This is a common occurrence with many reels, if you are having to pull harder than you like to remove the gear, try using an emery board or wire brush to clean the ridges that are holding the gear from sliding up the shaft.

I would not accept the shims as a permanent solution, I would ask for a refund or replacement of the rods as defective, no reason the two should not work together.

I say no, there is no rod that I currently know of that is going to allow you to cast finesse baits one minute then turn around and cast frogs in heavy slop, think of rods as a set of golf clubs, could you play nine holes with a putter only, could you play a round with only a five iron? There are multiple powers and actions so that you can perform better at job at hand, like a driver on the tee box and a putter on the green. If you are limited to one rod only then pick a few techniques that the rod supports well and fish them until you know them inside and out, or until you can afford to purchase another rod that is more suited to other techniques. Fishing is meant to be enjoyable, I can see no way for it to be that trying to fish techniques on a rod that is ill equiped.

Did you get an answer to why your reel would not open properly? What was the solution?

A.B.A. is at Milford in the morning, probably not a bunch of boats but something to consider none the less.

AGM is a lead acid battery, instead of being flooded with electrolyte fluid they are filled with absorbant glass mat, in theory this keeps the checmical closer to the plates and lets them charge and discharge better, they handle vibration a little better , hold a charge if not used daily a little better and often handle more recharge discharge cycles over standard flooded batteries. Some AGM batteries require a special charge cycle, so be sure your charger is capable of performing correctly with this type of battery. There is a lot of good information on these batteries out there so they are easy to research, I just bought new batteries for my boat and some of the info is still in my head.

This is my best guess as to what happened but of course I was not there. When you pressed the thumb lever to disengage the spool you did not get it completely depressed, the screeching you heard was the pinon gear bouncing and rubbing against the pin in the spool shaft until the spool slowed enough for the pinion to re engage. I have never seen a bearing "blow out" on any reel. I have never seen a bearing on a reel go from being fine 1 cast to screeching loudly on the next, and if that did happen to be the cause of the noise you most certainly would not have gained in casting distance. I think it is a safe bet that your bearings are fine. Most of time when someone complains of a whooshing noise, I ask them to take a look at the line on their spool, sometimes a small lose loop of line will be there and it will rub the frame during the cast and you will hear the noise you are describing. As I mentioned I was not there and have not seen the reel, this is just my thoughts on the information that you have posted. Hope you get it figured out or a reel that makes you happy, If you decide to get rid of the Winch let me know, I use them in my fishing and find them to be a very good reel.

Try the Jackall Iobee frog,

Interesting, almost nothing is moving in that side of the reel during the cast. Because the Revo Winch uses a single piece spool shaft it does pass through the pinion, and into the bearing under the tension cap, the spool shaft also rubs on the disks in the end of the tension cap. Might try removing the spool and wiping the shaft down with a clean towel, I would also remove the tension cap and give it a good look over.

Try fishing your frog with a good quality braided line in about 50-60lb test, I think you will be amazed at how much easier it will make it to walk.

I use the Jackall Iobee frog, walks like a dream, durable material, good hooks, and you don't have to do any modification to the bait to get good hookup ratio or to make it walk correctly. I like the bluegill color pattern.

I was never a fan of the D series, they just were not a comfortable reel to fish with IMHO.

Acetone is safe for a majority of plastics and synthetic fibers, it is also a much better degreaser than isopropyl alcohol. I certainly would not recommend soaking plastic or synthetic parts in acetone, but in my experience it has never been a problem with the simple cleaning of plastics. I do not use acetone currently but have in the past with no ill effects. I currently use a product called safety clean which is also a great degreaser. Ironically, one of the methods for producing acetone is by using isopropyl alcohol. You can do a simple internet search and verify any of the statements I have made here. I always use a very thin coat of oil on the brake race once I finish cleaning, I have found that after cleaning the brake hub and tabs with a degreaser, they tend to be dry, without a light coat of oil they can at times produce chatter and the light coat of oil eliminates this. This image is from the Shimano website, it is under their maintenance section. In fairness they also recommend using alcohol to clean the tabs with, so use whatever makes you comfortable.

Take a little acetone on a q-tip and clean the brake hub with it, once it dries, take another q-tip with 1 drop of very thin oil on it and run it around the brake hub a couple of times. Should do the trick.

Nonsense huh? Here is a picture of 4 different Roboworms, both 4 1/2" and 6" and not one of them float. Not even a little bit, they sink to the bottom like a rock without the slightest indication that they will ever float. I suggest you pull some out of the bag and try them yourself before you make posts like this. ]

I have the XDs .45. It is a single stack 5 round stock 7 round with the extended mag. Have not had any FTF or FTE even shooting cheaper rounds. It does a low bore axis like a Glock and will pinch you between tthe thumb and forefinger if you have bigger hands. and do not take care to grip properly. IMO it is another quality product from Springfield.

Shakey head is often thought of a finesse technique, very light line, small jig heads 1/8 -3/16 oz and smaller baits 4.5 to 6.0" worms and other smaller, thinner baits. The shakey head is often fished in more of an open water setting, not much grass, not much wood, you get the idea. T-rigged plastics can be most anything, but often they are larger worms 7.5-12" or beaver/craw style baits fished with heavier line often braid or FC, heavier bullet weights 1/4 to 1 oz and on up. The T-rig is a throw it the middle of some trash, wood, rock, weeds, grass whatever is there and drag em out.. The weights on the T-rig can be pegged or not, just depends on the fishing situation. All of this IMO.
