Not For The Weak Of Mind
If I understand correctly, you are saying that if you know the reaction level required to get a response at any given time, you can then select a lure with that score. I think the idea has merit. Specific fishing conditions, (time of year, water temp. and clarity, etc.) according to conventional wisdom, call for lures that would fall within a fairly tight range on your index. You could then say under these conditions a lure within this range, 10-14 for example, would be a good place to start. As RoLo said, quantifying the stimulus of any lure, as well as determining the number needed to produce a strike is the real challenge. I like the idea, and think you could build a fishing "system" on it. Keep at it and I'll look for your book when it hits the presses. Maybe you could cut a deal with Glenn to market it here?

Muddy_man I don't think any real Cardinal fans are down on Carpenter. :-? Last nights game was an example of how a great pitcher responds when things start bad. He kept it together and completely shut down the Padres for 6 innings. It didn't hurt that we scored two in the first ot tie things up, but Carpenter is an ace, and we would not have made the post-season without him. : Not to mention he has two of our three wins. It looks like our hitting is starting to come around. We are better off without Rolen in the lineup right now, and if Edmunds can contribute we will give you guys a good series.

Muddy_man, congratulations on a great series. We'll see you in St. Louis later in the week (I HOPE). Detroit looks like a team on a mission-they will be hard to beat. Riskkid, once agan we see that the best team on paper does not always win. At least when a Yankees fan says there's always next year they are probably right.

Good article. I agree that going into post-season the Yankees look like the team to beat. We Cardinal fans know very well that being the "team to beat" does not get it done. On paper we should have won in 85 and 87, but could not close the deal. I don't have a clue what to expect from the Cardinals. When we play well, we can beat anybody-other times we just phone it in. It should be fun to see what happens. PLAY BALL! 8-)

Albert and the Mooks, and Heimlich instructions-funny stuff guys :-or a least it would be if it wasn't so painful to watch. :-[ I know Rolen homered last night, but he waived at a ball that allowed for a big inning early in the game. He is one of the best third basemen I've seen, but the whole team just seems to have quit. I guess it comes down to pitching-when the pitching is poor it effects everything else. :-? I know we still have a chance of post-season play, but it seems unlikely, and our chances of beating anyone there are not very good. OK, I feel better now. GO BIRDS ;D

GMAN If they don't stop the bleeding soon, they will have the entire off-season to find one.

LH or RH?
Frank19 If you run a search of this topic you'll find it comes up often. I believe it really just comes down to personal choice. Try both and buy what works best for you.

We don't need Izzy to give up 9th inning runs. Without solid pitching even Pujols isn't enough.

Muddy Rootbeer works for me. GMAN, I don't drink either. Geting together would be a good time though. I just hope the Cards and Mets get together in NLCS and not in the divisional play-off. As I understand it, if both the Padres and Dodgers (or whoever wins the wild card) finish with a better record than the Cards, the Mets and birds will play in the first round. I think our chances of beating one of the west teams are better than beating ya'll. :-? I just checked the standings and realize the Phillies are still very much in the hunt. We'd better keep winning. It looks like we won't have Izzy to blame for the rest of the way. That's probably a good thing.

Breaking concentration
I agree with kiethscatch regarding conversation. I don't mind talking or listening, and I don't mind going for hours without talking at all. The comfortable comraderie of a regular fishing partner is part of the joy of fishing for me. Where I have trouble is like a few others; not getting bit. Keeping my focus for hours between bites is a real challenge. This has caused me much grief over the years. Fishing all day (or night) for one or two bites, and then missing the fish due to lack of attention is enough to make a guy consider taking up golf. :-/ I really admire the guys like Fish Chris, who can fish for one bite day after day. It takes more focus and discipline than I have.

I sure hope the "birb feeders" will be needed. I don't have a warm feeling with our pitching at this time. :-/

Starting to feel a bit torn... What would you do?
I have only caught the hybrids (up to 8 #), but an 8# hybrid striper on light line, in open water is a VERY good time. I have not had the pleasure of catching a monster bass, but suspect that would be a good time as well. Good luck.

Ref. hiring a guide

Fishing Guides worth it?
This is a very interesting discussion, esp. getting the guides point of view. I have only been on a couple of guided trips and both of them were great experiences that I will never forget, and were well worth the money. One of those trips was an off-shore charter, where my wife and I fished with 6 other folks. The captain positioned the boat and the 2 mates did the work of keeping everyone fishing. An interesting thing happened on this trip that I think is relevent to this conversation. We began the day fishing for Amberjack. Each fisherman was allowed to keep one-I think this is the legal limit. We fished 4 at a time and everyone caught 1 except my wife. After she had missed a couple the captain was grumbling about her missing fish. He wanted to be able to tell all his buddies and prospective customers that we had caught our limit. I understood his point, but reminded him that she was doing her best and as far as I was concerned we had payed for the experience and not to increase his marketability. Ann ended up catching more fish than the rest of us and the crew could not have been better. It was a great trip, the captain turned out to be a nice guy, and I learned that numbers and size are sometimes more important to the guide than the customer. I believe if you have the cash a guide can be a great way of learning-esp. a specific boby of water. I think knowing exactly what to expect is a key part of enjoying the trip.

Maybe he could contact the Mets staff for the proper use of these items?

Has this site helped you?
My fishing has been very limited for the last several months due to health problems, but over that same time I have learned much about bass fishing and found a place to enjoy the fellowship that is for me, so much a part of the sport. Talking about tackle, techniques, and the experiences of fishing is a large part of the joy of fishing IMHO, and we can do that here in a comfortable setting. As Avid said it is the "knowledge, sharing, comraderie, humor, and vigilance" that I find here that makes visiting this site a daily occurrence. Thank you all.

muddy Ozzie will never make my list of Cardinal greats for the same the same reasons JETER is your best player. Jeter is an incredible player and a real leader on the field and in the clubhouse. Ozzie was never a leader in our clubhouse. IMO he was a devisive presence and was more concerned with his own agenda than the good of the team. The fact that he refuses to take part in official Cardinal activities is a testimony to his ego. Just ranting a little :
