  1. The TP is a great real for all round use, it will work for lighter lures and still do a good job with heavier lures, although the larger frame Lew's reels do abetter job with heavier lures they are not very good with very light lures in finesse applications. You made a good choice for an all round reel. I would rigg it with 30lbs. Sufix for all round use, and would never go lighter than 20lbs. test. Sufix is my preference so whatever braid you choose the 30 lbs test would be my choice. Now go get those pig's!
  2. We both work together, any customer I have that has need for rod repairs he does, I don't make a thing the charges are all given directly to him. We are friends and I can't give names or prices but I am deeply discounted to the degree every thing he does for me I am charged so little for the labor I end up giving nearly as much in tip's!! I don't need to be guided in what I want. I pick my own component's and design what and how I want it done, I also buy from most suppliers he does in my business, I get the same discounts as he does, I just don't get passed on the charges for taking up his time doing the same thing I can do.
  3. I would not only look at the Lew's Super Duty but the Lew's BB2Z is probably more suited, the Shimano Curado 300E is great but is quite a bit larger. Those would be the reels I would choose from. On the right rod any of these would be great choices.
  4. Ah how sweet to be 14 and to be able to enjoy life with such ease, I look back today and realize how much larger the PLANTET is today,,, the good thing is you will have many more settups in time to bring you the same joy!! Congrats on your new #1 settup now go nail some big ole bass!!
  5. I had it happen with spinning gear and casting gear with Power Pro and Fierleine braid!! and not just on a backlash, I for years never had this happen with the regular fireline fusion, I went to Sufix 832 and have not had it happen in over a year. the other two lines I mentioned cut themselves very easily and were not near as abrasion resistant,,,, like I said never had a problem with the old fireline fusion since its introduction for probably 15 years or so of use, went to power pro, and it was sometimes like what the heck happened with fireline braid and power pro, but for some reason the problem went away as fast as it appeared when I went to Sufix 832???? Spinning or casting I throw hard a lot,,,,,,without backlash, and now without any issues.
  6. WOWE WOWE back to earth there aavery2, get out of the clouds,,, you are talking about a over $650.00 reel not a $179.00 reel, but it does not matter, if the Super Duty used the same braking system the the Z2020 used, it would not increase braking performance, unless maybee if you were trying to run 15 or 20# braid, which would make no sense on this reel, but if it did the Super Duty would be compared to the Calais DC or Calcutta DC,,,,, for the price of the Z2020 it should have the same braking performance as those reals. again APPLES TO APPLES! and why I say the diawas is more advanced,,,,,,,,again! But thanks for professional comment,,,,,
  7. If I didn't own both and had only had "one" I would probably think the same thing. Then when your reasoning is good quality is enough, I agree you have no reason to want the highest quality, but trust me apples to apples the Avid and GLX are very very close performance wise, that being weight of blank, components used, sensitivity, from the same powers and action compared side by side. like I said apples to apples.
  8. I said the Diawa's was much more advanced, I am not a professional, but the Lew's cast thoughtlessly without a hitch and the distance is legendary???? The Diawas may work better with lures under 5/16 oz. but the super duty would never gain from it because of the size the spool and the reel is not designed for finesse casting, this is where the Diawa system's advanced Magnetic System shows its strength. Like I said for what the mag brakes do on the Lew's SD there is no need for anything else. I did not say My Team Gold does not need the Centrifugal brakes and the mag will do anything the Diawa will. That would be "clouded"!! But to think the dual braking system of the Team Gold or TP for that mater doesn't control spool breaking as good as the Diawa system, well that would be clouded!! They both make the reels cast effortlessly. One thing I do know is from many can say other brands are as smooth, cast as far, and as effortlessly, but the Lew's reel's on average do as well as any other reel on the market,,,,and many better. That is not clouded.
  9. St Croix makes the Avid which I compare to the GLX, both lifetime the GLX runs over $325.00 Street price the avid can be had in the same power action and length for around $160.00 new. The GL1 nad GL2 are not the rods the Avid I own are, and cost more. The NRX is what you have to go to to compare apples to apples if you want to use the Legend Extreme or Elite for your high end example. Those two models are as light and as sensitive with I believe better tapers than the NRX. and street price for the Elite is more like $310.00 to $360.00 depending on the model, the Extreme street prices are around $340.00 to $390.00 depending on model. You won't find an NRX for less than $450.00 to $550.00 depending on the model. I agree with Tywithay,,,,,you pay extra for just the name.
