Bearing Upgrade Help
Bantum1 is spot on, Mike may not be distracted by ceramics but I am, I personally think they are a waste, unless you are trying to throw 1/8 oz or less, and will gain very little then, or will never maintain a quality abec5 SS bearing with light oil be needed periodically, then you may want to get used to the lousy racket, most won't gain anything over a quality abec 5 SS. I agree with Bantum1 and always suggest abec 5 SS, I have ran orange seals from boca (abec7 ceramics) personally I hated them, I even tried them again in my team pro, I still hate them, and am running SS now. With a drop of oil it will relieve the sound a little, and I have to say I seen very little difference in performance with very light oil added, but with the drop of oil on each, it still was to much noise for my liking. As far as ABEC RATING, far to many get caught up in this, it is a loosely used term by most sellers and far to hard to prove they are selling what they say. Chances are if they are selling abec 7 or 9's and are the same price as a abec 5 from a well known reputable seller, they are probably 5's. If you can buy an abec 7 and "it is as true" as an abec 5 from boca for less money, then by all means go with them, but don't expect an abec 5 or 7 to make difference in the reel's performance, they only operate at enough rpm to benefit from an abec 5 bearing. And never use anything over an abec 5 in a spinning reel, as they turn very low rpm's and there is absolutely nothing to be gained. All this said, for all my customers I use only abec 5 SS bearings from Boca, unless they are determined to go with Orange Seals, most agree after making that choice, and would have been just as happy with abec 5 SS performance wise. I use Boca because I know every bearing I by from Boca I am getting what I ask for, and find there Abec 5 bearings to be a better bearing than most factory bearings. This doesn't mean that factories are not building with Abec 5 bearings, but I feel Boca's are higher quality......JMO

Power Pro?
Really,,,,I recall more than one post from you about being spooled and how many times a year do you refill,,,,,,,,I have not got one reel that has been respooled sooner than 3 years, but I know how to use a leader and do religiously. Regardless which you use every time you have a line cut and loose a fish or just a lure,,,,hands down in many test from machine to real life SUFIX 832 is proven rounder, for it's diameter stronger, and less abrasion resistant,,,,,quite possibly it may save some breakoofs, or getting spooled, and probably longer times between respooling, it has for me, and I am hard on line. As far as digging in others complain about, I also found 40# PP was about as light bas I could go on my heavier riggs that get a lot of pressure and I run the heavier drag pressure on, 30" 832 did much better and is smaller diameter in this case. As far as working for you, Trilene worked for me for years, but with all the braids out there, power pro is down my list a few spots, for the job it does I have found better options, but I am willing to pay a little more for better performance! On my finesse baitcaster I use 20# 832, on my general bass and Walleye baitcasters I run 30# strictly because of heavier drags and eliminating dig in, on one rig a Super Duty and a 7'6" HF I use 40#, I use this for flipping and pitching as well as buctail's for pike. On my spinning gear I run 10# on 1000 size reels, 15 on 2500 and 3000 size reels and 20 pound on my 4000 size reels. none have been respooled and I started changing them ALL OUT 2 years ago. I still havent tried the Diawa Braid but have heard others say great things, but have seen some test for abrasion resistance and it is more on par with other braids, but I have no hands on with it. I believe if you have never tried braid before, regardless what mono you are using now, you would be delighted if you try Power Pro, but I believe Sufix 832 is far superior line in every way we judge line,,,,,,just my observation,,,,,

Is Power Pro Super Slick 8 Worth The Extra Money Over Power Pro? And What Poundage Line For My Spinning Reels?
The 832 is the roundest braid made, and the toughest, everyone complains about braids abrasion resistance, try 832 and you won't believe a braid can be this tough, I won't buy PP again, and after one time using super slick was a deal breaker also when the stuff starts flaking off and offers no better abrasion resistance than regular.

Ar Dead?
Never grease, a Q-tip and very light oil is all you want to use, but grease and heavier oil is a no no.

What Is The Best Braid?

How Much Line Do You Put On Your Spinning Reels?
I would take split the 300 yard spool between both reels. I start by putting the 150 yards of braid on the spool, then fill with mono (in your case 6# test) to the reel manufacturers recommended filling point. Then take it off tie the mono on your spool and reel it back on, now you have the exact amount of line on your reel and when the end you are using starts to get some wear on it, you can reverse the braid at the mono, and have new line again using the unused end.

Is A 1000 Size Stradic Too Big For An Ultralight Rod?
I prefer the higher speed on this small a reel with the Stradic, the Biomaster is Slower, plus the warranty on the Biomaster is not recognized by Shimano America, the Stradic is, if it was ever needed??

