  1. I question your sample size. There have been a lot of canoes purchased and fished from the last 50+ years that are still in use today. oe
  2. I'm smiling to myself after reading of your problem and remembering one fishing trip in my younger days where a mighty hook-set leaning on a freshly greased bow pedestal seat sent me ass-over-tea-kettle to the back of my boat! oe
  3. Buy yourself a 6'1/2" med. - mh spinning outfit. oe
  4. I won't use a loop knot, but choose a split ring instead. I don't want to use a knot that encourages abrasion of the line. oe
  5. or we could ask an elite pro... (just poking at you) oe
  6. Make the loop of your palomar knot large enough that you can reach through the knot with your hand, grasp the lure and it's treble hooks in your hand, bring your hand grasping the lure back through the loop and tighten the knot using only the main line not the tag end. Use this technique with PE lines, not fluoro or nylon lines. oe
  7. Much has been written about Lucky Craft lures and many bass anglers have developed a great deal of confidence fishing them. oe
  8. If you're trying to cast that far, you must be trying to hook something that far away. I'd rather be fishing with a PE line if I need a strong hook-set at a far distance. oe
  9. Thanks for the quick response. I've already flushed the spool bearings and that did improve distance significantly. In my hands smoothness during the retrieve is over rated. I prefer to feel the reel working... SLIGHTLY. I'm going to like this Chronarch very much after I spend more time with it. Thanks again. oe
  10. Considering the sizable Shimano congregation residing on this board... does anyone have personal experience improving casting distance with a Curado or Chronarch by removing the anti-reverse pawl? Anyone find problems arose after the pawl was removed? Thanks oe
  11. I'm in favor of barbless fishing 100% of the time, including tournaments. It adds to the challenge. oe
  12. The Chronarch itself is new and seems to be a very nice reel that I'm expecting to be happy with. The spool bearings were pretty packed with reel grease restricting the spool spin. It took several 8 minute baths in my ultra-sonic cleaner with Simple Green and finally a bath in acetone to get a good free spin on a pencil tip! After the cleaning the bearings sounded a little rough compared to the Morrum bearings I'm used to. This is my first Shimano so I don't have any experience with their bearings, but I'm coming to the conclusion that the Morrum stock bearings are a little better than the Chronarch stock bearings. The intention for this reel is casting hard jerkbaits that I'm needing to throw a good distance as the water is very, very, very clear. I'm comparing the casting distance to an older (10yrs +) Morrum with stock bearings... same bait, same line, using a better casting rod with the Chronarch. I'm not looking for distance records, just approximately the same distance as the Morrum. I'm not interested in either the noise or the expense of ceramics but am curious whether or not the ABEC 5 steel bearings from Boca might give me the improved performance I'm seeking. Thanks for your input. oe
  13. Are the Boca econo bearings (steel ball/steel races) an upgrade to the stock spool bearings in a Chronarch or just a replacement of the same bearing? After cleaning and lubing with TSI 321, I'm disappointed with the casting distance I'm achieving with a new Chronarch 51e when compared to my decade old Morroms with their stock bearings. oe
  14. no such thing as wasting time on the water! oe
  15. About a decade ago I fished with Damyl Tectan, my current Sensation reminds me of that line. oe
  16. Try speaking to a Clint Norris at Lews. Capt. Bob... just how long are your minuets? oe
  17. Not much discussion about Trilene Sensation that I could find in the archive. This is the second season I've been using a spool of 10lb as leader material with PE main lines and am coming to the conclusion I may like it for that purpose better than fluoro. Appears to have less stretch and a thinner diameter than similarly rated fluoro lines, and I haven't had any abrasion problems with it. This isn't a new line so there must be others who have taken it through its paces. Any other opinions... contrary or in agreement. oe
  18. Did a little comparison shopping for a new reel this past winter. Hadn't purchased a new casting reel since a couple Morrums a decade ago. Found the sweet spot for weekend warrior reels to be $150 - $200. The $200 price became necessary to find a quality reel that would effortlessly throw 1/4oz weights. Several very good choices from most of the major manufactures. Take some time, study the features and enjoy the shopping. oe
  19. If you're having trouble snagging the front hook, cut off the leading bend/point of the front treble. (This is more effective with lip-less cranks than lipped cranks.) oe
  20. Only a few years ago the Avid was the "cat's meow"... there was G. Loomis (if you could afford it) then a St. Croix Avid. I guess times change... oe
  21. What are the reasons you're disillusioned with fluoro leaders? oe
  22. I like that phrase... oe
  23. Most common brand names of the materials used in braided fishing lines are Spectra and Dyneema. Both of these brands are polyethylene (PE). I use the acronym PE to include not only lines that are physically "braided" but also to include lines that are fused, twisted, atomically aligned or any other way a polyethylene line can be manufactured. oe
  24. My first guess is Yankee hands must be tougher than... My second guess is you don't need to be tightening your knots as tight as you're trying to tighten them. oe
