  1. My fishing buddy is notorious for gut hooking fish. I dont think he understands the concept of setting the hook. I try telling him as soon as he feel the tap to set it but time after time i see him get a thump and not do anything for a second or two then just start reeling, giving the fish that extra second the swallow it deeper. Everyone on here has told me to use barbless hooks. Bought a pack last night and are gonna try em tomorrow. IF they are hooked deep and you can see the barb bend it down with pliers and it should slide out. Or cut it at the bend with wire cutters and remove the pieces.
  2. Ive got a good one. One day me and a buddy went smallmouth fishing at Neshaminy Creek. On the way I was telling him how id like to try some Live Target cranks cause they actually look like fish but theyre really expensive. Well as im fishing a plastic worm on the bottom when i get snagged, i pulled and pulled and finally it popped free, as im reeling it back in i noticed it felt weird coming in, well when i got it in there was a brand spankin new Live Target Bluegill. Must have just been lost cause there was zero rust and the finish was new and shiny. Couldnt believe it. What are the odds? lol
  3. @Justin, I fished a buzzbait, spinnerbait and worm for about half an hour each. The lake i fish is a small quarry lake about 10-15 acres with a good population of 3-5 pound fish. Its very deep and the banks only go out about 20 feet or so before dropping off to deep water. The shoreline is riddled with overhanging trees, logs and fallen trees in the water on the bank, great cover. Im on the bank, my usual spot is a small flat with a point next to it with deeper water on either side and some trees and logs in about 4 feet of water. The wind was blowing hard directly towards the bank i was on which i thought would push baitfish and the bass toweard me. I worked the spinnerbait on the bottom, in the middle and just under the surface. Worms i worked in a yoyo type motion lifting my rodtip 3 feet then letting fall to the bottom. How well can a bass see a worm in pitch black under water? Or cant they? Do they just use their lateral line for hunting at night? Its a semi clear water lake with visibility at about 2-5 feet. Forage wise there is Yellow Perch, White Perch, Bluegill, Sunnies. Not sure if there are any crawdads or shad, ive never seen them. There is also huge carp and Crappie in the lake. Not much vegetation, the only kind ive seen is some algea on my lures when working bottom in certain areas. Also, last night there was no moon, not sure if that has an effect. The tough thing last night with the wind was i couldnt see or hear my buzzbait, so it was tough keeping it right on top. Any other tips you could give with this info ive given? @ Blue, a chatterbait is that lure that looks like a jig with a big blade in front right? Ive never tried one but i plan on buying a few tomorrow, also gonna get a few Jittebugs to work on top.
  4. Went out to fish at night last night and tonight and got skunked both times. Both nights were about 85 degrees. Tonight was quite windy. Fishing the quarry lake. I threw big colorado blade spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, Both black and white. Big 9 inch ribbontail worms, some shallow and medium diving cranks. Went both nights around 9 and fished until about 1130- midnight. Any suggestions? Am i too early?
  5. In clear water go with natural colors, green and brown. In stained water go with dark or bright colors, Black, blue, purple, chartruese.
  6. Fish very early in low light. Fish will be busting the surface, if they are, throw that frog. I fish a quarry lake with only logs and fallen trees for shoreline cover, no veg, no lilles. When im there at like 5am and i see fish busting the surface i immediately tie on a frog and slay them. Cast it, let the ripples fully go away and start a stop and go retrieve. I like 3-4 twitches or walks and then stop until the ripples go away again. Open water frogging rocks! Great article in a recent Bassmaster with Dean Rojas. It opened my eyes to open water froggin.
  7. Yesterday me and my buddy has a great day at the quarry lake. WE caught 5 fish each in a few hours, all between 1.5-3 pounds. My buddy for some reason ALWAYS hooks fish deep. We use VMC offset shank worm hooks 2/0 to 3/0. I never hook em deep, alwasy in the side of the mouth. I guess he just has a delayed reaction to hooksets or something. Anyways he hooked one deep and we spent a little too much time trying to get it out and the fish died. Am i really better off leaving a 3/0 hook right in its throat? Theyre alwasy hooked right before the hole of their gullet. The really fleshy part. I told him maybe he should try barbless hooks, those barbs in soft flesh make it impossible to get out. Tried flattening it out before pulling it out but it wasnt working. IS leaving that hook right there in the way of its throat a death sentence? Cause being out of water for 5 minutes and yanking and pulling a hook out of its throat certainly was. I dont have this problem, i rarely hook em deep. Any advice? Barbless hooks? Leave the hook in? Thankfully it was only a 1 pounder and that lake is full of em so no biggie.
  8. If you can see them then they can see and feel you. Always, always wear dull colors. I strictly wear green and brown when bank fishing.