Help With Shimano Sustain 2500 Fg
Your problem is probably a bearing, and if it is any bearing the line roller would not be what makes it hard to reel in spots, and only noticeable with weight on the end of the line, but would probably have been noticed getting noisier as it went bad before starting to freeze up. You would need to have it looked at to be sure, there are just to many things that would cause the reel to become hard to turn, some gears, shafts or bearings, possibly even a bushing or nylon sleeve, doubtful but friction ring maybe?? If you are not sure, a tech would need to check it, for this the factory is not nessacary as the reel is no longer under warranty, and most reel services are cheaper and better than factory. I know I don't use factory bearings when I put new bearings in a customers reel, there are usually better options, and have never been a fan of ARB bearings from shimano! The full set of Boca bearings is only around $70.00 for quality Stainless Steel and what most would I would recamend, but if you are not familiar with all the workings of the reel I would have a reel service do the work in case there are other issues beside bearings.

What Is The Best Braid?
I have not used the Diawa braid, but have most others 832 is the best I have found, and is the roundest line available, this line is the smoothest Braid running through the guides of your rod that is made today. It noisy when you have a load on it, but I kind of like the whine. The best thing about 832 Sufix is it's abrasion resistance, it is better than a lot of mono lines and far better than any other Braid. I used Fireline for years with it's flat shape and drag through the guides because of the ability to hold up on rocks and timber without abrasion problems. For me this is very important as gravel rocks and boulders are what I fish most times. I have a few places that slate and sharp rock is common, both these lines are the only synthetics I have found to take this kind of fishing without fraying and cutting frequently. This is real world proof, but there are more than one test you can find on line and unless these two lines aren't used, they always are the top lines when tested. Fireline Braid and Power Pro I would never again waste my money on and would never recamend it after using so many others, and in abrasion test never fair well, but they are appropriately priced as they are among the cheapest name brands you can find. Your problem is going to plague you with any braid, guides have to be good, and today most any rod from any reputable maker will have guides that will hold up to any braid, but dime store rods are not going to make many happy, for any purpose.

Why Isn't Quantum More Popular?
You are absoluetly correct Snookers, and absoluetly none of those reels have a thing to do with Quantum Bass reels and there popularity, just more useless examples grasping for something to gain popularity. your right aavery2, I knew this all along and probably why most shy away, Zebco is great at what it is made for, but with the retrieve speeds and drag potential, face it there are definitely better choices for bass and sportfishing than Zebco and why their not looked at when most go reel shopping for most sportfishing reels,,, I absolutely think when someone says there buying a Quantum the majority of people are thinking why?? not Van Staal!! Like I said above, Zebco does better at what it is designed to do, and van staal at what it does, but neither one one would be great for throwing and retrieving Bass lures all day, and believe me Bass fishing is what a reel has to do great today to get popular, if it isn't a good bass reel it, it isn't going to gain the popularity that name brand reels get that are great bass reels. I mainly Walleye fish, but top end bass gear is the best choice for my kind of equipment needs, even for Browns and Steelhead. When I am Perch or small Trout fishing I use finess Bass reels, This Van Stahl, Finn Nor, talk I doubt has ever come into any thought when one is looking for new Bass gear, and totally absent from there minds. You can buy Zebco's and talk about "has been" offshore reel's all you want, but I will put money on the fact that aint nobody lining up to trade their Shimano's, Diawa's, Lew's, Abu's or even Quantums for Zebco Fin Nor or Van Stahl, to go bass fishing,,,, more grasping to make their lack of popularity issues relavant, and it ain't happening. I wont even ask why so many quantums are in all reel techs junk pile, not just JFranhco's pile,,,,,,,,?

When You Find That Special Some One
Listen to K-Mac, I would never let a decision in my life this important be made on an open forum. I would find that person personally that is experienced with giving the right help to families in your position, and that usually isn't a lawyer either. I to will say a little prayer you find the right help for all involved.

High Speed Reels Only
High speed is a term used that can be very deceiving, 3.8 and 4:1 were called high speed 25 years ago today, I've had 6.4:1 with 28 IPT, the same reels at 7.1:1 had 31 IPT I am happy with 7.1:1 and find it or the 6.4:1 is no huge difference to me, but there are times I want slower and reach for a 5.4:1 at 23 IPT this is very noticeable and is a huge difference, but don't really want faster than the 7.1:1 for any application I use these reels for. Today what are you calling high speed??? It is nice we have so much today to offer everything "practically" for whatever anyone could want!

Baitcasting Reels Not Made In China?
At our age were just lucky to still be alive according to some here, I don't know how I made it this long with both of my vehicles being in on those recalls, I'm lucky so are you it sounds like Hootie, no apology needed and I was denying what you said or slamming anyone, just saying much is bu****** along with the legitimate. I apologize I ain't been there before,,,,, today we have a thousand times the vehicles in the road and far less % of the problems we did years ago, that I do know!! I'll take my chances and it will be in a Ford or a GM I love living on the edge,,,,,, I really could care less about the grammar or spelling lessons at my age,,, and bunch are bu******, no one said all are!! you probably missed that because of my punctuations?????
-
Baitcasting Reels Not Made In China?
Ya Hootie and a bunch of those are because if you hang your crescent wrench on your key chain it could turn you engine off if you hit a bump while its hanging in the ignition,,,,and many many more reasons that are similar, yes they had a couple real needs for recals, like Toyotas full throttling on their own, and some others, but most are like the ones when Ford caught the heat for using Firestone's on the explorer causing roll overs, and, on and on,,,,,most boil down to trying to make them IDIOT PROOF,,, but some are major engineering screw ups, but most recal's with all makers are simply trying to avoid being sued because someone uses something to an extreme, and wants to blame someone else for there own negligence when it causes problems! Right now with ignition fire hazard that GM ignored they are recalling anything needed or not, they were definitely in neglect

