  1. i'm not disputing that simcoe has 7lbs i know it does.. i'm just saying common to me would mean every 3 or 4 trips you catch one.. anyways.... do you live near simcoe?? if so i'm jealous i have only 2 lakes within 4 hours of me that are worth their salt for smallmouth and your not even allowed putting a boat in one of them
  2. great point..... there is about a 1.5 mile stretch of the juniata river.. i wont give away its exact location but between lewistown and mifflintown... that is very slow deep water.... down to about 25 ft which for this river is extremely deep, and fish stack up in it every winter.. i know they come from miles away to overwinter in this spot.. i've fished the river since i was a small child and during the winter i can float for 6 or 7 miles without a bite and all of the sudden in this stretch there are smallies stacked thick its the craziest thing i've ever witnessed... i discovered it for the first time about 4 years ago with a friend we only caught about 5 fish that day but all were over 3 lbs with 2 of them around 5. its deep slow and for the most part a mixture of mud and the occosional large boulder. i know fish can be caught elsewhere in the river during the winter but in my opinion if there is access to slow and deep water in the river it is without a doubt what a smallie prefers.
  3. the company i work for "jarden" owns abu garcia... some of the reels are assembled in korea but i can promise you the parts and peices that go into them are not made in korea
  4. the new extreme reels for 2012 look an awful lot like a pflueger to me.. i dont know anything about who makes them i'm just pointing out it looks like they are a straight copy of some of the pfluegar baitcasters.... also i have several bps reels and they all seem very good.. pro qualifiers and extremes. maybe not as nice as some of my revo's but they are as good as anything else for the money and i definitely abuse them so they seem to be good reels in my opinion.. can't speak for the rods i have none but i do have some of the feild and stream tec spec's from dicks and they are very good rods for the money.. and i was told by a dicks employee the tec specs are made by quantum and are the same blank used in the kvd signature series
  5. just wanted to say theres a good chance your killing fish when you lay them on the ground. they might live a few days and seem fine when you release them but it does something to their slime and they will get parasites or something and die... i used to do it all the time myself so don't think i'm trying to preach to you but i read about it in several places and it seems your putting the fish at a great risk of skin infection if you lay them on the ground . sometimes you have no choice and i understand but i'm just letting you know.. again i did it for years myself so don't think i'm trying to be rude i'm just passing on the info.
  6. There is a lake in central PA where the fish commision stocks fingerling brown trout every year.. i have never once saw a trout in this lake.. it also contains rainbow smelt and yellow perch. i have caught about 15 smallies over 5lbs in this lake... your not allowed boats there and your not allowed in the lower half of the lake, its a water supply resorvoir in the mountains... it kinda seems like my own personal playground no one ever goes there and anytime i talk about it people say "oh i didn't know you could fish there"
  7. is that the snotty looking stuff ? that has gotton bad in glendale the past two years... i never knew what it was called its like green snot
  8. go to www.pondboss.com and get in their forum.. you can learn so much about pond fishing and pond management just from reading on the website. if most of the fish you catch around around the same size and skinny then that pond is either overpopulated with bass or under populated with forage.. or both. very common in small ponds that arent being actively managed by their owner. a good indicator would be if you look around the pond and find it common to see bass jumping out of the water after dragon flies.. they do that anywhere in any lake but they do that very frequently in a pond that does not have enough forage fish
  9. yes i have actually.. and 25lbs usually wins one day tourneys there.. sometimes up to 30... that still does not mean 7lbers are common... if you are saying 1 fish out of 150 fish is common then yes your right but its not like your going to falcon lake in texas you still can't expect to catch a 7 everytime
  10. i've fished the j since i was 3 years old. up untill about 8 years ago you would have to try not to catch 40 or 50 everytime you go.. now the greatest day i've had in years was 23 fish... The juniata and the susquehanna are shadows of their former selves but are still great rivers. can't beat a dark green or brown tube. black jitterbugs at night.. sometimes you can catch them all day on a small 1/4 purple buzzbait. if you do livebait hellgremites and stone cats(small 3 to 4 inch catfish) work wonders. just use the typical river smallie lures and you'll catch some fish... during late fall and winter there are some stretches of slow deep water that fish will come from miles around to overwinter in if you find one of these magical spots you can catch a ton of 4 or 5 lb smallies
  11. agree completly .. if you dont mind the price nothing compares to a vision 110 . i also like excalibur jerkbaits as far as decent priced lures go excalibur would be my reccomendation
  12. i painted my old bass boat with rustoleum spray paint.. high gloss black... and people actually told me it looks great without me ever telling them how it was painted, they thought it was a professional job.. just make sure you buy tons of cans of clear coat... you can paint on the cheap you just have to spray the clear coat on very thick and it should look good for at least 3 or 4 years before it chips.... much longer if you don't abuse it by smacking shore and rocks and such
  13. 400 dollars buys you a lowrance with down imaging.. anything with down imaging is going to be great for you and you can get one for 400... i think its 5 something if you want tthe same one in a colored version
  14. i've been rigging manns hardnose toads on a 3/0 weighted swimbait hook for years and just dragging them slow on the bottom... 3 of my 5 biggest bass ever were caught this way.... caught over 50 bass in 6 hours on the potomac doing this.. and it works great on the small lakes in pa most of them are loaded with frogs and they dont swim accross the top unless they are being chased so this is a much more realistic presentation than most traditional frogs... watch one when they get spooked and jump in the water.. they go straight to the bottom and swim along the bottom this mimics that perfectly

good idea... i've tryed them on a shaky head and caught some fish that way your idea seems about the same.. works great for someone who only fishes spinning rods.
  16. and they are very sensative to weight so if you want the new one to suspend paralell to the surface one suspenddot will make that happen for you or upsizing the front hook but i'm kinda afraid to hurt the action so i go with the suspendots.. only in winter though when the waters warm i dont care how they suspend....
  17. the straight eye is the old version.. not japanese, they are all japanese the only difference is some colors are only offered in japan but all 110's being produced now have down eyes and all the old ones have straight.. regardless of japan or us version... anyways... i have personally never used the straigt eye but i love the down eye ones... but the fact people are paying over 100 dollars on e-bay for the straight eye version they must be at least somewhat different than the new ones. i'd like to try some of the older ones but i'm not paying more for one than i pay for a rod so hopefully i meet someone who lets me try one
  18. i wondered about these too.. i love the koppers and thought these looked similar but if you can't walk the dog with the frog its not worth 2 bucks as far as i'm concerned ... anyone been using them?
  19. little creepers trash fish. they swim perfect. they look perfect.. and they now make a small one for places like the northeast... look them up, there is nothing better for the money.... i've been a co-angler at some flw tour events and been at elite series events and these are being used far more than you'll ever hear about in the magazines
  20. fish in the juniata river will travel over 5 miles to find deep slow spots in the dead of winter
  21. there is no lake in the world besides erie where 7 lb smallies are not uncommon. your scale must be broke
