  1. All i can say is go for it. I am going after my Masters right now beause the time is never right and you just gotta do it. I started my classes last August with a full-time job, a fiance and a soon to be 4 year old. You kind of get into a groove of school, work, family time...rinse and repeat. Now my quesiton is what would you do with a philiosophy degree? Also, a philosophy doctorate is not the easiest one to get as not many schools offer the program and I have heard some horror stories when you go to defend your discertation too since everyting is hteory really and not grounded in fact or actual experience. The only real option would be to teach at the college level which would be a sweet gig if you can get it, especially once you get tenure which is getting harder and harder to come by. Have you thought about an electrical engineering degree? I know my buddy is one and he loves his job and he is working for the government right now....cake walk there and great benefits. I always wanted to work with my dad in his business as an electrical contractor and he siad not a chance....if you want to do electrical then be an electrical engineer and make the big bucks and deal with the same things he does just in a different setting. I'll tell you the same thing i told my younger brother who was going after (and subsequently dropped out) his philosophy degree....the only thing a philosophy degree is good for is allowing you to sit around and ponder why you don't have a job In all seriousness though, go for it and don't look back. Sure it is expensive but it's only money and money isn't what makes anyone happy but finding what you want to be when you grow up and going for it definitely has its perks. Above all else good luck my man and i'll say it again...go for it!!!
  2. Yup...what they all said. The lightest you can get away with seems to be the ticket for me as well with the majority of the time I am grabbing a 1/4 oz.
  3. Do it while you still can is all i can say...but i will get into more details....on your thread, tomorrow
  4. Not really semantics, more geography but i don't want to nit pick And for the record i am going to teach elementary school so that should tell you something........
  5. Never lost a lure on braid when using palomar due to knot failure. Make sure it is moistened well and seated nicely and you shouldn't have any issues. I also use PP super slick and haven't had any issues. I know some people who use the double palomar as well but it seems like overkill to me since i will straighten hooks before the knot fails on the regular version.
  6. I use my 6'8" M XF spinning rod with 6lb diameter braid and have no issues. I tried throwing them on a buddy's lightweight bait caster combo and it just didn't feel right to me but that may be because i am used to the spinning rod & reel for that type of work. With the braid strength and M powered rod, you will have no issues horsing out any bass as needed based on the cover.
  7. Maybe or it might just be that being geographically challenged is the culprit too since Oklahoma really isn't much further south than VA.... I would also guess that if you routinely exchanged home brews that you would be returning the same bottles that you were given but the same person. My big thing too is i don't have a place to store all of them anyways so i figure i might as well give them back.
  8. It is a little different when you are given a home brew item. You are being given the elixir inside, not the bottle. I always return the bottles if i receive such a gift but I also know that is the deal because i had a buddy who used to brew some beer. I would guess it is more of a lack of understanding of what is involved and the difficulty/expense of obtaining the bottles and that they can be reused. I do the same thing if i am given a mason jar of vegetables or sauce or apple sauce or whatever.
  9. People are quick to blame the big bad federal government when in reality the common core is not a federal program and a school's curriculum is created at the school, district or state level. So while the animosity may have doe basis, the angst is being directed towards the wrong people. it is a tough one too because how do you know if a school/student is successful without testing but that is what everyone complains about.
  10. Thanks everyone for the comments. I honestly believe the intent is good and every teacher I have worked with has been great and concerned more about the kids than anything and I plan to be the same way. One quick side note. There is nothing wrong with common core standards. What people are missing and don't understand is that common core are just standards and not curriculum or lessons and they only cover language arts and math. Common core is also not a federal government program but it is an effort driven by educators from many states. Much of the things I see written and talked about is so wrong and the blame is being placed in the wrong place. Common core is a standard and how that standard that is met is up to the school or state as to how they want to do it. I happen to be in a state that hasn't adopted the common core standards we just have the crappy SOL system instead which is worse in my opinion.
  11. not in my class......