Baitcasting Reels Not Made In China?
A big thank you if he does!! in I have been driving since I was 14 years old, drove about every make car truck and van made and I have owned 2 vehicles built in another country, both were J**K I have owned a couple foriegn brands but they were made here, much better than the other 2!!! But I own a truck and a car one has a few imported parts my truck but was built here, one has a lot of imported parts but was built here,,,,they both are made by GM and I have yet to put a dime in either other than a brake job on both and regular maintenance,,,,,76,000 mi. on the Pontiac, and 103,000 on GMC which I did last week put exhaust on from the cat back, only because the muffler bafle came loose inside and didn't like the rattle at an idle. My last pickup was a 1996 Ford F-350 made here with nearly no import parts, the first motor was replaced at ***410,000 mile*** I sold the truck with over 600,000 miles on it for $14,000.00, which was probably more than I spent in maintenance on it in the 15 years I drove it, This is why most who are willing to spend the money to buy American made also no the bennefits, those that buy foriegn to save a buck, well they will never understand and allways think they are an athourity!! Makke mine made in USA PLEASE!!! and THANK Those that do.

Baitcasting Reels Not Made In China?
Your statement above is wrong, we always made steel in this country, in 1980 and 2014 and every day in between, and at least 1 of the mills I mentioned have been making it since before ww2 in 2004 was sold to Valbruna, an Italian based company, but still manufacturing certified St. Steel, nickle and Titanium alloys for all kinds of use including Aerospace,,,,,,,,regardless has nothing to do with Bass reels,,,,,,I have no idea what certified steels of any alloy are government uses in aerospace or the certified materials you deal with but have to believe it has nothing to do with the metals used in bass reels. As far as our Government goes, they also use Beretta 9mm which are imported or were, and inferior to the over 100 year old 1911A1 which has proven superior in reliability durability, and power,,,,,, back to bass reels,,,,,,,,,,

Best Fish For The Table
Sauger are as good as Walleye, It is sub species of Walleye, a Walleye and Sauger hybrid is a Saugeye and excellent as well, I catch all three species and can tell no difference at the table. to me it is the same meat. I like Yellow Perch Walleye and Bluegill in that order, I have it many different ways from soup to the grill and everything in between, fried, baked, by itself and in casseroles, for saltwater Salmon grilled or smoked.

30Lb Power Pro Snapping Clean Today.
why I use 832, very good abrasion resistance, few braids can take this kind of abuse, and power pro has proven to me to be among the worst.

Baitcasting Reels Not Made In China?
I haven't read most post's here but when I got this far it is obvious there are many making little sense! Boy are you out of touch! I ran machinery crews for Edward Gray Corporation on the Intek Steel Mill in New Carlisle Indiana in the late 80's. I also worked on the SDI steel mill in Indians built new in the 90's. Some of the finest stainless steel on earth is made in Ft. Wayne Ind. at least in the 90's before I fell 42' and could no longer do Iron Work. I have been out of touch a bit since then, but for 40 years I have been building and reconstructing steel mills and foundry's and they have all been hear in the USA! today the 2 mills we built in the 80's and 90's have been running 7 days a week 24 hours a day and most holidays included. Brass in Montpelier Ohio and Aluminum in Auburn Ind. I am sure in the other 48 states we have many more, just not in Pittsburgh. This is like the remark that cars, machines and electronics are better from overseas,,,,,,,,sorry, you just can't buy anything in this country for the prices you can from cheaper lower quality items you can from other country's. But Americans would rather save 50% and buy it twice than spend the same money once and keep an American working!! Ya there is a lot of things you can longer buy that is made here with American pride, and we are still seeing more stuff go over seas, because 90% of Americans CARE MORE ABOUT COST, THAN QUALITY, IF IT IS MORE EXPENSIVE THEY COULD CARE LESS HOW LONG IT LAST!!! Yes sadly you don't have much choice with fishing reels, as I have serviced reels as part of my services for over 20 years and am quite certain the very best money can buy today come from Japan, China, and Korea, at least Bass fishing reels, I have long used Ambassador reels myself and stuill own 2-5500 and a 7000, but there are certainly much higher quality reels made today, smoother stronger, quieter, faster, and more powerful. We all have preferences but with what you are saying you are missing out on some of the best at the minimum. The sad thing is if they were made in the USA we see the same thing we do with rods, we have USA made blanks built by an American owned company and built by American labor, but we have many willing to pay nearly as much for rods that American companies import 100% labor and all, giving up quality for cost,,,etc etc etc, now like we already warned I should have never mentioned the obvious here.
