is a fairly new known stand up capable yak to compare to.
