  1. I got that from an old timer after he saw me set the hook on a LMB and promptly pulled him out of the water, airborne, with one stroke. "might tight on the ole drag aren't you".... He told me you only need enough drag to dig the barb into the meat, then use your fingers as needed to control the fish. I've broken a lot less lines this way.
  2. How do I personally set my drag? OK, no one has said it yet, so I will....... With my fingers.... But really,,, It all depends on the reel (open face or bait caster) But genially somewhere around 3.14 LBS..... Just enough to set the hook, then I control the spool with my fingers.
  3. What type of boat do you have? Engine? I have two basic rules: 1. GO SLOW 2. Trim you motor all the way down so your keel is cutting through the chop. Five to six foot swells are big and something not to take lightly. I suggest you hug the lee shoreline as close as safely possible. Don't try to wave hop across the tops of the swells, that will get you and your boat hurt badly.
  4. Does the boat have an ID plate on the transom or some place on the hull?
  5. Here's a thought...... I was just out shopping at the Orange big box store, and as I was walking down the electrical isle it hit me, no, not an electrical shock, but........... we don't have a National Fish, or a National Sport fish ! Question 1: What would it take to start a movement to name the Bass as America's National Fish. Question 2: Does anyone know of a contiguous state that does not have Bass (of some type) in their rivers, streams or ponds? I don't know that our off-shore states have Bass. I'd like to do some research but could use some help; if you know the web page to your states Fisheries department, i.e. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/ , please PM it to me, I'd like to see if there is a state that does not have Bass. I'll look at the lower 48. If the data supports there are Bass in all of the lower 48 states, then we could go forward with a campaign to name the Bass as America's sport Fish...... One of us with artistic talents could come up with a Nation-wide campaign poster that we could email to all Congress members and Senate members, we could email to every state Governor, every state dept of fisheries, we could email everywhere......; someone could manage a petitions campaign, someone could manage a media campaign, etc. Then what state would have the balls to attack America's Fish...... OK, maybe Washington,,, but that's Wash-a-toe-ing-ons for ya. What's ya think?! I can see the headlines now - "Bass Resource Starts Drive To Name Fish"
  6. Posted the following, hope it helps _____________________________________________ "As a yearly visitor to Washington state (my son lives in Carnation) I am interested in its environmental issues. However, with this subject Washington appears to be publicly stating that they do not truly understand how to manage a sports-fishery, and/or they are content to kneel to lobbyist with special interest; or have a pre-paid agenda of their own. In either regard they are not using sound judgment based on scientific facts in their decision process. I would suggest you hold a round table with experts from across the country and listen to what they can offer on this subject." _____________________________________________ Salmon = Money.... and they need to have more salmon for 1st class passengers on airplanes. Glenn, is there something we as a club can do, or someone we can talk to, i.e. can BR ask B.A.S.S. for support to get the word out.
  7. That really sucks A-Jay, I hope it all works out for you.
  8. The middle Potomac river is loosing a fishing site on Monday Oct 1st. The warm water discharge will be no more. http://www.wtop.com/134/3060188/Alexandria-power-plant-to-be-close-for-good-Monday
  9. No she wont, she lives with me and she uses earplugs
  10. Ya, we have Snakeheads, but the rule is "you catch it - you keep it" there is no catch-and-release for Snakeheads. If you like, you can come down any Friday night after work, fish Sat & Sun, and then go home Sunday evening so your ready for work or school on Monday; EDIT: you don't have to wait for the M&G13; and I'm open during the week, cause I'm retired Same invite for Zoff, Nitro, Sam, & endless.
  11. I'm retired, so I'm easy, you pick the date; I have two spare rooms that can sleep two apiece ifin your real friendly. And my wife is always interested in meeting your better half's.
  12. You don't want me to call in those guy's, we'll never see you again So....... start making plans for the 2013 Road Trip
  13. Can someone shoot me a PM and teach me how to do multi quotes in one post, there is something about that process that I can't wrap my mind around.... EDIT: Thanks Nitro, I don't know why I was beating my head on a wall over trying to use that "Multiquote" button
  14. On the Mattawoman from the Potomac to the start of the 6 mph zone can get choppy with Bass boats running back-and-forth during tournaments (look at the photo I posted), but I fished it for years out of a heavily loaded 14' Jon with me and a buddy - we had people stop by to ask if we were sinking :0 Ed & i got the plans for our Jon boat from Harry & Charley at B.A.S.S. (anyone know what I'm talking about there????) Up in the 6 MPH zone it's glass smooth if there's no wind. They use to quarry sand and gravel up there so there are areas of holes and uneven S&G bottom back in the pads, some REALLY good spawning grounds. There's wood stick-ups, blow-downs, back-waters, etc. up there. I think you, Zoff & Sam need to come up for a Little recon before you put the Mattawoman/Potomac on your list.