  9. I meant tons and tons of shoreline cover.
  10. Today me and my buddy went to our local quarry lake where weve been having great success this year. After this whole week of 100 degree days we figured since today was supposed to rain and only be in the 70's it would be a good day. We got there and it was drizzling all day long. Water was clear and about 75 degrees or so. Overcast obviously. We couldnt buy a bite. We threw, texas rigged plastic worms and creatures, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, deep, medium and shallow cranks, lipless cranks, literally everything in my tackle bag was thrown and not a single bite. We even tried different worms, paddle tails, ribbon tails, Senkos and even the old Creme nightcrawler with the hooks already in it. It was depressing. 7 hours and not a bite. The lake isnt big and we walked around all 4 sides. This quarry lake is very deep, the bank goes out maybe 6-7 feet then just drops off into darkness. There is tons and tons of shoreline coves, fallen logs and trees, old wooden pallets, and some big boulders. Anything I could have done differently? What would you have thrown? Is a day like today where its 70 degrees and rainy after a week of heat just not a good day to fish? The cold front with the storm hadnt passed over us yet so i figured it was pre front and theyd be biting. I was dead wrong. We worked the water column top to bottom and shallow to deep. Any advice?
  11. I love how people know exactly how much a fish weighs before they even get it close to the boat or in their hands on a scale.
  12. Why would you make another hole for the scale? Just slide the hook up under its gill and make sure its through. No hole.
  13. Tell your friends to eat it. Theyre just JEALOUS! If its a body of water and has fish in then fish that joint man!
  14. If youre not losing baits, youre not throwing them where the fish live. Its all part of the game. I use some weedless hooks, but remember theres a big difference between weedless and snagless.
  15. My biggest this year was 6-8. She came off a sunken boat in one of those coves. Caught her on a Havoc Boyd Duckett Juice Worm. Love them things! @Multi, thats why i always have my ultra light rod with me, in case i get skuned on bass i can always tie on a small grub and catch tons of bluegills and crappie. Ive been having a killer year, even with the heat. And its only my 2nd year bass fishing! Thanks to this site for making me a much better fisherman in a short time.
  16. The inspiration for this came today while i was fishing a cove off of Neshaminy Creek. I was walking the banks and say a log sticking out of the water about 15 feet out and in about 7 feet of water. I stayed back and made a long cast with my Yum Dinger. As soon as it hit the water boom, nice 3 pounder. Next cast to the log, boom, another nice 3 pounder. 3rd cast to the log, BOOM, a husky 4 pounder. They were stacked up on that log like theres no tomorrow.
  17. A huge lake, a massive river, but you have found one log on the bank. Miles and miles of shoreline but this one stump is all you need. You know she is there, waiting for prey to pounce on. You flip your jig to the log, it barely makes a ripple in the water as it enters and slides down the stump. Out of the darkness you see her face, she sizes up your jig and inhales it. You rear back with all your might and set the hook, the fight is on. She zigs this way, zags that way, heaves herself from the water trying to spit your hook, but she cant. She gets close and you reach down, grab her by the lip and lift her into the boat. In that moment we become one with the wild, we are the predator, and she has become the prey. You lower her back into the water, making sure she has recovered and is ready and she slides from your hand back into the depths. Nothing better in the world.
  18. When its super hot out I like to go to coves in rivers during low tide. The fish will be very tight to cover, and log or stump will hold fish. But also remember, BIG FISH FEED MID DAY!
  19. Me and a buddy are looking to join a local bass club. We dont own a boat so we would be fishing as non boaters or co anglers. Doesnt have to be like the BASS Federation Nation or anything. Just a local club so we can get the feel of competing and being in the back of the boat. Not to mention the amount of knowledge and experience we will gain. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
  20. He lived quite a long life. Good for him. He's now casting to that big stump in the sky. Lol
  21. We lost a great man and fisherman today guys. Just this week i found and watched Homer and Glenns movie, BIGMOUTH. Even something made so long ago has changed my mentality and approach to bass fishing. And the amount of tips i've learned from ask uncle homer has been immense. Lets all catch a bass this week for Homer.
  22. Also, we are getting showers and thunderstorm tonight and some after midnight.
  23. So we just had a heat wave this week in the northeast. Temps were almost 100 for 3 straight days. Going to the quarry lake tomorrow morning early. Hoping to get there before sun up. Any tips on catching bass after a major heat wave? Tomorrow is going to be sunny, highs in the upper 80's. Northwest winds 10-15mph. The quarry is a small deep, clear water lake. Lots of logs and trees strewn along the bank. Ill probably be on the bank, bot sure if were taking the boat out. Im planning on starting with a big old Havoc Ribbon Tail worm on my spinning rod. On my baitcasters im gonna have ablack and blue jig on one and a deep diving crank on the other. Any other useful tips? Im sure the fish will be tight to cover. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.
  24. Although I will say that Lunkerville is awesome and probably the realest show on that channel. Mike D. is the man, hes humble and down to earth. And he fishes with regular Joes. Sometimes they dont even catch fish. I doubt youll ever see Dave Mercer or JP DeRose never catch fish. lol
  25. Like what was just said, WFN is Canadian and bass fishing isnt the majority there by a long shot. I prefer bass fishing but I honestly would rather have a variety of fishing shows (fly, salt, fresh) than watch the same guys, say the same stuff over and over and catch 2-4 pound bass all day. It gets boring. Even shows like Big Bass Tour, its all mostly 4 pound fish. I thought it was called BIG BASS TOUR? lol. And i agree with Charlie, Im taking an interest in fly fishing and those guys on WFN are very pompous and full of themselves but the way some of the bass guys act is just sad. Like dude, its a 3 pound fish, relax. I forget the one guy, i think its Facts of Fishing , Mercer? Giggles like a girl on every fish, its incredibly annoying.
