Fishing Neighborhood Ponds?
Wow old thread revival...most counties have a GIS mapping website and you can see who owns any property which then will say who you need to ask for permission. Just because it isn't posted doesn't mean it is fair game and to say that is disrespectful to the landowners. Sad that people think just because it isn't posted means you can go on the property. I mean I don't have no trespassing on my yard so I guess that means anyone can go in my front and back yard because it isn't posted.

Older tackleboxes (80s-90s) seem better than the new ones? Anyone agree?
I''l take modern boxes all day every day. Old omnes lack adjustability and are heavier. I have a plethora of choices now and there are enough choices to not have to settle on what I want for a pecific purposes. right now i have a lot of plano 3600 in regular and waterproof versions to take in my kayak

Wading a small creek. What can I tow behind on rope to keep a few?
backpack cooler is your best bet. Tying anything to you is only gonna be good when going upstream, going downstream it will be in the way.

What are you tossing in a pond "too small to hold fish?"
i'd hit it at dawn or dusk with some walk the dog topwaters as the come out from hiding looking to feed.

Outfitting a NuCanoe Unlimited
I have mine angled backwards and pretty much parallel to the boat so they are out of the way. if I could fit them inside I might do that but this way has worked for me. I do like the open deck of that nucanoe though. I think my nbext kayak will be a not be a kayak though and will be a paddle board.

Outfitting a NuCanoe Unlimited
With tracks you can use the yak attack omega rod holders and the ones with the extensions. I don't carry 4 usually but I was looking into adding 4 holders just in case. They are the best I have found to hold fly rods with the most adjustability.

Most of the river smallmouth I catch in/around current are average-small in size. All of the trophy sized fish have been in calm deep pools off rock piles. Am I doing something wrong or does this sound right?
same here. Once i figure out where they are holding on a particular day, it does seem to hold for that day but next trip out is always a learning experience. I am very methodical early on in a trip and then i can pretty much count on the pattern to hold for a while that day.

Lunker in a Kayak?
Big fish are easier to handle in a kayak than small ones. I hate nets so I never use one. I have everything I need within reach so I can lip the fish. unhook and weigh or measure length if needed in about a minute or so. It takes practice but it isn't that hard, especially with the more modern kayaks. When I first started kayak fishing there was no such thing a fishing kayak and i know many people who were reaching over the side to get a fish and ended up falking out or tipping their kayak. My last couple kayaks that wouldn't be an issue at all.

Are we of a single mind?...
No leaders for me. No need for another failure point in the system. Straight braid, copolymer or mono for me. Even on my fly rod i use straight leaders as well

Plastic boats
I am hoiping to get a plastic boat at some point and I am looking hard at the Hog Island Boatworks skiff. I want a Jet motor so I can run the rivers around here and not havbe to worry about beating up the bottom like you would in an aluminum one.

Something dawned on me today.
I didn't say you HAD to only have one rod I don't even know how many I have now but I am guessing over a dozen of varying weights, sinking lines etc. Picked up a glass 3wt well, just because and to use on smaller streams for brookeis and panfish. So far that rod is a blast to fish.

Something dawned on me today.
Just get into fly fishing and you can have one rod do everything you need and do it well, at least for bass anyways. it is nice though to have 3 or 4 of them though ready to go with different presentations.

300lb Alligator Gar!
I'd bet it is easier to catch a DD bass than it is a 300lb alligator gar. There are hundreds of DD bass caught each year and very few 300lb class alligator gar caught.

Fly tying....getting back into it.
I have tied some of the zonker strip style before and they produce as well. I know I used to glue a piece of mono to the back of the zonker strip which would allow it to stand more upright and they produced. As far as teh weight of these goes, the hand test, aka feeling them myself, they don't seem any heavier than a clouser but I will weigh them just to satisfy my curiosity. I have no doubt you could cast these on a spinning rod but I don't always carry conventional gear when fly fishing.

What are you doing differently this summer?

Sandy River Reservoir report
I haven't fished there in a few years but I am hoping to add it to my night time fishing locations even though it is a bit of a drive for me.

Fly tying....getting back into it.
yes, lots of weight. Here is the link to the craw I emulated. The differences I did were to not include the mono eyes and I also think he does a double wrap of lead, I did a single and I used a Gamakatsu 4/ b10s hook that I bent the eye up like he does. As far as the leg material, I used fly specific stuff but you can use whatever you wanted to really. He calls for 24 total legs and the tabs are made with 12 strands so it is easy to grab a tab, cut off one side tie it in, hollow style, cut the other tab off and repeat for the bottom. The design is to provide that jigging action on the retrieve and get down quickly. I haven't fished them yet but on conventional gear, black and blue/purple is a go to and always produces, except when it doesn't then I like the more subdued colors of green and orange etc... I need to order some more of the bodies though. I want to make some smaller ones to go along with these larger 3.5" ones. It is a really easy tie and after the first one, i think each fly took me 10 minutes max to tie. The legs can be kind of unruly but you know how that goes. I kind of wonder if i could buy a premade jig skirt and use that but the way these are tied, it isn't that hard. I want to tie some up with more green and blue to match the craws I see in the susky.

Richmond Virginia, Kayak Fishing Spots and General Advice
Having kayak fished in the richmond area for almost 2 decades now I can tell you that the main reason I got a kayak when I moved here was because there are so many areas to access that are HP restricted or electric only. Really you are only limited by your time and the species you are targeting. We have the James and the plethora of ramps that allow access to the entire river and it isn't too bad to paddle up and float back when the river is normal to slightly higher than normal. or you can get a motor like I did last year which helps cut the effort and time to river fish exponentially. There are then smaller flows that are easy to access and paddle. Lakes, take your pick of what you want. We have it all within a couple hour drive. One of my personal favorites is Diascund reservoir. Look at the VA DWR sire and have at it....

Craw Style Baits Not Producing?
Craw baits, assuming jigs count, are always tied on for me year round. Just tied up some for the fly rod today actually.

Any Kastking fans out there?
i bought one baitcaster, speed demon or something. It was heavy, got grindy really quickly and i put it in the take apart and clean bin and it is still there. I do like their braid though.