  12. nothing too exciting but my current class is my 5th one and it is a 4 credit masters level class involving teaching reading. I know i tend to be old school in a lot of my thoughts and methods but I have to say, the excuses and accommodations that are standard for the course just don't fly with me. Yes I understand that students are different and all students learn differently but accommodating to every student defeats the purpose of education. I suck at multiple choice tests, they are boring and i don't feel they accurately test a student's knowledge but i am pretty good with essay and short answer tests. There are many schools that provide different tests to the same group of students based on their testing strengths. This to me is dumb. If you aren't good at something you work at it and get better, not just test on your strengths. It will be my job as a teacher to use all the different testing methods and even if a student isn't as good at one style or another, I am responsible for balancing out the different assessment types to ensure in the end, the student has learned what they were supposed to learn and made their weaknesses a little stronger. It is ok to do poorly.... I have a feeling that this is going to be my biggest struggle when i get a class of my own but hopefully i can move up the food chain a little and help to shape a school or district in a way that is beneficial to students, parents and teachers alike.... Ok...rant over
  13. Yeah if they are rolling around like that you witnessed the actual spawning act. Pretty cool stuff, i have seen it in brookies but never bass. Look for the nearest drop off and try and get the ones that haven't spawned yet or you can wait till they are protecting the bed if you are into bed fishing.
  14. Figure out if someone around at a local shop can help you out and get you a receipt from when it was purchased, AKA make you a new one. I know when i had my road bike stolen i needed the receipt for the renters insurance claim but i didn't have it. I talked to the bike shop and they gave me receipt but it was where i originally bought it from, they just changed the date for me on a current receipt. Normally i wouldn't say to go that route but at the same time there is no other way to get it done. Maybe see if a buddy in a neighboring state can register it without the same hassle then you can have it transferred to you....just brainstorming here
  15. you can always build up a mopar V8 and then swap it out into my jeep along with Dana 60's front and rear...or i could settle for a diesel swap too
  16. doubt they were spawning as has been mentioned already. And just because the water is cold, the bass still need to eat. Some of my biggest bass were caught in cold water in the high 30s to low 40s.
  17. As long as it is tight you will be ok of a while. Once you start fishing though there is a good chance it will loosen up over time and dig in like was mentioned. I find the 8lb diameter to be the sweet spot for me on my PQ in the same ratio as yours.
  18. Weak...I had to move the biggest uhaul you can get without a cdl in one day loafing and unloading and driving 2 hours to unload then 2 hours back to drop off the truck....I did have one other person helping though as my now ex-wife was about as helpful as......
  19. My dogs keep the rabbits and cats away, i am more worried about the stupid birds but i have a feeder that will hopefully keep them occupied. While watering yesterday I noticed the arugala is already sprouting. I imagine the spinach will be soon to follow.....thought it was weeds at first but it was to nicely distributed and shaped different to be weeds. I never thought i would be into gardening but it is kind of fun. It also really hasn't been that much work all things considered. A little effort in the beginning but even that will be less ned year since the beds are all made now. I am really looking forward to having some fresh tomatoes to make enough sauce to last me till next year's garden
  20. I target them whenever I can...underrated sport fish and the most fun on a fly rod I have ever had.
  21. I have done all mine from seed and outside....a lot of the stuff i read said to start them inside and then harden them off and plant in your garden. If i had room inside i might do that but no dice for me. I am just waitign to see those first little sprouts pop through the ground.
  22. money minnows and stankxbaitco swimz are my favorites
  23. No way on the retiring it. Get anew handle and use that thing....your dad obviously did and would probably want to see you keep using it like he did.
  24. I started throwing cranks on the standard MHF rods and was really enjoying the tecnique. I figured i woudl jump in and see if a lower ear ratio reel and a cranking specific stick would make a difference. I picked up a BPS PQ in 4.7:1 and a kistler helium cranking rod used and it made a big difference. I am fishing the same way i was before and catching more fish. I am convinced the rod is giving me more feedback on the crank and i am realizing more bites.....