  10. Is this something that just started? If so have they been serviced lately? If they have did you change something from previous servicing? If not maybe they need serviced? Or is this just something that you have noticed new out of the box. I personally like centrifugal,.if I only could have one. They are more aggressive at the beginning of the cast when overrun's are most likely. This is where most, with less than highly trained thumbs, run into there biggest problems. I prefer the 4 brake automatic spring assisted system of the Lew's I prefer over the the manual that Shimano uses, and I have never used more than 2 of the 6 brakes available on the Shimano. The BB1 from Lew's has 2 manual and 4 spring assisted brakes, my BB1 uses 1 assisted once in a while with bulky light lures in the wind I will use 2, and both manual have never been used, after trying them once, they were way more aggressive than I like. What I like about assisted brakes are, they are aggressive at the beginning of the cast like all centrifugal brakes are, but they are lighter mid and late cast. But Like I said, the Super Duty uses Mag braking and for pitching flipping and casting bigger lures it is a dream. I feel it is as good as Diawas at doing what it is intended to do. But I have to say the Diawa system is more advanced. Some have said they like mag better for flipping and pitching, it is something I never thought about till it was mentioned, but I agree after thinking about it, the few Magnetic brake reels I have owned were mostly easier to use for pitching and flipping, but still did a descent job at controlling casting!!! They all make great systems today and even lesser reels from the major manufacturers are quite well equipped with useable braking systems today. I like everyone else have my preferences!!
  11. Oh so far from the truth!!! You sir have never owned a Lew's TP or Team Gold, I own a Super Duty and it is Mag only absolutely the easiest to cast reel with a large spoll that I have ever used!! The BB1 Centrifugal only I believe this reel will outcast any other reel out of the box that uses centrifugal only absolutely would have to try and backlash it. and the team Gold and TP for that matter use both, and will put the team Gold up there with any reel at any price!! You want perfection, try a highly Super Tuned Team Gold,,,,,, and forget the Ceramics, who needs em!! and yes sir I have owned most others, and have been runnung my own reel shop for 20+ years, tuned many and to say nobody can use both and make them work is well,,,,,,,,obvious you haven't owned em all!!!
  12. I have owned every one but the new BB1 inshore. In my opinion the Team Gold is there best reel, and contrary to those who haven't owned them and think all reals made in the same plant are the same,,,,,,,,,ya right!!! The Lews reels all offer something different for every tactic you can imagine. The Super Duty and BB1 are best at throwing heavier lures and with heavier line than the smaller frame reels. The MG is great for those who don't like centrifugal braking and want Mag braking and will be throwing 3/8 and heavier lures. The Tournament with dual braking is great with lighter and heavier lures. The TP offers most of the benefits of the Team Gold but uses a graphite side plate and does not have the titanium finish. The Team Pro uses a lighter gear alloy and shorter carbon handle, and with its lighter reel weight is slightly better for a lightweight finesse outfit. But I like the Gold as it is a premium all round performer, lures under 1/4 oz, over 1 oz, they all cast great and only gives up a little to the BB1 with the heavier lures, but does it much smoother with a much longer lasting durable finish. Yes every one of their reels does something different better, but all do most everything very well. The Laser and SS1H with the lack of Aluminum frame and drag system perform well but will probably not take the wear and tear the other reels will. I can assure you the Lew's reels will outperform most any other reel that shares their appearance and some of their parts!!
  13. The Premier is a very good rod, and in my opinion trumps any other rod close to it's price range. It is 100% built in Park Falls Wisconsin, by people who have been doing it for more years than any other rod manufacturer in the USA. Try one but remember,,, the Made in Mexico rods are made by people that are all new to rod building,,,,,to me that makes an obvious difference!! I own 23 St. Croix rods and every one was built in the same plant,,,,,,,,,,,,,yep USA!
  14. I would not say they are not worth getting. But for $150.00 I don't think there is any reel made as good for that price, and you can find them for $150.00 I think there track record from anyone who has owned them reflect that quite clearly. They worth way more than there retail price and offer more extras than reels costing twice the money, you won't go wrong with the Lew's.
  15. I have a 6'3"MFX Legend Elite and use it for up to 3/8 oz. jigs and rigging for Walleye and have landed 10lbs + eyes on it with no problem. I am building a 6'6" MLF Legend Elite for the same type of fishing, I expect the same results, it will be much more fun and I think will have no problem in 30' of water and less. I only use a 1000 Sustain on these settups, with the line capacity you have you will be able to tire any Walleye regardless of size, have a great trip sounds like your ready!!