  15. Don't know if you saw me slow rolling that spinner just under the surface like a buzzbait or not but I was creating a bubble trail that I thought should have landed something BTW, I keep a push pole on board just for those areas, I thought I would need it when Steve, AJ & I were up at the end of a creek - we were really kicking up some mud with the TM.
  16. I personnally would like to see a two day event (Sat & sun), but we need to go with the majority conscenus or we could loose people.
  17. Not for Jon or rowboats, but there is a place to rent yaks.A good portion of the creek/river is a 6 mph no wake zone. And there is a yak launcher at the Mattingly Ave ramp which is within the No Wake zone.I fished this creek for many years with only a 14' Jon with an electric troll and a 15 HP gas. A Jon or a yak can get back into the pads where a glass boats can't.
  18. No, I think he's just going on Kents looks
  19. I may have to kidnap Nitro in the dark of the night, I know people that just might help me too
  20. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Kent !! May you have many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, more!
  21. Ask Road Warrior about bank fishing at Guntherville during the 2012 Road Trip. He won largest fish of the week.
  22. I'm open for anything, but my take on the 2012 Va M&G is it was too short, I didn't have time to meet everyone and really chat or fish, Nitrofreak was the exception. But from what I did do, we had a really great bunch of guys & gals there, and I'd like to see them all again. As for fishing the Potomac, I'll offer to do any leg work necessary to make it a reality. Smallwood State Park has camping and cabins; and one of the best boat launches on the river, and is central to the middle Potomac and in easy reach of D.C. for glass boats. With that being said, Mattawoman and Smallwood also have a high activity level for locals and tournaments. Smallwood State Park is on the Mattawoman Creek, which is one of the best fisheries of the river and great for kyackers and small boats as well as larger boats. You can go up river or down and find fish.
  23. Here ya go.... Look all the way to the bottom of the info....... Per Maryland DNR @ http://dnr.maryland....license.asp#RCP Reciprocity Virginia saltwater recreational fishing licenses with a Maryland/Potomac River Fisheries Commission (PRFC) registration (I don't know what that means, so I'll call MD DNR to find out) honored in Maryland tidal waters are: Individual annual license Individual temporary (10-day) license Private boat license Charter boat and head boat licenses (covers all persons fishing on boat and a registration is not needed) Lifetime saltwater Recreational Fishing License Special Lifetime recreational Fishing License for the permanently and totally disabled Special Combined (FW/SW) Sportfish License Rental boat license (covers all persons fishing on boat). Maryland saltwater recreational fishing licenses with a Virginia registration honored in Virginia tidal saltwaters are: Annual resident Chesapeake Bay and Coastal sport fishing license Short-term (7-day) resident Chesapeake Bay and Coastal sport fishing license Annual nonresident Chesapeake Bay and Coast sport fishing license Short-term (7-day) nonresident Chesapeake Bay and Coastal sport fishing license Lifetime Chesapeake Bay and Coastal sport fishing license for former prisoners of war or 100% service connected disabled American veterans, Combination commercial/recreational (tidal fish license) Private boat license Consolidated senior sport fishing license. Charter boat and head boat licenses (covers all persons fishing on boat and a registration is not needed) Potomac River Fisheries Commission recreational fishing licenses honored in Virginia tidal saltwaters: Individual annual license Private boat license (covers all persons fishing on boat with a VA registration) Charter boat license (covers all persons fishing on boat) Potomac River Fisheries Commission recreational fishing licenses honored in Maryland tidal saltwaters: Individual annual license Private boat license (covers all persons with a Maryland/PRFC registration fishing on boat) Charter boat license (covers all persons fishing on boat) Maryland and Virginia saltwater recreational fishing licenses and their registrations are honored in the tidal saltwaters of the Potomac River. (EDIT by traveler: I believe this covers from Point lookout at the south end to just below Great Falls to the north end of the tidal river) So..... Lets fish the Potomac. EDIT by Traveler: See blue text above. Saltwater anglers who are not required to hold Maryland Bay & Coastal Sport Fishing license and want to fish the Chesapeake Bay and tidal Potomac River must obtain a free Maryland Saltwater Angler Registration. By registering with Maryland, you will not need to register with NOAA. Some of the anglers who are eligible for this free registration are guests on a boat with a Chesapeake Bay and Coastal Sport Boat Decal, waterfront property owner and their family members, have a Virginia saltwater license, have a Potomac River Fisheries sport fishing license and are fishing in a free fishing area or on a Maryland Free Fishing Day.