  16. Wow what a hassle working with USPS!! I ordered the recoil guides I wanted on the 19th of May paid for 2 day priority mail, got a tracking # the 20th and it said they were received in Mass. The left at 4:03 am the 21st, and the expected delivery date is 5-22-2014 OK!! Woopes not OK,,,,,seems with the holiday weekend stuff must have been delayed,,,,,,,,, So I look Tuesday morning the 28th I think or something like that, and USPS tracking still says the same thing, the last they were seen was the 21st at 4:03 am???? So I called,,(not a good thing to do if you already have high blood pressure!!!! I explained the situation to the rep. who then asked if I had the tracking # and she would help me,,, ya,,,right! After what seemed an eternity she let me know my package was received on the 20th and was reported to have left the facility at 4:03 am on the 21st,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ya I know I told her, my question is why did I pay for 2 day priority and 7 days later no one has seen it for 6 days. So she let me know there is no guarantee of being delivered in two days but usually it will be in 2 or 3, I ship all the time and know this, but what came next was enough to blow your stack. She said in 21 days I could make a missing package report and if not found in 60 days it was insured and I could at that time file for my money back for the insured price. I let her know that didn't help me as I need the package to start a project on a time schedule and since the package is lost I need to do that now and get another order on it's way. She apologized and informed me it was not lost yet until there is no update in there system for more than 20 day's our GOVERNMENT run Postal service does not consider it LOST???? Imagine That!!!! who would "a" thunk it!! Lucky for me the folks at Rec. took care of me, they said if they ever find it and it comes please send it back. They put another order together and sent it UPS for no other charges and I had it 3 days later on Friday morning. I got everything to my builder Monday and the build is now under way, only because we cut our United States Post Office ouy of the picture. I am pretty sure after talking with K....... we will get this build together between 2.5 and 3oz. complete, and the main thing,,,,in time for my trip north the first week of July. we will see, if the post office ends up loosing the package or not in another week,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,only the Government would have to waite 3 weeks to understand something is lost!!!
  17. It is all preference there are those who like the Mag braking better and those who like Centrifugal braking better, I prefer both types of breaking used to compliment the other. Both are good reels but for anyone who does not have baitcasting reels down without casting problems I would recamend the centrifugal brakes, they are more aggressive and control the beginning of the cast better, and this is where most hair pulling over runs happen,,,,,,, or buy a reel that supplies both and is known for sssmmmoooooottthhhh casting and cranking,,,,,,,
  18. I would go with the Lew's SS1h right now it's $89.00 with a $20.00 mail in rebate and there is no reel close for the money. For a rod well I would really go for a MF 7' or 6'6" if you like shorter rods in a St Croix Premier. The problem is that would run you about $110.00 to $115.00 if shop around, but well worth the money. This would give you an excellent settup. But for top notch I think your budget only allows for a reel as I think the best start at $150.00. But if I was going to stick close to your budget I would get these and spen the 115 on the Premier as I feel the rod is the most important in a setup.
  19. best for $150.00 to me would be the Tournament Pro from Lew's, you may decide you don't want the rest???
  20. For the price and the rebate,,,,best you can find near the price!!! You will like it.
  21. This is spot on advice. The TET is technology of the Extreme that's not shared with the Elite to me is a non issue,, and to say it is a step up is not really a factor in the feel or noticeable in the performance, as it is very marginal. Like Tywithay stated both Elite and Extreme are noticeably better than the LTB, and the handle and reel seat is the biggest difference between the Elite Extreme, with no forward cork on the Extreme. For me I don't care for the split cork handles, but absolutely hate the skeleton reel seat and no forward cork. I always prefer the elite over the Extremes since they did away with the one piece reel seat, and the two I have were sent to my rod builder for custom full cork handles. I just dropped off a package for him to build this years rod, it included a 6'6" Elite MLF blank, I don't feel I am giving up anything in performance by not choosing the Extreme blank, and would have used the same components on either. I own a 6'8" LTB MXF a Legend Extreme MXF, and a legend Elite 6'3" MXF, all three are great rods, but the Extreme and Elite are noticeably lighter and more sensitive, along with being faster rods. Yes a definite step up, but like was said I would feel the split handle on the extreme if split grips are your cup of tea before upgrading to one!!
  22. Oh I get it same as Kurt "Bushing" I mean bashing,,,,, IAY you will find it is hard to get away with here, far to many have been there done that, and once called on it, your better off to let it die than try and justify it.
  23. X all what everyone said, that will build whatever you want,,,,,I would only spend that kind of money on everything my way!!! The only way to do that is talk a professional builder, I am building one now and when done there wont be a factory rod made to compare to it,,,,,and I won't have over 400 bucks in it!!!
  24. Shimano Sahara, or Symetre Are awful hard to beat for near the same money,,,,the Symetre has long been called the poor mans Stradic, a very nice reel for the price,,,,,
